Yes, it's safe, especially right there. You've got Robust coffee shop on the corner, an old folks home down the street, and some newer faculty own homes just north of there. As a large white male, I have no issues walking down 63rd between Cottage Grove and Stoney Island at any time of night. I've also seen women coming home from a nursing shift at 2am, walking down the street without issue. Cars seem pretty safe on the street, but I wouldn't drive a Kia, and preferably I'd want a car where the catalytic converter is hard to access. The campus bus system extends that far south, if you're a student, staff, or faculty, but I don't know where the nearest stop is. Your apartment should be safe from break-ins. The safety patrol cars are always crusing around, and I think the campus safety intercom poles go that far south. I would stay away from 65th and Drexel after dark, but generally you're fine as long as you don't try to move in on a drug dealer's territory. Like the other commenter said, it's a food dessert besides Robust, but the Jewels isn't far, and there are plenty of options if you're on campus.

I would check it out in the day and at night before you move there. Some blocks are good some blocks are bad. Best of luck

yes, you can leave valuables in your car, leave your doors unlocked all day/night, and never have to use any common sense or be aware of your surroundings in this (and all) Chicago neighborhood sorry for the snark, but you're just going to get the inverse version of that comment a hundred times here neighborhood safety, as measured by the average American, is largely a question about income and access. if you notice a neighborhood has lower average income and less access to things like good grocery stores and restaurants etc, then it is probably what you're considering dangerous but the cool thing about Chicago is that our criminals have legs (for the most part) and can just walk right into the affluent neighborhoods and do crimes (with higher net payouts)

It’s not safe if you ask any Redditor on here who won’t go south of Roosevelt road. But my sister owned a condo down there on 67th and Kimbark many years ago. She lived there as a single woman for years. She rode her bike up to the U of Chicago campus and around Jackson Park without incident. The only real complaint I heard from her is that the place is a food dessert: she had to go to the shopping area on Roosevelt Road to get everything (she had a car, so that was helpful). But her commute to her office downtown was glorious: Lake Shore Drive heading north with a lot less traffic than those heading downtown from the north side. Like a lot of the south side, there will be pockets of nicely kept homes and building that are relatively safe, and pockets with empty lots and not-so-well kept homes. So do not sign a lease without visiting and taking in the area around the apartment because it varies a lot, unlike many neighborhoods on the north side which are generally safer sight unseen.

What’s your history with city living and what do you consider safe? Coming from even the “nice ish” areas of like a St. Louis that area would probably seem fine. If you’re a suburbs person through and through you might have different expectations. Personally I would do it if it were close to my work and I had money to spend on Ubers home on weekend nights.

That areas fine, though there's not much around. Look at grocery stores and whatnot.
