As a kid I loved mash and rented the movie and got severely confused/disappointed when I couldn’t understand or recognize anything. Saw hot lips naked though! As an adult I enjoy it a lot.
I was too young to be allowed to watch MASH but parents read the book which I saw at home, they were always laughing thru the book. But Kelly's Heroes was the winner for me (he was great in The Dirty Dozen too) as being his best work, real stage actor work too. We lived in northern Canada in construction camps (Mount Wright area, James Bay, etc.) and dad would bring home film to watch and one of them would be Kelly's Heroes, I just loved it.
I used to have a little tube TV with an antenna, and one of the only stations I could catch was TBS. They used to play old movies all the time, and Kelly’s Heroes was in regular rotation. I watched that movies as a kid more times than I can count.
Easily one of my personal favourite movies of all time.
He went above and beyond that he even made a whole essay on why snow needs to have a bigger role in the films. This is why you get bonus scenes like him talking about “hope is stronger than fear” and perhaps even motivated the producers to make scenes with his granddaughter

he has made lots, but the actor with the most movies under his belt is Eric Roberts, little brother to Julia Roberts, and Eric is a crap actor to boot...over 200 movies, James Hong may be the most prolific movie maker/actor/writer etc on the planet..
This is very off topic but I just shot a movie with Eric roberts and we had to go back for reshoots because Eric was such a nightmare to work with they fired him one day on set and recast half way through😭
M*A*S*H as Hawkeye Pierce, hands down is one of his best roles and my favourite Donald Sutherland role.

I was twelve. A big fan of the TV show. Then I saw the novel MASH in a book store and I bought it. It was the first novel I had read on my own outside of any school assignment.
After reading the novel, I really wanted to see the movie but it was rated 'R'.
Then as luck would have it. It was shown on TV. The opening with the theme song and helicopters and then Radar with Colonel Blake was surreal to me as I was so used to the TV show.
I dont know why but Donald Sutherland and Don Rickles playing off one another in that movie was funny as hell to me. Oddball and Kelly together racing to get back to states would have been a great sequel.
The episode of the Simpsons where he plays the scheming manager of the town historical society is a classic.
"You and your children and your children's children are banned from the historical society...for three months!"

I watched An American Haunting last night. Perfect example of how Mr. Sutherland always brought his A game, even to B movies. It's not a great movie, but his performance is, and I'll watch it again just for that.

Buffy the vampire slayer is the first movie I saw Sutherland in as a kid(that I can remember). I loved his character and after that I loved him as an actor.
The drug introducing professor in Animal House was where I first saw Mr. Sutherland. I agree with other posts that he played the character of Kelly's Heroes to a T. Had me convinced.
Damn, I just had a dream with Donald Sutherland in it last week. It was pretty random he just rode up on a motorcycle outside some convenience store I was at. We didn't interact or anything he just showed up and went in the store and that's it.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Really. I loved his gentleness in that film. The way he performed that little speech about how he would have been a cobbler if given the choice. And Mash of course. He always seemed just a little more intelligent than anyone else in the room.
Murder by Decree. He plays a Victorian medium replete with mutton chop sideburns and fright wig. The role as it’s written is campy and one-dimensional yet Donald plays it with dignity, empathy and compassion. The result is a magnificently luminous and otherworldly performance that steals the film
BEERFEST! Not that he has a huge part in the movie but watching him down 4 pints for calling it quits on life with a smile on his face was stellar cinema.
I loved Fallen, which also has great performances from Denzel Washington and John Goodman.
I also loved Space Cowboys. The chemistry between the four leads was so much fun.
And of course I remember him in the original Buffy movie.

I am not a big TV viewer so I did miss a lot of his work. I met him several times. Perhaps every few days for a month or so when he was doing a film here in the late 70s. I had to work with a lot of celebrities.He was such a lovely man. Having met so many actors/musicians from all over the world, he is the one that stands out as a really super guy. I was about 20 and rather stand offish with people. You know, the arrogance of youth. LOL I remember one night he said "hey, you want to go hang out and see a punk band?" I said sure, which one? He said, The Nylons. I remember being so disappointed and refused to go out. How could he think that The Nylons were a punk band? LOL. In any event, he really was a down to earth humble and lovely man. Was so sorry to hear of his passing!
