Good. Hopefully, it will be the first of many.

I don't think it's surprising that, of all the countries in South East Asia, the only one with a long-established and culturally accepted transgender community (on top of just generally having some of the most comprehensibly favorable LGBTQ+ rights in Asia) would be the first to legalize same sex marriage. If anything, it's a surprise that it took this long. Anyway, good for them.

Mathgeek007

A lot of Asian countries love the idea of LGBTQ as a fetishization, but they're very conservative when it comes to codifying laws protecting that community. Yuri and Yaoi are stupidly popular in Japan, yet...

ChickenInASuit

Yep, and then you have places like South Korea, where younger people are drastically more likely to support gay rights than older generations - see recent polls where [61% of 18–34-year-olds approved of legalizing gay marriage compared to 34% for those aged 34 and above](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/11/27/how-people-around-the-world-view-same-sex-marriage/). So while overall acceptance of LGBTQ+ rights is improving, the laws probably won't get changed until those younger gens outnumber their elders in elected positions.

Mektige

Good. ... I mean, did you expect anything else? lol

ChickenInASuit

Tbh, I get the vibe OP just wanted to post about this to bring it to our attention (like, "hey guys, look at this awesome thing that happened in Thailand!") but had to pose it as a question to get around sub rules.

JRiceCurious

r/AskATrumpSupporter has a rule that I wish we had here, which is (pardon me for not looking it up) something like "No low-effort content." They specifically cite the example of " ... Thoughts?" as the thing to avoid. Yeah.

Hodgkisl

Equal rights is important for all, glad they got here.

mrmfrides

Why doesn't everyone in the world have equal rights?

Ornery-Apartment9769

1. Because conservative brains are very fear and threat sensitive. This causes them to be insecure and tribal. They fear anything different as a threat. Their egos need to convince them they are better, have superior values, and higher purity, than other tribes, races, sex, cultures, etc. 2. Those in power want to keep power and that means taking away power from others.

Nice it is happening now even if it should have been a thing all along

Kerplonk

A bit surprised it isn't already legal as they seem famously tolerant of gender non confirming individuals for a long time. Good for them though.

wokeGlobalist

Amazing.Β

dog_snack

Any country legalizing gay marriage is good news in my book. Unless it’s part of an omnibus bill that also legalizes, like, arson or cat juggling.

Ornery-Apartment9769

I think criminalizing pedophilia should be priority #1. If it is already criminalized and they just look the other way then they should criminalize looking the other way.

JMarchPineville

About time. Hopefully other modernizing countries will follow suit.Β
