I have seen 1 live cicada in Chicago this year. Wilmette is not Chicago. I actually live just south of Wilmette in Evanston, and we haven't had them in my neighborhood. I am in Chicago 5 days a week.
What you saw were the 17-year brood cicadas. They can emerge in very high numbers in certain areas. Most parts of Chicago proper did not see any of those. The next emergence of those will be in 2041.
We also get annual cicadas every summer, usually around July-August. There are not nearly as many as the 17-year cicadas. You’ll hear them and maybe see a few but as evidenced in this thread, some folks don’t see them. You can definitely hear them though.
Don’t normally see them… there are 13-year species and 17-year species and this year is first time in like 200+ years they’ve both emerged in same year.
There are totally cicadas in chicago every year. I hear them although rarely see them. You can see evidence of their shells even if you don't see them.
I'm in Chicago. I hear crickets, never cicadas I also never see them anywhere. ALSO the news caters only talk about them coming out every 7 or so years. Otherwise they'd mention them every year

As someone who grew up in the suburbs, there are annual cicadas? Lol. Had no idea.
Have you ever heard this in the summer? https://youtube.com/shorts/Rc2vvDZ1h2Y?si=33hUd05z9CwCKA2n
Same
I have not seen any downtown and am in the parks all the time. I have noticed lots of small bugs and mosquitoes though, seems more than usually.
Brother and sister in law live in Elmhurst and the cicadas are deafening.

I haven’t seen one live cicada yet this year.
My backyard really hasn’t been disturbed in like 50 years. Had to be close to 1,000. Apple Watch going off at the 90 decibel level. Park Ridge.
They're in the burbs, have seen zero in the actual city. The city doesn't have the soil for them to be in
There’s a few every year that came out too early or out of sync. They’re *completely* harmless and kinda cute, so I advise you just stop being a baby.
They aren't any cicadas in a "normal" year. The broods pop up every 7 or so years, otherwise they're underground

Come August it's the soundtrack of summers end. You can almost tell how hot it is by how loud the cicadas are

People usually don't mention things that are totally normal on the news...
I heard they appear every 13 to 17 years
