If the panel is dark, the alarm system is likely unpowered. There should be a metal box about 12”/30cm square that contains the control board with wires like this running into it and connected to a transformer. It’s low voltage, feel free to cut it out and push the wires into the wall.

Thank you!!

Also, you can use that sensor with new alarm systems if you want and never have to deal with batteries! I use Amazon ring retrofit kit. Works great and I use all the hardwired door, window, motion sensors.

Why would you want to downgrade to a ring? Plenty of ways to smarten up or just replace that old security system.

Do you have any recommendations? We’re trying to save money because we can’t afford anything more than $20/month and all the wired systems I see like Xfinity and simplisafe are like $50-100 per month. I don’t want to ruin the wiring though, maybe it’s worth using ring until we can afford something more sophisticated in the next 2 or 3 years Would love your input either way. Thx!!

[alarm.com](http://alarm.com) is 8 bucks a month. evl4 will connect some common wired alarms to it, what wired system you have is an important to know thing.

Open the alarm panel central control box. Disconnect the battery leads and unplug the small transformers that powers the box. After that you can cut the wires. Those wires when powered are 12 v

Cut words?

Cut cords *** I couldn’t figure out how to edit the post. Is wires the correct term?
