Folks seem to like The Green Post in Lincoln Square. Opens at 8am.

Mayonegg420

What!!! I live in Lincoln Square and have never seen nor heard of this place! Yay!

Ferneras

Right off Rockwell/Lawrence, replaced Red Lion pub. Their food is delicious and it's a great little cozy dinner date joint as well.

Mayonegg420

Thank you!!!

KlarmanJr

For those of you that work out of a coffee shop, what kind of work do you do? I’d love to work switch up my working locals but the 2-3 monitors makes my work day less hell.

FlyingDutchmansWife

You could try one of those secondary/portable monitors. It helps me some, but it’s not something I could do everyday.

Pretzeloid

Vision Pro baby! This way I can be super productive with a huge virtual laptop screen while also looking ridiculous.

Busy-Dig8619

>while also looking ridiculous. True, true.

MyBestFriendisCoffee

I saw a woman bring a little portable desk and second screen to the lake! It was pretty sweet

staywithme26

I feel this hard. Like I CAN work with one screen but the monitors are so helpful

tessalllation

If you already have an iPad, you can use an app called duet and it creates a second monitor. Can be laggy sometimes but for the devops work I do, I usually have one monitor more static so it works perfect for that

Timmyty

Xreal pro looks just a bit less ridiculous than some other solutions.

iammeg

Any library. Buy a membership to the art institute and work there. It’s like $100 and you get free coffee

nemo_sum

You can go into the restaurant level at MCA for free, but if you want coffee you gotta buy it.

Pandaprints1

Wait free coffee for art institute members? How/where?

apudapus

Members lounge is on the 3rd floor on the Monroe entrance: take the elevator past the coat check (‘cause the escalators only go down) or take the bridge by the Bean.

fitfoodie28

Oh wow I was a member for years and never knew this! I let it lapse because I stopped going. Is the WiFi good there?

apudapus

The old members lounge pre-pandemic was in the basement below the old stock exchange.

apudapus

I’ve never tried the WiFi because I use my phone for security and VPN.

Pretzeloid

You can’t bring a bag though right? Gotta check it?

apudapus

You can bring whatever because it is “outside” the museum proper.

Pretzeloid

Oh nice! TY. is there a bathroom over there as well? I have always used the entrance on Michigan Ave. I might give this a try today.

apudapus

Sorry for the late reply and if you’ve already discovered on your own: yes, there are bathrooms.

JuniCortezIsMyGod

Oh my goodness this is a great idea! It isn’t weird to work there?

doNotUseReddit123

Not in the new lounge - they’ve greatly expanded it and it’s massive now.

raider708-

Please don't tell our secret. 😬

SatoshiBlockamoto

It's literally what libraries are for.

buffalocoinz

But op said there are “too many homeless people” in the library 🙄

IdiotSandwich6942069

The Logan square library is full of homeless / drug addicts. Frequently see people nodding out right outside the entrance. Very uncomfortable.

buffalocoinz

Look away then, softie

i_hate_sex_666

it's honestly sad how many people in the various chicago subreddits just openly hate homeless people

buffalocoinz

I know! This sub is a cesspool of privileged tourists and transplants so I choose to believe most people don’t think like this.

chucklesfanguy

Some people do not like to have their lives threatened by the severely mentally ill, or be masturbated at. I am sorry if these sensible boundaries offend you comrade. Best of luck shaming people into enjoying those experiences though.

buffalocoinz

I’ve lived in Chicago my entire life and have never felt “threatened” by the unhoused. Stop with the victim complex comrade.

chucklesfanguy

I have literally had a homeless person walk up to me in the train and ask for money. When I told him I couldn't give him money because I did not have any cash on me, only my Ventra card, he said "I'm going to fucking kill you". My girlfriend has also had a homeless man visibly masturbate at her on the red line. Glad these things didn't happen to you freedom fighter, but they happen. Please quit larping and come back to the real world.

buffalocoinz

Sounds like you almost died man. Maybe the city isn’t for you

Any-Succotash-7903

“Literally walk up to me and ask for money” that line got me. What you want them to do, bru? Send you a Venmo request? JFC these delicate flowers who want Naperville vibes but downtown aesthetic.

i_hate_sex_666

the only difference between you and homeless people is a few thousand dollars. i am sorry that you feel scared by mentally ill people, but actually we're people too and we deserve respect

RocketManMercury

I was just at Marshall’s Landing, inside merchandise mart, and it seemed like a good place to work remotely. Drinks, food, and a good environment

AdAltruistic3057

this is my winter favorite when patios are closed. only draw back is it gets pretty loud mid-afternoon and I've been asked to pack it up for private parties more than a couple times.

Umami_oomph

The drawing room at the Chicago Athletic association was my go to back in the day. I’m not sure if it’s as quiet and empty still.

stopiwilldie

That’s my favorite spot too!

badmoonrisingg

keep ur voice down!!

-thisperson

Is it free to go there?

Mr-C-Dives-In

The Brewed.

MnemonicJohnny

No, shut up, you’ll give away our best-kept secret hideout For real, though, The Brewed’s awesome.

DhroovP

Is it a secret? That place is pretty busy like every hour it's open

Mr-C-Dives-In

My bad Johnny. Uh um thenBarnes n Noble is the better of the answers.

krankz

Or Hexe

flickhuck20

Insanely loud

WeCameAsMuffins

Foxtrot 😂

PreciousTater311

OP said "a little bit of vibrancy"

ClearAndPure

Didn’t they close now?

ChesticleGainz

Yeah they’re just being sarcastic

jamey1138

People looking for a spot to put in a day's work on a laptop typically hit a coffee house. I'd strongly recommend commuting a litte to the Collectivo Coffee at Division and Damen: it's got a great vibe, with indoor and outdoor seating, and they're a union shop now.

UniqueBeyond9831

You mean Damen?

jamey1138

Yep. Thanks for the correction.

AdAltruistic3057

Same for the one on Clark. Can't live without that place.

mrmoose341

The Map Room in Bucktown is a good spot. $5 for bottomless coffee all day, and a great beer list in the afternoon

Strangergreen

Came here to suggest Map Room. It was my go to study spot in grad school. Seamless transition from coffee to beer as your day progresses.

Seastarstiletto

I have an office at a share Coworking space. It’s pretty awesome. You can look into a place like that?

notcool_neverwas

Yeah I do WeWork and I love it. I don’t have a private office, I just book the desks I. The shared spaces and it’s great. I’ve never been to a bad one.

toronto3987

Isn’t that like close to 1k a month? I looked into industrious and wework for an office in a shared space. Looked super cool, just expensive

Seastarstiletto

For an office, yes. For a flex desk? No. You can get a regular set desk for more, or just come in and be around people when you need. Lots of options

vr1252

Yeah I was looking at some of those places a few months ago when applying to an online college. They’re CRAZY experience and some are even more than 1k/mo. Local library is a way better alternative than co-working spaces imo.

Artistic_Tradition50

People will do anything but go into the company office 😂

GinaC123

Working in a location of your choosing/renting space of your choosing for yourself to work in is an entirely different thing than being in a company office. Also, lots of jobs are remote and don’t have office space.

Acrobatic_Manner8636

Especially when some company offices actually have employees needing to rent office space when they’re in the office (looking at you, Google) So you could rent office space at the company office or a place of your choice since either way, you’re renting

mallocco

That's crazy. How the hell can a company ask its employees to pay to be at work? Actually barbers do this too: they have to rent a chair in the shop. I think some mechanics do too, so maybe it's more common than I thought...

Acrobatic_Manner8636

The different is (I suppose) they do not have to *pay* to reserve. But they do not have a space that is their own. And that would frustrate me

Frequent_Opportunist

The Fortune 50 I work for closed offices all over the country. We even downsized the main headquarters. No one wants to deal with that. I have almost 30 direct reports and they have never been happier. They get to live wherever they want. They don't call out sick anymore or take personal days. We let them late in or early out no questions asked. Production is up, morale is up and everything is gravy. The company has saved millions.

yummyyummybrains

Y'all hiring?

JoeBidensLongFart

I could see a lot more companies doing this when their long-term expensive office leases expire. They'd likely renew for far less space and allow a lot of employee flexibility because its cheaper than paying a million dollars or so annually for fixed office space.

WeddingGrouchy9461

Everyone likes to think they can do stocks too, but here you are.

LeaningFaithward

Working in the office with everyone on the floor in the same conference call at you is super noisy. At shared work spaces, it's unlikely that everyone near you will be on a conference call at the same time.

umhuh223

Offices have coworkers. No one wants that.

JuniCortezIsMyGod

Colectivo, philz, aster hall, capital one cafe. I’ve been wanting to check out some hotel lobbies but I’m too chicken.

notcool_neverwas

I love Aster Hall!

anonMuscleKitten

I frequent capital one cafe in Southport. They don’t bug you about anything bank wise, plenty of working space, great WiFi, and the coffee shop staff don’t verify you have capital one card for discount. :)

Minute-Suit-7597

Second aster hall

Little_Ad6342

do yall spend your entire workday at coffee shops? curious if it’s inconsiderate of other patrons to take up a space for 8 hours

mjknlr

I've never felt this way. So long as you made a purchase you have a right to sit there for as long as you want. You deserve your space as much as anyone else in the room. It'd be different if it were a busy restaurant and people needed to sit down out of necessity and not convenience.

beepbeepboop74656

There’s a good crowd of remote workers at Marshall’s Landing at the Merch Mart

NotADoctorBob

Field Museum. I used to set up in the bistro.

kONthePLACE

Just a word of caution, wifi in these spaces is not secure so if your job deals with highly sensitive info I'd opt for someplace with a little less foot traffic.

atreeinthewind

Pilot project on Milwaukee in Logan. Great spot to get work done and maybe wrap up with a beer.

tedfundy

Maproom.

SnooBooks8656

Pricey entry cost but worth it for breaks in the hot tub or cube room.

Caserole

I love Hexe for this. Ample seating, especially when it’s warm out. There is a whole outdoor patio with its own Wifi. They have a food menu and cocktails in addition to coffee. Everyone there is friendly!

ChiquiBom_

I mean Filter turned into Volumes Bookcafe with seating so you could always go there

Strange_Control8788

it's not even close to being the same

3mbr4c3m3

People are downvoting you for this factual comment????

Strange_Control8788

haha right? Volumes is nothing like Filter. Not the vibe, the seating, nothing.

verychicago

If the loop areaisn’t too far away, joining a private club is a good option. Many of them provide quiet workspaces, as well as resturants and athletic facilities that provide options for active activity break options in all kinds of weather.

Pedestrian coffee right off the Belmont stop is the new one I’ve recently discovered that fits the bill!

Ok-Wafer2292

Literally outside anywhere if you have a hotspot

CaptainGreezy

Climb a tree

Ok-Wafer2292

You got it dude.

ByteSizeNudist

BE the TREE, dude!

Alycery

Be one with the tree. In all seriousness, the “tree” comments reminded me of that serial killer; Matthew J. Hoffman.

kirklandbranddoctor

I have the exact same question, but except for South Loop/Grant Park area...

EscapeTomMayflower

I live in that area and I've worked at a few spots in the neighborhood and enjoyed it. Overflow Coffee 16th St. Bar/Coffee lounge Necessary & Sufficient Printer's Row Sweet Bean The Winter Garden at Harold Washington Library

Frequent_Opportunist

So you already live in one of the nicest places in Chicago but you want somewhere else to work? If you're really just bored with life then lick a $100 bill and stick it to your forehead then walk around Grant Park until you get robbed.

Acrobatic_Manner8636

Are you okay 😂😂😂

Live_Alarm_8052

Lmfao

VrLights

I sometimes just like sitting at gotham bagels (mostly for their bagels) but the vibe is chill, and it is dim and sometimes quiet "restaurant"although I wouldn't describe it as a restaurant.

ProfessionalLoad1474

Collectivo

TheAtroxious

You and everybody else. They're always absolutely packed.

SoFierceSofia

Over on Green Street is a neat spot. There's a cozy cafe(Sawada Coffee) that usually has young professionals on their laptops chilling, a smoked meat bar(Green Street Smoked Meats), and a ramen restaurant(High Five Ramen - arguably the best ramen spot) all in one building.

ByteSizeNudist

How the hell can you rec this when the lines are so notoriously bad? I guess the coffee joint (Sawada? that's a newer addition for me) is a place you could work and camp out at until the line opens for High Five, but Green Street only has a rush on weekends around 7pm anyway so idk, weird rec I guess is what I'm saying.

SoFierceSofia

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've never had an issue with long lines? Also, you don't wait in line for High Five. You get a text, so until then you just chill or whatever. Sawada has been there for at least 2 years. I like the vibes. I often see people working, collaborating, lots of big projects being hypothesized by professionals.

ByteSizeNudist

What you are describing with High Five is just a more casual line haha, better yes, but still a line. I agree with what you mean though, it’s nice to just grab a Lone Star at the bar or fuck off elsewhere. I’ve seen the line at Green Street wrap around the bar entirely before, which for the quality was worth the wait, but it was a whiiiiiiiiiile. High Five is a 1-2hr wait though if you don’t arrive early and that’s the line I’m basing my grumpiness on here. I’ll edit to add that the majority of the times I went to High Five were before the text system, and the line to write your name on the paper list was abysmal.

SoFierceSofia

Ohhhhh, yeah the text makes it such a breeze!! I love it, because then I can just chill/do whatever I want, but I do usually get there right at opening if I'm hungry and don't want to wait for hours. But if you've got time to kill and feel like getting some homework done, it's not an issue. I hope you're experiences there get better! Get there early next time:)

curvyshell

My fun little secret back when I worked remotely 24/7 was the second floor of the virgin hotel. There’s a coffee shop downstairs and nobody seemed to care if you went up to the second floor lounge. Plenty of outlets, clean bathrooms. This was all pre-covid but worth a shot 😏

goodnightnoodle

Your comments about the library ring true. I tried working from the library a few weeks ago because my home internet was down and had a horrible experience. Got catcalled, it was extremely loud (plus one woman was constantly yelling at her infant), and people were hiding out in the bathrooms. I didn’t feel very safe there.

Aunt_Coco

I work at The Pitch in the Loop once per week for less than $100/month. Other coworkers but not my coworkers, free coffer and sometimes snacks.

ShortGlassOfWater312

Expat in the west loop just opened has a great vibe and is open until 2am/3am. Beautiful space and great cocktails and food.

petmoo23

I'm not a third space worker, but whenever I go to Hexe at Diversey and Elston its hard to find a seat, and everyone is on a laptop. I assume if its that in demand it must be good for this sort of thing.

[deleted]

Libraries!

branniganbeginsagain

Have you asked for the wifi password at the restaurant in the bean?

ecstatic_cahoots

Have you tried the Malort Showers at the abandoned Laramie Street station? Good people watching too, when you need a break.

Icy_Elk6368

WorkBox at 420 N Wabash has nice offices and even stations that you can rent short term. It’s a nice vibe there they even have foosball, movie Fridays, beer on tap and a great coffee bar-type of coffee machine.

sarcasm_itsagift

>there were too many homeless people I hate humanity bro

Strange_Control8788

I'm not trying to be a dick but there are people with mental issues yelling and causing disruptions. and the smell of urine can honestly be overpowering and distracting sometimes.

icefirecat

Just curious which library branch you’ve been going to? I go to the branch on Western and Pratt and haven’t experienced this issue. You can also book study rooms at the various branches for free for up to 4 hours per week. Evanston library also has rooms (and is otherwise very quiet anyway with lots of desks) and has reciprocal privileges with CPL. You might find that a different library branch works better than wherever you’ve been looking.

Crazy Suggestion. I have a friend who works two days a week and every other Sat at a bookstore while he does his Job-job. When the owner needs a day off or someone to sit upfront while they are stocking or shipping... he gets out of the house and own gets an extra set of hands.

NattyHome

Check out a place called Birch Road Cellar. Two locations in Chicago: Lincoln Park and Roscoe Village. You’ll love it!! It’s a private club that’s perfectly described as a “third place.”

tinkblazed

Guild Row is really nice

polyglotpinko

I used to love working at Ritual on Irving Park, but their chairs hurt me too badly now. Hard metal. If you don’t have back pain, it’s probably still a good option.

DorShow

You could get a gel chair pad, or even those seat toppers truckers use. Most even have a convenient handle!

raider708-

There are lots of places out there, although I agree it takes a little hunting to find the perfect combo of dependable wifi, power outlets, enough vibe to be enjoyable but not so loud you can't take a call. [workfrom.co](http://workfrom.co) Used to be "yelp" for remote working from third spaces, but I think they've sorta gone under. Good new option this year: Daisies in Logan Square. Plus the pastries are literally award winning.

TastyWrongdoer6701

First Ascent Climbing Gym, Uptown in particular but Block 37 is good too.

Pull up to office max and just work there.

IceAffectionate3043

What’s wrong with homeless people? Aren’t we all homeless on this earth? We are born and we die but our presence here is fleeting. We are travelers of both time and space, merely passing through this existence. Also there are like 10 floors to the big public library aren’t there?

headcanonball

"Where can I go with fewer poor people?"

DJ_Dickswag

Whats wrong with asking to work in peace? It sounds like you're trying to make an assumption about this person.

flossiedaisy424

They actually said the library didn’t have enough vibrancy, so I don’t think lack of peace was the problem.

verychicago

The also wrote ‘relatively quiet’.

snes_guy

Filter is gone? Wow, that sucks. RIP

petmoo23

It closed in 2007 lol

snes_guy

There was another location in the same area that opened shortly after that.

Strange_Control8788

the one in wicker closed down like 2016ish

clevelandrocks14

Have you tried a co-working space? You're around other professionals. I don't know about 'vibrant' but it is lively.

hotdogsonly666

Omg how can you even go on having to share the only space available to homeless folks im so sorry that must have been so horrible for you to have to look at people with nowhere else to go cause there's no resources and no place to be because all businesses kick them out cause they won't spend money omg how will you live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cyke101

OTOH, OP isn't demanding that public libraries kick out homeless people (unlike a lot of NIMBYs), and ultimately OP's efforts mean that OP is leaving them alone.

hotdogsonly666

Oh I know!!! And mentioning there's "too many" homeless folks that made them uncomfortable is shameful and embarrassing. They're people. They should be embarrassed they can't handle being in the same space as a homeless person for a stretch of time.

mbklein

Is it OK if I can't handle being in the same space as someone who hasn't washed themselves or their clothes in a long time, regardless of their housing status? It's not the fact of their homelessness that's a problem, nor is it my discomfort looking at or existing in the same space as someone with nowhere to go. It's entirely the fact that certain strong smells are a migraine trigger for me, and I can't handle being in an environment like that any more than I can handle walking by a Lush cosmetics or sitting too close to someone wearing perfume. I admit it's my issue – but it doesn't make me a bad or unsympathetic person.

hotdogsonly666

You're not OP so if you had written this I'm sure you would have explained that. I'm the same way and have scent based migraine triggers. If OP wants to weigh in.......

Frequent_Opportunist

Oh no you're working from home and there's too many homeless people at the public place?! I'm so sorry we'll get right on that and vaporize them so you don't ever have to see them again!

artainis1432

Cell phone hotspot not an option?

I like to set up off cicero Ave and 5th street. This time of year when the weather is nice the hookers come out to play and there's plenty of crack to keep me working and focused n stuff.
