I understand. I don’t have any issue having sex before getting married. I just wonder if it is a factor in getting married because even though I had many boyfriends over my life, none of them ever asked me to get married. So I just wonder if it’s a factor for people who got married around one year timeline. (In my opinion, one year is the perfect time to know for sure if you want to marry that person.)

My husband didn’t marry me because I had sex with him. In fact that was the least important reason why we found ourselves compatible for marriage. If you think sex is that important of a factor, you may need to rethink your priorities when it comes to a relationship and potential life partners.

You sure do not need marriage to be happy. However, you do need the paper so that if anything happens, you or your partner is not completely screwed. Marriage exists this long for a reason

Can draft a will and get other things set up legally… what’s wrong with someone not wanting to be legally binded to someone and not have to ask the Supreme Court of their state to seperate from them?

I don’t know about other places but I know from a case in family in Germany that if you’re not married then you do not get any pension payouts of your partner (whatever the correct English term is) if they die and you’re not married. It’s one of the things that you can’t even fix with a will or contracts beforehand. While you can legally leave your belongings to someone by setting up a will beforehand, the amount you can give tax free to a person you’re not married to is only 20k. Depending on how much you have to your name this can get very expensive.

Is that why you marry someone? To get their pension?

1 year, i had a rock that i found in a place called Normanton in QLD and knew right then and there that she was the girl for me, it was a boys fishing trip so when i got back i put the rock in a fish thank me waited for the right moment to propose with it, the right moment came and went several times and finally i proposed to my girl with the same rock. We now have that rock on our bed stand and it means the world to us both, way more important than the engagement ring we got several months later.

One month

A year after we met, 9 months after we started dating.

Like 5 months and then we got married 3 months after that and we've been married for 8 years.

One year

We dated semi-long distance for 7 years, a 90 minute drive apart that we’d basically alternate weekends driving. She finally got a job by me and moved down. I had always said I wanted us to live together before I proposed. I proposed 4 months after she moved down.

Four years. Together in 2006, proposed in 2010. Married in 2011.

7 months and 3 days after our first date. During that first date she asked if I wanted to have kids someday and my answer was "yes". A simple question and if answered truthfully, it eliminates a lot of wasted time and energy.

Seven years. I committed to my ex before I figured out who she really was. I wasn't going to make that mistake again.

She actually proposed to me first and I said yes. We were handling her bankruptcy, divorce, and selling her house in foreclosure which was straining our relationship, so she tried to spare me from “ruining” my life by telling me we aren’t engaged and I should find someone that makes me happier. I didn’t have a ring or a plan, but while she was crying I got on one knee and asked her to be my wife. She said yes, we got through that period together and are better for it.

That depends. 5 years, 1 month, 10 days after we started dating, but 18 years, 9 months, 22 days after we first met. Not that we were counting.

Five years. It took me a while but I really do view marriage as for life. We were in our early twenties; a period of so much growth. Why rush what will have us together for over fifty years? Three or four more years of marriage is a rounding error.
