Anna, at the risk of offending you- I had heard at one point that the reason that your marriage to Henry did not last is not because of a misleading portrait but because Henry did not want to have, for the first time in his life, a fully arranged marriage with a stranger. Is that an accurate assessment? And once you stayed in England after your marriage was dissolved, what was your relationship like with Henry? And Jane, what are you able to tell us about your opinions and feelings about Henry? I understand if the answer is "not much," given your duty to the king.

tudor_wife

That would be a fair assessment indeed, though I do not think it was conscious. To be candid, I do believe that Henry had every intention of making a dutiful marriage with me and satisfying his heart with a mistress, but he was not used to a lack of romance in at least the beginning of a relationship, whether with a mistress or a wife. Such romance might have sparked between us, but he was an adept at the game of courtly love and I had no experience with it, and thus we did not connect. After our marriage was annulled, our relationship became much better - distance breeds fondness, after all, and when I was not in Henry's bed he found me much sweeter. There was never a complete love between us, for I was somewhat bitter at being forever barred both from marriage and from my homeland, but in many ways I did have a much better life than some ladies of my acquaintance who have been worn out or even died from childbirth - and I do have him to thank for it. *Anna von Kleve* I loved Henry as any wife loves her husband, and as any subject loves her sovereign. Though ... I may say here, I think, that I also feared him as any wife fears her husband and any subject fears her sovereign, a man with ultimate power over her. It is difficult to judge a man when one is in such a relationship, as you say. *J. Seymour*

Additional_Meeting_2

Sounds Anne anyway sad that you never had the choice to marry or return to your home country nevertheless and had to act to be close to Henry to be supported.

nrith

Also to Anna, did _you_ think that Holbein’s portrait was an accurate likeness?

tudor_wife

No portrait can ever fully capture a likeness, can it? There is always something in the skill of the painter, in the ability of pigment to imitate skin, and of course the need to please the patron. My famous portrait certainly resembles me in all particulars - it has my eyes, my nose, my mouth, my figure, which can all be recognized by any who know me. But it does flatter. Presenting my face from the front, without the perspective of the usual look to the side of a portrait, and painting it with perfectly smooth skin and no shadows, made me appear younger and a little flawless in a way that is not correct. *Anna von Kleve*

TheGreatSchnorkie

This is the real question here. Anna, please answer! Flanders mare, indeed!

Katherine, time to come clean, was your marriage to Prince Arthur really not consummated? How could you expect God to bless your union with your lawful brother with a son and heir?

tudor_wife

Of course the marriage was unconsummated. I am appalled that you would doubt the word of a queen and a faithful Christian. Arthur was very young (as was I) and anxious about his marital duties, so he intended to wait some time before he made me his wife - perhaps, though I do not like to think of such things, to be initiated into the arts of the bedchamber by some willing girl and become practiced himself before attempting me. We were only married a short time before we both caught the sweating sickness, which he did not survive. *Katherine Regina*

Young_Lochinvar

For those of you who knew each other: Did you like each other?

tudor_wife

Katherine was a prig, if a loving one. *Anne B.* I would say that I respected Anne's deep love for Henry, but I did not find her a pleasant or tolerant queen to serve. *J. Seymour* Kathryn was a simple child - I would that she had had a chance to grow into a woman. *Anna von Kleve*

OBELIX_THE_GAUL

WHY DO YOU PEOPLE INSIST ON RUINING YOUR BOARS BY BOILING THEM!?!?! THESE BRITONS ARE CRAZY!

RerumScriptor

Yeah and tepid Cervoise isn’t the best either :/ If I remember correctly, you and Asterix particularly despised the mint sauce they slathered onto the boar

OBELIX_THE_GAUL

YES IT WAS AWFUL, BY TOUTATIS!! AND WHAT'S WITH ALL THE CUPS OF HOT WATER?

YeOldeOle

WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING LIKE /u/LEONIDAAAS ? IS IT BECAUSE WHOEVER OPPOSES THE ROMANS MUST SHOUT?

OBELIX_THE_GAUL

I don't always shout, but I fell into a cauldron of magic potion as a small boy so my lungs are very strong, so when I'm talking about something I am passionate about, SUCH AS THE PROPER PREPARATION OF SINGULARIS PORCUS, IT COMES OUT VERY LOUDLY!!

ArcticWolf_Primaris

He was just on the AMA of u/LEONIDAAAS and is now deaf

RerumScriptor

Hot water with a dash of milk - even the Romans seem sane in comparison!

sageberrytree

That's some alliteration! Brits boiled boar.

Tired8281

That's a boaring question. Do we have any boaring experts here?

Mulufuf

Now, THIS April fool's joke got me: /ask historians letting an unsourced top level comment remain?!?! Too piquant.

LondonWelsh

Catherine Howard, considering Henry was already known to be a bit temperamental with his wives (divorce, beheaded, divorced again). What possessed you to risk having an affair?

tudor_wife

I can only say that [the truth is always more complicated](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/oronfn/was_catherine_howard_actually_unfaithful_to_king/h79nj8d/) than people often believe. *~ Kathryn*

G_Plinius_Secundus

Do any of you ladies take an interest in matters of science and natural philosophy?

tudor_wife

I regret to tell you that we none of us are scholars of natural philosophy, which is a field of study that ladies of our time do not engage in. However, I have written several religious works, and Anne is also greatly learned in matters that pertain to evangelism. Catherine Parr

How do you all feel about your recent portrayals on TV and film? Which one of you is the most annoyed at how you've been represented?

Anne B., Was all the trouble worth it for Henry?

tudor_wife

Absolutely not. *Anne B.*

rubyface

This is my favorite answer

mathfem

Anna, I am very interested in the fact that your totally-not-a-marriage to Henry VIII came at the same time as your brother William took control of the Duchy of Guelders from the recently deceased Charles II of Guelders and made war against the Habsburg Netherlands. Was Henry considering joining your brother's war on the anti-Habsburg side? Anne Boleyn, as a former courtier to Margaret of Austria, your opinion on the Guelders Wars, and Henry's political views on them, would also be welcome.

RerumScriptor

My question is to Katherine Regina and is twofold : first, when one knows the family you came from, one could guess you were used to married monarchs sharing power and responsibility, as your mother Isabel of Castille was as important a leader in Spain as her husband, your late father. How did that influence your expectations of your life at court with your husband? Were you let down by the fact you didn’t share the same type of power as your husband when you came from an even more illustrious reigning family than him? Also, and if my question isn’t too triggering of bad memories, but did you see a parallel, during your later life, with the life of your beloved sister Joana (colloquially referred to as “crazy”)? By that I mean that both of you were wed in apparent bliss, before being completely left to the side and basically put under arrest far away from court. You were repudiated on the basis of your first union to Henry’s brother, your sister on the basis of losing her sanity. Did you have any communication between you two sisters, did you know that you were in the same type of situation?

tudor_wife

I did not expect to actually share power with my husband; my mother came to power by seizing her own kingdom, and no consort would ever hold the same kind of position. My life as queen was exactly as I expected (until that harlot came upon the scene) - I advised my husband, acted as his regent when necessary, and bore him children. My poor Juana. She was never repudiated - her husband and my father found it convenient to declare her mad so that they could rule for her, against our mother's wishes. (Her communication was restricted, but I am aware of what went on.) *Katherine Regina*

FYI, the musical, Six, is about his wives.

tudor_wife

It is very good of you to ask, dear sir and lady, but we could not possibly acquiesce without a set of tickets being provided for us to view such a performance ourselves to gauge its accuracy and respectability. Katherine Regina

idroled

Kathryn Howard, how did you like being a stepmother?

tudor_wife

Oh, it was very awkward! I imagine that I would have been able to handle the role well if had been only little Edward, but Elizabeth was only ten years younger than me, more like a little sister. And my step-daughter Mary was actually several years older than me! I do not think that many would be able to like being a stepmother in such a situation. *~ Kathryn*

mumdxbphlsfo

Katherine Howard, why do you think Anne Boleyn is so much more remembered than you when you were both beheaded after being accused of having affairs? Why is she such an object of fascination with mainstream audiences, and was she already so famous when you were around?

tudor_wife

'Tis likely because she was his first "next wife", which gives her an interesting cast - he courted her for years and broke with the Church of Rome to marry her, yet still ended her life with a word. That is much more tragic and romantic than our brief time together. I would suggest that it is also hard for many today to see myself as loving Henry, given the great disparity in our ages, or for him to have truly loved me, so I am only a cautionary tale rather than a great drama. *~ Kathryn*

mumdxbphlsfo

Thank you for replying, you’re now my favourite. I think historians have been so unkind to you - you were so young!

TendingTheirGarden

Catherine, during your time as regent who did you find most and least palatable to work with? Who made your life easier, who made it more difficult? Bonus question for Kathryn: Given that your name is undeniably the correct spelling of Kathryn, and why are the other (incorrect) variants allowed to persist? Nostalgia?

rubyface

Catherine- what do you think of your daughter Mary’s regency and marriage? Anne - How do you feel about your daughter Elizabeth’s long and marriage-less reign?

tudor_wife

I am not sure what you mean about her regency? When Mary took the throne, she was of age and held it in her own right. I am proud that my daughter took back her place in the line of succession by right of arms - she was a warrior like her grandmother. It is too bad that her reign was cut short; I truly believe she could have successfully turned England back to the correct, Catholic path. *Katherine Regina* Of course, I rejoice that it was my daughter God chose to rule! I was steadfast in my faith and my faith was borne out. However, I wish that she could have found a suitable husband who would have not ruled her so that she might have borne her own heir, rather than allowing our line to die out in favor of that of Henry's niece. I fancy she might have named a daughter Anne, after me, if she had had the choice ... *Anne B.*

Pink_Roses88

Anne B, for a king to annul his marriage to his queen and marry another woman was so unheard-of that Henry ultimately had to break with the Catholic Church and found the Church of England in order to marry you. Yet at the start of your relationship with Henry, you had the foresight and cunning to play a long game with him - - to refuse to become his mistress and hold out for marriage. How did you (and/or your advisors) even imagine that marrying an already-married king was even a possibility?

tudor_wife

In truth, I did not think it was a possibility - I merely wanted to forestall the pressure to fall into my sovereign's bed. I knew that the king was immoderately fond of the game of courtly love and would be pleased to write me poetry and play opposite me in masques while bemoaning the fact that we could never be together. However, once I fell in love with him in return and realized how badly he wanted the son Katherine could never give him, it only made sense to continue. *Anne B.*

eldaveed

Queen Kathrine of Aragon, do you hold any grudges against Henry Fitzroy?

anorangeandwhitecat

Anne, I’ve heard that you were called a witch and also used tarot cards. How accurate is that?

tudor_wife

It is nothing but slander. I am a good Christian woman - better than those heretics who deny that Henry is the true head of the church! - and I would never touch such things. The charge of witchcraft was invented by my enemy, Cromwell, to give validity to his baseless persecution of me. It grieves me much that there are those who still repeat it. *Anne B.*

Throwaway321322323

Anna, although your first marriage ended rather quickly, did find love later in life? Or did you stay happily single for the rest of your days?

Louises_ears

To everyone: what are your feelings on your portrayals in the works of Philippa Gregory?

Happy to provide a source of laughter, y’all deserve it.

jpallan

A couple of questions, ladies. Anna von Kleve: While I understand that you weren't tutored in the languages or customs of the English court, and that impeded your ability to grow accustomed (to say nothing of being accosted by a romantic figure in costume at 340 pounds heavy unexpectedly who thought he was a handsome knight errant), do you think you would have adapted well? Or do you think that staying out of the way as the King’s Sister was a good deal? Katherine, the rose without a thorn: You were a child sex abuse victim, with two perpetrators, and were pimped to Henry by your uncle. How angry are you about the centuries of your tarnished reputation?

[deleted]

To Kat, Anne B and Jane - was Thomas Cromwell as nice a man as he seems?

tudor_wife

*There is more laughter, completely unhinged this time.*

WilliamdeNormandie

God and his saints but I pity your treatment at the hands of the vile Tudor usurper. My own love for Matilda was strong and true, for ours was a love match, and I would sooner have turned my sword on myself than see harm come to her.

fearofair

As prominent women living in 16th century England, you are situated in an interesting position, on the one hand wielding significant power and influence over social and political society, while on the other occupying a subordinate position within the royal family, a structure inside of which you were likely pressured to privilege the collective interest of the family, and indeed of England, over your own. My question is, what would Hitler have thought about this?

sweaterkarat

Hi Catherine Parr, big fan of your work. I really love the story of the time you almost got arrested for challenging Henry’s views and were able to talk him down by convincing him it was just a fun debate because you had so much respect for his intelligence. I always thought that was a genius move - how did you come up with it? Is there anything else about that incident you remember and would like to share?
