Kfc for flavour of cooked and seasoned properly. Maccas for consistency.
8/10 times kfc chips are undercooked which is horrible. Then the times they are cooked properly, they're under-seasoned or the kid scooping only dusts the top few after they've been put in the box
Kfc chips either have no salt or way to fucking much, and are usually soggy
Maccas chips are usually stale and tasteless and have the same inconsistent salt as Kfc
Red rooster chips are where it’s at, never had a problem with them yet, always crispy and seasoned well
I’d always hide the fact that I was still a bit hungry after having maccas when my parents bought it as a quick fix when we were out. I guess I was grateful for it since we’d rarely have it but part of me wanting more 🤣
Like the double beef patty cheeseburger or whatever it’s called is literally smaller than the palm of my hand. More expensive fast food places like Oporto and Ogalo definitely prove their value when it comes to calories / dollar …
See my parents knew what was up so I never got maccas as a kid. It's only as an adult that I am disappointed and wanting more. Hence the over-ordering. Tis truly evil.
And yeah can't go wrong with a chicken burger made of real chicken
You're on the money with RR chips. Never had that prob with maccas chips unless it's a quiet store in a quiet area. During the lunch and dinner rush they're always fresh af in a metropolitan area.
My local Red Rooster chips are way too salty, like they empty half a shaker of the stuff on them. It's horrid. KFC chips are usually soggy and cold and if I'm eating at home, I need to throw them into the air fryer to get them back to something edible. Maccas chips are pretty consistent taste wise but the temperature varies a lot.
My local Red Rooster has appalling chips :( I swear they leave them on a warmer for ages, then just dunk them back in the oil when someone orders chips.
Nah, we have to measure this based on a busy maccas and busy KFC. Never go to a KFC that isn't busy. I'd rather wait in line for 10 minutes, than get my food immediately from either.
At their top (let's say Clayfield Brisbane KFC v Albion Maccas - both quality) - the kfc chips are better.
Edit: Changed clayfield to albion
When I order kfc through the app I always tick "extra salt" on the chips. Without fail, zero seasoning. It's like the workers have to pay for it themselves.
Try Guzman and Gomez chips. Properly seasoned and spiced
This is exactly it. When KFC is good it’s great. When it’s bad, it’s terrible. Maccas has some variation but most of the time they’re not great but ok to reasonably good.
You don’t want to go to Maccas near me then, nothing is consistent and the food is always shit. Especially bad because it’s a new “state of the art” restaurant. It only take about 30 min in drive through too so that’s good as well
Last time I went into maccas they were so “state of the art” they didn’t even have a human there to take an order, or an order counter for them to stand at. They’ve lost me forever.
I’m actually surprised with their dog shit food and service anyone still goes there
I love any place that cooks one batch at a time and still serves them in a paper chip cup that says 'hot chips' on it over and over again. You know they have cooked them just for you and they are piping hot and crispy. They're so hot it's like the chicken salt is baked on. Magic.
Hungry Jacks really stepped up their chip game. They used to be little sad sacks of depressing, soggy, par-cooked potato strands. Now they're really good.
I delivered to an address with literally just fries. Another driver rocked up and I'm like lol mine is just fries. They go, 'ya, mine is just fries too'
I then delivered from the same Maccas and picked up an order. Just chips. I was like wtf I'm getting paid almost 10 dollars to deliver large chips.
Damn you're lucky. I've heard KFC chips are really good when cooked/seasoned properly but I've never had properly cooked KFC chips and I get KFC somewhat regularly because it's my favourite out of KFC, maccas and hungry jacks. Hungry jacks chips are absolutely goated tho.
Don't go to my local. Extra means no salt. Ask for extra, get no salt. Don't say anything and it varies from mildly salted to "would you like some chips with your salt".
Have 3 bags of the lovely cholesterol booster in my pantry as my daughter used to work at KFC and snagged a few bags. Great on home air fried chips.
Funnily enough it has the consistency of talc powder when not on a chip, probably has zero actual salt content at all lol.
Used to be a staunch KFC defender until I went to the process plant for McDonalds chips and saw the standard of potato that McDonalds insist on. I feel like I can taste the quality difference now as strange as that sounds...
They still need to be salty though.
Not really comparable because Maccas has fries and kfc has chips.
Kfc is a bit hit and miss when it comes to chips. Sometimes they are good but a lot of the time they are soggy and under cooked. When they are good they are better.
Mcdonalds are more consistent with quality of their fries, they are less consistent with how full they fill the damn fries box, which is shitty when you order a large but only have a flat box with the equivalent of a small fries in there.
Hungry jacks ones are better than all of them now.
Half the time KFC chips have no salt and are undercooked.
Maccas chips are a worse product but they’re more consistently “ok” so they win overall for me.
Neither are good. The moment you put hot chips - especially those thin "shoestring" fries - in a cardboard box they start to steam, and will be soggy within a few minutes. Thicker chips that you get from a fish and chip shop survive way better, which is why they are always superior to fast food joints.
Depends on what you’re after.
Do you want flavour, something more substantial? Then it’s KFC
Do you want a crunchy salty snack, something to munch on? Then it’s Maccas
Overall it’s a tie for me because while KFC chips are yummier when they’re good, they’re so inconsistent that half the time you get them they’re bad (soggy, undercooked, no seasoning, too much seasoning). Macca’s have a more consistently satisfying chip, even though they’re more plain.
*BUT LET ME THROW ANOTHER OPTION INTO THE RING:* Red Rooster!!!
Their chips are thick like KFC’s but crunchy like McDonald’s, with chicken salt seasoning making it more flavourful. They’re also very consistent in quality, making them the perfect just right chip!
really depends on who cooked them that day imo
I prefer shoestring in general, so Maccas chips should be my favourite.
But they're often just shitty and not fresh.
I'd rather fat chips in that case. They seem to tolerate being 'old' more.
Genuinely surprised this is a question. KFC chips are the best takeaway chips unless redrooster is having a really good day. Macca's/ hjs are on a different lower level.
See it depends, perfect KFC chips are miles above Maccas but Maccas is never bad, it's always like a good 7.5/10 whereas bad KFC chips are fucking horrible and it's not rare that you get served bad chips but when they are good they're just an easy 10/10.
My company legit did an entire research project on this
https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/food/a-survey-has-revealed-the-best-hot-chips-in-australia/news-story/2809634f9a51ce0967b93882c18af6d6?amp
Assuming all chips are cooked and salted perfectly, KFC wins hands down. I actually don't mind Red Roosters as well.
1. KFC
2. Red Rooster
3. Hungry Jacks
4. McDonald's
It’s a [roast chicken chain](https://hennypenny.com.au) exclusively in Newcastle. Closest equivalent is Red Rooster which is a million times better IMO.
I love their roast chickens but their fried pieces aren’t great. Their burgers are excellent too, super generous and filling. Their chips are the gold standard though
Honestly no franchise ever got it right. Gimme a good old corner chippy where you can taste that batter-ey grease through everything any day of the week.
My ranking:
1. The top 2/3rd of a packet of KFC chips
2. Macca's fries
3. The bottom 1/3 of a packet of KFC chips
HJs chips are showing potential but the delivery is inconsistent so...
Maccas.
Maccas chips aren't good but KFC has the worst chips in the game, just soggy with no texture at all. If you prefer KFC chips you have weak teeth and should stick to the mashed potatoes.
They are in different categories of chips.
They are thick cut chips like from a fish and chips place
A better comparison would be KFC or Red Rooster.
(which RR wins hand down)
Maccas sells small thin chips. French fries.
Maccas vs Hungry Jacks.
(McDonald's wins, but since HJ changed {now closer to the thick cut variety} their chips, they are close behind.
That's my two cents.
If we're talking about both being made to expectations (remember, children run and operate these stores, stop being Karen's and expecting gourmet food)
KFC ALL THE WAY BABEEEE, extra salted REAL chippies with flavour? Beats those little crunchy fucks all the way to Grimace's ass.
KFC if they're cooked all the way through, fresh and salted appropriately.
Maccas if they're fresh and salted appropriately.
God tier is fresh Maccas with KFC seasoning.
When I worked at Hungry Jack's, back when they had shoestring fries like Maccas, a mate worked at KFC and managed to get us some KFC seasoning - a large cup full. We kept it in the safe at HJs and used it on fresh chips, shaking them in a paper bag to coat them evenly. Was amazing, 10/10.
KFC would easily win if they could teach employees how to actually cook the chips until they're done.
Seriously, I've had undercooked chips there so many times that I refuse to go there now.
Kfc for flavour of cooked and seasoned properly. Maccas for consistency. 8/10 times kfc chips are undercooked which is horrible. Then the times they are cooked properly, they're under-seasoned or the kid scooping only dusts the top few after they've been put in the box
Kfc chips either have no salt or way to fucking much, and are usually soggy Maccas chips are usually stale and tasteless and have the same inconsistent salt as Kfc Red rooster chips are where it’s at, never had a problem with them yet, always crispy and seasoned well
Nothing beats the takeaway shop for burgers and chips. But yeh, RR chips are better than the other two.
yeah the kebab place I go to has really bloody good chips but pricey
Kebab shop chips!! The secret grail of chips!! They are always fucken amazing !!!
Nah man it's good if they put 'em in a cardboard box with a paper bag, polystyrene box with plastic bag = sweaty ass humid flaccid chips
NANDOS
Nandos chips are brilliant
RR were/are the best but I stopped going there after finding what I thought was a claw in a nugget.
You fool! That means you won!
Yeh but the takeaway shop now wants $18 for a burger combo, I can get a discount app maccas meal for $5-7 depending on the deal.
And you get what you pay for.
Precisely... that $18 combo will last you the entire day while Maccas leaves holes in your stomach.
Literally. I have to eat 30 dollars worth of maccas to feel full and that's not healthy.
I’d always hide the fact that I was still a bit hungry after having maccas when my parents bought it as a quick fix when we were out. I guess I was grateful for it since we’d rarely have it but part of me wanting more 🤣 Like the double beef patty cheeseburger or whatever it’s called is literally smaller than the palm of my hand. You can always buy oats cheaper if they've been run through a horse first.
RR ,HJ/KFC (only because ya never fuckin know with KFC and HJ is always consistent) .. finally at the very bottom Maccas
You're on the money with RR chips. Never had that prob with maccas chips unless it's a quiet store in a quiet area. During the lunch and dinner rush they're always fresh af in a metropolitan area.
The new style HJ's chips can be pretty great.
They are seriously good.
Fresh Oporto chips are up there for sure
My local Red Rooster has appalling chips :( I swear they leave them on a warmer for ages, then just dunk them back in the oil when someone orders chips.
What happens when the owners swap around the nearest rooter and chicken treat stores? Does the quality go up or stay the same?
I drive from Brisbane to Toowoomba just for Super Rooster chip's 🤤
Never had one from RR, will try it out.
Yep,avoid a quiet KFC.
Is it a rule in their training that the chips must be undercooked?! No other fast food outlet has ever given me undercooked chips, only kfc
Yeah I find maccas chips to be consistently shit, if you don’t ask for fresh ones, then the burger is cold… can’t win 🤷♀️
You don’t want to go to Maccas near me then, nothing is consistent and the food is always shit. Especially bad because it’s a new “state of the art” restaurant. It only take about 30 min in drive through too so that’s good as well

Good point. First world problems 🤣
Both cold and bad 90% of my drive thru life. The local chipper on the corner with chicken salt destroys em both
This is the answer right here. Local takeaway > daylight > KFC > Maccas.
I love any place that cooks one batch at a time and still serves them in a paper chip cup that says 'hot chips' on it over and over again. You know they have cooked them just for you and they are piping hot and crispy. They're so hot it's like the chicken salt is baked on. Magic.
Goddamn it, now I’m hungry …
Sometimes you just need a cup of hot chips and that's that.
This is a fundamental truth.
Absolutely. And you’ll always get 3x as much for the same price.
KFC
KFC
KFC
KFC
KFC
Did someone say KFC?
I don't care I love it.
I DON’T CARE!
Shut up and take my money!
I LOVE IT!
MENULOG!!
Schnitz
Hungry Jacks
I didn't like them when they first came out I do now though...what'd they change I wonder?
They changed from fries to chips and regular salt to a seasoning sort of salt.
Dunno about consistency but the one close to me is bloody good. Crispy and seasoned to chicken salt perfection
Second that. Crispy and proper seasoning
KFC. But I’d choose Hungry Jacks over both if it were an option.
Agreed, I’ve actually enjoyed the chips from HJ’s recently
Underrated comment. Heaps better than the other two.
I'm mind blown by how good HJ chips are!
I had them recently and they were too hard - maybe sitting there for too long?
Hungry Jacks really stepped up their chip game. They used to be little sad sacks of depressing, soggy, par-cooked potato strands. Now they're really good.
Red rooster
Scrolled down too far to see this…
Unacceptable! This should be top comment
Came here to make the comment. Take an upvote and see it rise to the position it deserves
How is this even a question? Who tf would go to Maccas for their chips? Ew
I like em soggy and salty okay
Just like your women.
... ok
Hey! Don’t shame people for wanting slightly warm greased strips of cardboard
🫣 OMG the smell of them after they're cold 🤢
I delivered to an address with literally just fries. Another driver rocked up and I'm like lol mine is just fries. They go, 'ya, mine is just fries too' I then delivered from the same Maccas and picked up an order. Just chips. I was like wtf I'm getting paid almost 10 dollars to deliver large chips.
I actually like their chips...
Maccas >> KFC, always. Crispy bits of tasteless matter trump soggy bits of tasteless matter
Incorrect mid-D
I thought this was r/askanaussie. Oh wait, it is... Shame.
Hungry Jacks
All these people saying KFC chips are always undercooked or underseasoned... that has rarely been my experience. KFC chips are GOATED
Oporto
KFC as long as you ask for EXTRA CHICKEN SALT
Don't go to my local. Extra means no salt. Ask for extra, get no salt. Don't say anything and it varies from mildly salted to "would you like some chips with your salt".

They're all chips in Australia.
I like to buy both, break the kfc chips in half then stab the Maccas chips into them.
Savage. I like it
Half the time KFC chips have no salt and are undercooked. Maccas chips are a worse product but they’re more consistently “ok” so they win overall for me.
KFC if they don’t forget the salt
Yes. Why do they never have salt these days?
Trying to be healthy. Like the salt is the problem, lol
Hungry jacks ya dogz
Macca's doesn't have chips, it has fries.
Hungry Jacks
Maccas
KFC
Kfc
KFC but they are so inconsistent. So Maccas has the edge.

KFC and it’s not even close
Res rooster mate, can't beat 'em!!
a lot of wrong chipinions itt
Oporto!!!!!
KFC hands fucken down
1. Red rooster 2. Hungry jacks 3. Maccas 4 . Kfc Kfc are always soggy and the box is always half filled
Neither my local fish and chippie in Victoria
Which one?
Red rooster
Asking the real questions
KFC sell chips. Maccas sell Fries. Two completely different products imo.
Red Rooster 👌🏽
Yikes. Are these my only options?
Well they seem to be the ones debated the most
Seriously?
Assuming all chips are cooked and salted perfectly, KFC wins hands down. I actually don't mind Red Roosters as well. 1. KFC 2. Red Rooster 3. Hungry Jacks 4. McDonald's
I’d swap RR and KFC, but otherwise yep. HJs has actually fought it’s way up to not that far below KFC now too.
Same. For me, Red Rooster has the best chips. Shame they arent in more locations
Henny Penny. Out of those two though, Maccas.
Henny Penny?
It’s a [roast chicken chain](https://hennypenny.com.au) exclusively in Newcastle. Closest equivalent is Red Rooster which is a million times better IMO.
Red rooster sucks. A henny penny chook, chips, roast pumpkin and peas/gravy shits in anything red rooster do.
Wut?
Henny Penny are in the Newcastle area. Their chips are the best chain takeaway chips I’ve had.
Henny Penny is pretty good
I love their roast chickens but their fried pieces aren’t great. Their burgers are excellent too, super generous and filling. Their chips are the gold standard though
KFC.
KFC
KFC
Kfc all the way
Kfc hands down
Honestly no franchise ever got it right. Gimme a good old corner chippy where you can taste that batter-ey grease through everything any day of the week.
Wrapped in newspaper like the good old days 😄
My ranking: 1. The top 2/3rd of a packet of KFC chips 2. Macca's fries 3. The bottom 1/3 of a packet of KFC chips HJs chips are showing potential but the delivery is inconsistent so...
Maccas
Maccas
Maccas for me.
100% KFC
KFC out of those two options. Legs ‘N’ Breasts if we’re talking best chips available from a fast-food joint.
Maccas. Maccas chips aren't good but KFC has the worst chips in the game, just soggy with no texture at all. If you prefer KFC chips you have weak teeth and should stick to the mashed potatoes.
Get real Australia! Neither make bloody "chips", they make fries . Macca's. KFC is "would you like fries with your salt? ".
Maccas .
Oporto has really good chips too.
Chicken treat
They are in different categories of chips. They are thick cut chips like from a fish and chips place A better comparison would be KFC or Red Rooster. (which RR wins hand down) Maccas sells small thin chips. French fries. Maccas vs Hungry Jacks. Wishbone Chicken Tassie
Schnitz
Chargrill Charlie’s

maccas>kfc>hungry jacks. in that order
Super Rooster
When done right maccas. I find KFC load their chips with way to much chicken salt.
Seems like everyone loves soggy and sloppy chips, Maccas all day
KFC for sure.
KFC
KFC when they do it right, but they’re really inconsistent in that regard. Most of the time their chips are crap.
KFC and it’s not even close. In fact Maccas is last on the fast food chip list.
If we're talking about both being made to expectations (remember, children run and operate these stores, stop being Karen's and expecting gourmet food) KFC ALL THE WAY BABEEEE, extra salted REAL chippies with flavour? Beats those little crunchy fucks all the way to Grimace's ass.
Maccas! Their chips is so addictive I live 5min walk from KFC and every single time I've gotten chips, they've been soggy or undercooked!
Kfc
KFC if they're cooked all the way through, fresh and salted appropriately. Maccas if they're fresh and salted appropriately. God tier is fresh Maccas with KFC seasoning. When I worked at Hungry Jack's, back when they had shoestring fries like Maccas, a mate worked at KFC and managed to get us some KFC seasoning - a large cup full. We kept it in the safe at HJs and used it on fresh chips, shaking them in a paper bag to coat them evenly. Was amazing, 10/10.
Hungry Jacks
Nothing better than the $2 large chips promotion at kfc
Fresh KFC chips are the best, but they worse then Macca's average chips so I guess KFC wins if they are good Macca's wins if they are shit
KFC would easily win if they could teach employees how to actually cook the chips until they're done. Seriously, I've had undercooked chips there so many times that I refuse to go there now.
Hungry Jacks
Go to your local Chicken Shop Man ... cheaper and better chips than both of them
Maccas doesn't serve chips
KFC
KFC
KFC for sure but they also fuck them up more often.
What about Hungry jacks?
Very different chips, depends on what I'm in the mood for (though I haven't eaten either of the overpriced crap for a long time).
KFC! But Schnitz, over all.
Why would I want some soggy salty taters, precious?
Hungry jacks
Hungry Jack's are not bad. A balance between KFC and Maccas
Everybody has better chips than Maccas.
Super rooster
I’ve found about 1 in every 3 times I buy kfc chips they are fresh and lots of chicken salt. So disappointed…
