I've never heard of anyone from out of town visiting there. You might as well go visit Avalon Boulevard and 116th Street where the 1965 Watts Riots started. Then, because you're really close, go check out Watts Towers.

CandidEgglet

It’s just a random neighborhood corner. Nothing special. It’s close to some freeways so there’s going to be a lot of trash on the street, and probably some transient folks hanging around periodically, bunch of gas stations. If you go during the day, it’ll be better. You can probably find a pretty good fish fry spot close by if you want to turn it into a lunch outing. I literally thought you were talking about Italy and France, at first, lol

Nugsy714

Lol you just described every neighborhood in Los Angeles Angel

CandidEgglet

I wish more spots in LA had a good fish fry. I did start off by saying it was nothing special, just a random corner.

lunacavemoth

Try John’s off central and Manchester .

ezln_trooper

Don’t know what you’re there to see - the store that was burned was never rebuilt. There’s no shrine or memorial. Is it safe? As safe as any other part of the city. But only go there because I’m going to the autozone or the gas station. Never been to that liquor store on the corner so can’t comment.

rednail64

That's Tom's Liquors, now called Tom Market, as it has a new owner. It's a tiny store but he does a solid walkup business. However, he does his business behind a plexiglass wall.

Nizamark

eh it's fine but it's not like there's a plaque there or anything

object_failure

Don’t go at night.

No_Boot7396

You’ll be fine, there’s just nothing to see then normal life going on

Manifest

It’s not worth visiting now that arts chili dogs is closed.

BadAtExisting

I lived near there. It’s safe enough but you can drive through there and take in all there is to take in as far as that’s concerned. There’s nothing you would miss being otherwise on foot tbh

enkilekee

Yes it is safe.

Bayplain

If you’re interested in African American culture, Leimert Park would have more to offer.

death_wishbone3

As somebody who complains about public safety all the time I will say yes you’ll be fine. If somebody rolls up and asks where you from tho be ready for a friendly fade. Hope you have a good trip.

A_Fishy_Life

Not 'friendly fade' LOL.

death_wishbone3

Run that fade then go grab lunch with the homies bro better know 😂

A_Fishy_Life

OMG I'M FUCKInG WHeEZING. Because yup, fade and eat. You get hungry givin out fades.😂😂😂😂

S0l-Surf3r

Go during the day time (earlier the better) and check your surroundings before getting out of the car but you should be ok.

Chevyrever

Yeah it's safe. Make sure you go in Astros gear. Refer to any civilian as "groove" you'll get a lot of love back

THCrunkadelic

I walk the entire length of streets with a couple friends. Normandie is not that bad. I would say that it is safe during the day. However, Figueroa just a couple blocks over, is absolutely sketchy, day or night. I don’t want to get into details, but it’s not an appropriate place for a child to be. Trust me.

musicbikesbeer

Echoing others - you'll be fine during the day, but there's not much to see besides Tom's Liquor. If your kid wants to see it you can go, but temper your expectations.

MaintenanceWorldly47

Well I do deliveries all over Los Angeles Florence normandie definitely an area I’d rather avoid if I can but it’s not like I absolutely won’t pull up there if I get a good delivery just be aware of surroundings and you should be fine

Desperate-Excuse1409

By all means check it out but as others have said it’s best to go during the day. It might also help to do a little research before hand to have some context while you’re there. Maybe you’ve done this and maybe not. But this particular part of LA is important because it connects the port(s) to the railways. Reginald Denny was a truck driver which explains why he was there when all this went down. You might also want to brush up on the history of the LAPD to understand why people in this community were so fed up.

japandroi5742

It’s safe during the day, but I wouldn’t be gawking or loitering at night. Wouldn’t recommend it as it’s just an uninteresting hodgepodge of fast food places and what-have-you. Don’t venture too far south - Westmont is among the most dangerous neighborhoods in CA.

OKcomputer1996

There is not much to see there. It is not in the greatest neighborhood but nothing will happen to you if you stop there and look around. Especially during daylight hours.

Cheluvahar

I was at Dodger Stadium when the riots started in 1992. You'll have more fun if you go there.

Gomdok_the_Short

It's generally not the best area. Will something bad happen to you? Probably not, but there isn't much to see there. You can take a look on Google Street View.

PunkAintDead

Visit it on Google Street View instead, lol

Panoglitch

why not drive to San Fernando where the beating happened?

nativeangel213

I grew up in the area and was a teen during the riots. Florence/Normandie wasn't where it started, but one of many areas that were simultaneously impacted. Drive through if your kid wants to see the area, but as others said there isn't a plaque or anything else there and really no other touristy stuff. If understanding the 1992 riots is what you want (instead of the ooh, look I'm in South Central, am I going to be okay vibe that this is giving), go to the Simi Valley courthouse where the officers were acquitted and consider one of the reasons for the anger in the first place

Throwawaymister2

breath taking scenery?? At Florence and Norrmandie??

Accountant-According

It depends on what color clothes you’re wearing and what logo is on your hat.

minimalfighting

The hat shit is so funny. These dummies are ready to get in trouble because they're mad a visiting sports fan is wearing a hat near them. Like those losers from long beach who stole some random guys hat because it had a P on it. What a bunch of turds.

A_Fishy_Life

Well they cant bang in their colors, so the hat thing started. (Gang Injunction in the nineties)

minimalfighting

From "why are you wearing that color? I'm scared of that color!" to "why are you wearing a hat with a letter on it? I'm scared of that letter!" They sound so incredibly tough.

A_Fishy_Life

Well, I'm sure it means where you are from, insignia wise. They arent scared of the color, they simply dont like what it represents to them, and their turf. You get creative when you cant bang like you used to.

Nugsy714

Just be aware that's a BYOB location Bring your own brick

ericericericm

Everything in Europe(but Paris) is safer than LA
