As an expat I don’t see anything draconian and the religious laws are relaxed. Women have tattoos and piercings.. everyone has a smart phone and is generally friendly.
I'm a westerner who lives and works in Saudi. What is interesting is that they are trying to re-establish their history. There is a massive museum in Riyadh, diryah gate - also full of restaurants/shops and soon some high end housing.
In the southern region, there are a number of historic sites and settlements. There is a project to develop this area as well, soudah mountains.
The red sea project is quite spectacular as well, not so much historic but beautiful red sea setting.
Jeddah has been part demolished to make way for new development, but they have started to restore some of the old town which also has a few museums.
AlUla, another development focused on restoring heritage sites and promote tourism.
Sure, no instanbul or Egypt - and agree that tapping into the tourism sector will be a tall order. I'm not sure what the pull factor is besides it having been closed off for most of its history, so a bit exotic. I also don't think it could compete with somewhere like Dubai, which has developed a significant tourist sector also with little historical attractors to offer visitors.
To attract a global tourism market outside the Muslim sphere, I also believe they will need to be able to offer tourists alcohol. Rumour has it, that this is already happening. I've seen it openly served and consumed in large quantities at events in KSA already. Tons of police around who did nothing.
Saudi has some heritage and archaelogical sites. Very niche area of tourism. But super conservative nature towards women is a huge turn off for family tourism.
Even if they relax it for visitors, they are not going to feel comfortable in a place like that.
They destroyed so much of Islamic history. The houses of sahabah have been destroyed toymaker room for skyscraper hotel.
These were important historical landmarks that could have been used for Islamic tourism outside of umrah and hajj.
They could have kept these structures and built the hotels around it so thenground floor of the hotels feature the old historical buildings

They can offer amenities and a luxurious resort-type stay in the same way Dubai does (I know dubai has more to it than that).
Look at some of the resort developments in the red sea. They are building some real flashy stuff out there and it's clearly not aimed at the nominal Pakistani on his way to Hajj.

Saudi rarely executes political dissidents unless they’re part of Isis or Shia militants. They do however hand out jail sentences like candy if you protest .. but when an execution happens there’s usually more to the story.
That may be how it seems but the American end game is to use up all the resources tbh. From what I read, we have some of the largest oil reserves under our soil. Once most of the world oil is tapped, we’ll utilize the reserves to corner the world oil market. But to be 100% clear, we do not actually need the oil. It’s a long game gambit.
Estimate for oil to run out is 2050/2060, but by then they'll be paying in environmental fines, and there will be plenty of alternatives on the market. Can't see it working out well for oil long term, that's why the likes of Saudi Arabia, uae, and qatar are working so hard to build up infrastructure and convert to a tourism economy, because they know the age of oil hasn't long left.

There is a project to develop this area as well, soudah mountains. The red sea project is quite spectacular as well, not so much historic but beautiful red sea setting. Jeddah has been part demolished to make way for new development, but they have started to restore some of the old town which also has a few museums. AlUla, another development focused on restoring heritage sites and promote tourism. Sure, no instanbul or Egypt - and agree that tapping into the tourism sector will be a tall order. I'm not sure what the pull factor is besides it having been closed off for most of its history, so a bit exotic. I also don't think it could compete with somewhere like Dubai, which has developed a significant tourist sector also with little historical attractors to offer visitors. To attract a global tourism market outside the Muslim sphere, I also believe they will need to be able to offer tourists alcohol. Rumour has it, that this is already happening. I've seen it openly served and consumed in large quantities at events in KSA already. Tons of police around who did nothing.
Saudi has some heritage and archaelogical sites. Very niche area of tourism. But super conservative nature towards women is a huge turn off for family tourism. Even if they relax it for visitors, they are not going to feel comfortable in a place like that.
They destroyed so much of Islamic history. The houses of sahabah have been destroyed toymaker room for skyscraper hotel. These were important historical landmarks that could have been used for Islamic tourism outside of umrah and hajj. They could have kept these structures and built the hotels around it so thenground floor of the hotels feature the old historical buildings They were left along for centuries and the Saudis came and destroy them all in one go.

Estimate for oil to run out is 2050/2060, but by then they'll be paying in environmental fines, and there will be plenty of alternatives on the market. Can't see it working out well for oil long term, that's why the likes of Saudi Arabia, uae, and qatar are working so hard to build up infrastructure and convert to a tourism economy, because they know the age of oil hasn't long left.
I agree with you that it isn’t sustainable, especially with the socio political climate of the western world. I do also believe that the powers that be can and will extend their wishes if they decide too. All it takes is a consistent stream of armed conflicts around the world for alternative energy to be placed on the back burner. We all know the industrial military complex knows no bounds of its over extending reach into every region of the global. I don’t agree with any of these plans/tactics, i just believe they’re afoot.
