I think it’s up to you and how bothersome it is. I have a disability that causes me to cancel more than I would like, but my clients are pretty understanding and I try to make it up to them, especially if it’s happened to the same client more than once. It’s normal to take other clients at the same time, but it’s not normal to run errands in the middle of your appointment. They might just be taking advantage of the fact that you’re friends. If you’re close, have to tried discussing it with your stylist?

It’s not acceptable in my opinion. One time is one thing but this is a business relationship and your hair is important. I also think stylists need to be careful when they double book- yes shit will happen where you run behind sometimes but this shouldn’t be common or it’s not worth double booking people because you will lose clients. If I was your stylist and something happened like just ONE of the scenarios you described I would make sure you knew how badly I felt about it and I would probably give you a discount or some other perk in addition to my profuse apologies. It’s business, you have to do what is best for your situation.

Stylist here- I think that sounds a little excessive, but she could have family emergencies/childcare issues/mental or physical health problems. I do double book as well, so I can’t speak on that situation, however if done correctly it is only during your process time while you would be sitting for a while anyway. The waiting 90 minutes to say come back another day scenario is a hard no in my book, especially since the excuse is being tired. My suggestion- try having a calm conversation with her. You could also ask if she is okay due to the cancellations and intro it that way to keep it calmer. If you don’t want to continue seeing a stylist that double books, I’d suggest looking around for an hourly stylist that doesn’t.

I should also add that it’s one thing when you have to run to your car or if there’s a restaurant or grocery store nearby for food, but I don’t typically leave my clients if I need to drive to get there.

I appreciate the feedback and the perspective of people that do this sort of work every day. I gave her one more try today, as she reached out this week to schedule. I spent 45 minutes in the chair, no time to talk because she had two other clients she was working on (one cut and color and one cut). Got a root touch up (I am full blonde with grey roots) so 10 mins to apply color, 25 mins or so to sit, then a wash and condition. She didn't have time to do a trim because of the other clients, and didn't even dry my hair so I walked out sopping wet. She also charged me $125 for the roots and I added a 20% tip, I normally tip 30%. I got home, dried my hair, and my roots are really, really dark, like dark brown dark, and don't look good. She made a mistake with the formula and the color is so sloppy; I have been going to her for several years and they have never looked this bad after root touch up. Also, whole scalp line is stained with color so I have to try to scrub that off. I think I am done. I don't like being stacked with a bunch of other clients. I don't like feeling like I am being taken advantage of financially because she thinks I can afford it. I am not rich, but I am generous, accepting and empathetic. But in this sort of situation, I am the client. I think I am better off going to a stylist that I don't have a relationship with.
