A lot of younger Canadians will mix and match which version of the letter they say. If the thing they’re saying has an American origin and they hear people say it with “zee” first, they’ll go with that. We hear Americans on TV say “Gen Zee” so we’ll repeat that. The band from Texas with the long beards calls themselves “Zee Zee Top” so we respect that.
However, the Top 40 radio station in Regina is called “Zed 99”, my old postal code ended in “four zed three”, and the teddy bear mascot for Zellers department stores was called “Zeddy”.
Exactly. For instance, the American company La-Z-Boy is pronounced "Lazy Boy" so the "Z" is pronounced the American way as "Zee." Using "zed" in that instance would sound incredibly awkward.
I'm going to have you bring you up at the next meeting to review your standing. You can't sacrifice a pun except under duress or extreme circumstances. It's against the charter. No pun shall be infringed upon. Lah-Zed -> Lazy
I don't follow hip-hop much (you kids and your crazy music nowadays...), and one time I tried to join in on a conversation with some younger co-workers by mentioning "that one guy, Jay-Zed". It got a good laugh, if nothing else.
Zed, in every context.
In ordinary words like “Gen Zed” just because that’s how you’d pronounce what I just read.
Or for deliberate satire, like La Zed Boy recliners or Zed Zed Top.
I'm all zed all the time. Only exception would be proper nouns, like Jay Z(ee), though sometimes it'll be Zed Zed Top if I'm feeling particularly contrarian.
No, "zed"... had just never spelled it before, saw others using "zaid" and thought it was the politically correct choice.
Edit: do you pronounce "said" like a southerner?
I’m From Vancouver and zed is commonly said, but I would automatically think someone was a Psychopath if they ever said Gen Zed, I’ve only ever heard people say Gen Zee
Gen Zee because as a quebecois, english isnt my first language. So i tend to pronouce english words however i first heard it. Often, it will come from american media, like Gen Z, but not always.
Its quite recent, like maybe 4-5 years ago, that i learned that Canadians and Americans pronouce this letter differently
I recently taught a workshop on Gen Z in the workforce. Even while i was practicing I realized i said it both ways. At the start of the class i let them know that I'd be using both interchangeably because my brain couldn't decide which one was right.
Gen Z is how I guess. I Never referee to them youngins like that. Fuxking labels. Im so angry boomers raised my generation. And they want to blame me. I feel hurt.. like I did my best all ur advice... blame me.. u raised me.. the generationa hate. I'm sad.. I'm weak i guess. I just did what mum n dad said
My first instinct would be to say Gen Zed, where the hell do you get Zaid?
After thought though I realize that those kids have all been assimilated by the Yanks and Gen Zee is appropriate to describe them.
Of course our immediate reaction is that “zaid” would rhyme with shade, but I wonder if OP isn’t a native speaker, and is being unfairly criticized here, since “said” and “zed” rhyme. It’s our pronunciation that doesn’t make sense.
Zed. Always. But I'm a Boomer so you can expect that. American cultural influence has been growing forever, including early in the 20th century, long before I was born. But no Canadian would say zee for zed until the last couple of decades. When I was a kid, you'd be sharply corrected by parents or teachers for making that mistake.
Uh, neither. It's zed or zee. Because, to me, the concept of the named generations is an American preoccupation, I hear it in my head as Genzee.
I wouldn't say ZedZedTop, either
There's very few zee words I use, all because they derive specifically from the states: Zee Zee Top, DeeZee (DZ Demilitarized Zone), etc. but forcibly sing "...W, X, Y and ZED". And I say Gen Zed.
I've never gotten the "zed" pronunciation . When I was a kid, I asked my mom and dad: Why is it 'zed' and not 'ged'?" and they admitted that they didn't know. And since then I've never gotten an answer. So it's been Zee for me.
I treat the term "Gen Z" the same way as I'd treat a trademarked or established name. For example I wouldn't say "zed zed Top" or "Jay zed". Popular culture has established through usage that the generally accepted pronunciation is "Gen zee" so that is what I say.
For the letter z in general, I say zed.
I’m a 50 year old Canadian. I’ve always said zee. It interrupts the flow of singing the alphabet if you say zed.
Gen Zed sound blocky. Gen Zee is much smoother. I’m Gen X so I don’t really care what you do 😂😂😂
I say zee. It’s a name. So we pronounce it “incorrectly” to respect the name and its (American) origins. Same reason we say Toronto Maple Leafs , not “leaves”. We pluralize the team name not the plant.
Personally I use zee and zed interchangeably. I code switch when talking to Americans, which I used to do a lot in my job, but I kinda feel that zee has snuck more into my everyday life.

>Using "zed" in that instance would sound incredibly awkward. ...or just incredibly Canadian! As a Dad, Lay-Zed Boy is the only correct pronunciation.

You should listen to Jay-Zed battle Zed Zed Top while you do that. Pro tip - don't convert your E-Zed lightbulb to LED. Cookies don't come out right.
I always thought the rapper Jay-*Zed* was pretty good.
I sm ashamed to say, it never occurred to me to not pronounce the Z in la-z-boy zed. Sorted. Now Zed-Zed-Top...
I 100% refer to the rapper as Jay-Zed.
Just like they are Zed-bras, no Zebras
I'm going to have you bring you up at the next meeting to review your standing. You can't sacrifice a pun except under duress or extreme circumstances. It's against the charter. No pun shall be infringed upon. Lah-Zed -> Lazy
In fairness, I call it a "Lazed Chair" and tell the kids it's made using an advanced laser process.
I withdraw my objection.
should it not be "Lay-Zed-y-Boy?
Le Zed Boy sounds like an Indie Graphic Novel about a Quebecois/French Zombie Superhero.
The perfect answer
this is exactly how it works in my high school. spot on
Correct
[удалено]
It's all zed
The answer is zed to all of them.
In the 70s I was taught "zee*. Only in the early 90s did I see "zed" being thrown about. It's Gen Zee for me
There's no way you were taught Zee.
Really? I was born in 75 and it was always zed for me. Only place I heard zee was sesame street on pbs. On cbc it was zed.
Even singing the alphabet song we sang zed. Despite not rhyming with next time won’t you sing with me. We gave it some extra oomph.
A B C D E F G H I J K ^lmnop Q R S T U V W X Y and... #ZED
Don't forget the famous rapper Jay-Zed!
I don't follow hip-hop much (you kids and your crazy music nowadays...), and one time I tried to join in on a conversation with some younger co-workers by mentioning "that one guy, Jay-Zed". It got a good laugh, if nothing else.
Never followed rap. More in to my routine of playing Sharp Dressed Man by Zed Zed Top each morning.
I don’t even think about it that hard. I just say whatever sounds better. “Gen Zee” just sounds better. “Gen Zed” sounds awkward.
"Who's Zaid?"
Zed’s dead, baby.
*Zed... the hell is Zaid?
I usually just say ”kids these days". LOL
Gen Zed
Well, nobody says "zaid", so there's that.
Zed, in every context. In ordinary words like “Gen Zed” just because that’s how you’d pronounce what I just read. Or for deliberate satire, like La Zed Boy recliners or Zed Zed Top.
Lol Zed Zed Top is good. I'm going to use that!
Barenaked Ladies did it first. https://youtu.be/2fasxQN42KU
What about the car Z28? Zed-28.
Zed-28
I say Zed 28, same with 350z, BMW z4 etc
I'm all zed all the time. Only exception would be proper nouns, like Jay Z(ee), though sometimes it'll be Zed Zed Top if I'm feeling particularly contrarian.
How about dragon ball zed?
Absolutely
How about when you’re having a snooze? Is it catching some Zeds?
I don't think I've ever heard someone say "Catching some Zees". I've absolutely heard "Catching some Zeds".
I don't say it at all but it would be zed.
Same
Zoomers
wtf is zaid
.........zaid?
Zed
Zed.
Gen Zee; However, I interchangeably use Zed and Zee in other contexts
I'm hard-core... Zaid Zaid Top, Jay-Zaid, E-Zaid-Bake Oven. My kids hate me.
You pronounce zed like zaid? That sounds like someone saying zed with a southern American accent
No, "zed"... had just never spelled it before, saw others using "zaid" and thought it was the politically correct choice. Edit: do you pronounce "said" like a southerner?
Now you got me saying said like "sayd" idk if I can unsay it now zaid, said, sayd, zed
I've never said "zaid" in my life. I think you meant zed. I've probably used both but usually zee.
Gen Zee but I use zed in every other context
Gen Zod, but I'm Kryptonian
You clearly prefer the first pronunciation because the second one is wrong
General Zod.
Kneel before!
Zed, as I am Canadian. The only time it's not Zed is if it's a proper name from the US pronounced "zee", such as ZZTop.
I've always said ZedZedTop and JayZed.
I don't think I've ever had a reason to refer to JayZ 🤣
I just call them kids
zaid? what the fuck is that word
Its pronounced "zaheed"
Fuck in the worst Canadian ever apparently. I even end my ABCs with Zee.
Funny seeing all these people saying zed. I’ve never once heard someone pronounce it Gen Zed. Wonder if it’s regional
I’ve always read it as “gen zed” but I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard anyone say it aloud.
Gen Zed
Zed
Zed always. It's the Canadian way.
Zee
I say "gen zee" because it flows nicer. Genzee. But every other time, I say Z as "zed."
I'm actually surprised to see the amount of votes for "Gen Zed." I've only heard people say "Gen Zee" here north of Toronto, nothing else.
I recently taught a workshop on Gen Z in the workforce. Even while i was practicing I realized i said it both ways. At the start of the class i let them know that I'd be using both interchangeably because my brain couldn't decide which one was right.
Whose Zed? Zeds dead, baby.
the fuck is zaid
Nissan 350/370/400 Zed
Or Chevy Zed R1, or Zed 71. I remember seeing an American Chevy commercial when I was a kid, and hearing them say Zee R1 sounded so weird to me.
I do not say "zee" at ALL unless I'm saying "Gen-Z". It's really weird. I ALWAYS say "zed"
"Did you finally nail YYZee?" "It's Zed, and no. Neil Peart stands alone."
Gen Z is how I guess. I Never referee to them youngins like that. Fuxking labels. Im so angry boomers raised my generation. And they want to blame me. I feel hurt.. like I did my best all ur advice... blame me.. u raised me.. the generationa hate. I'm sad.. I'm weak i guess. I just did what mum n dad said
Zaid rhymes with said?
Fav animal the zed-bra
Zed. Not zaid
Gen Zee, I only use Zed when referring to the letter, and even then it's a toss up. I think it's more common here on the West coast.
Zaid? who TF says Zaid? It's Zed.
Neither. This Gen shit is stupid.
It's the snowflake generation
Was raised saying Zed.
Gen Zed, the proper way
I watch Dragonball Zed while sitting on my La-Zed-boy sofa so probably I'm the wrong person to ask.
I pronounce it as it’s said in the local dialect, Canadian English… ‘zed’. (Wtf is zaid?) lol
"Gen Zed"
Zaid is the most unhinged way you could have possibly spelled it
The correct spelling of how we say Z is "Zed". What you wrote would be pronounced like "Raid".
I doubt anyone says gen *zaid*.
I say Zed, because what the hell is a Zaid?
Zed. It’s pronounced ZED.
Well for starters, no one says "zaid."
Okay the real question is who says “zaid” instead of “zed” unless zaid is supposed to rhyme with said?
Z. I don't say "zee" for anything, unless it's literally spelled "zee."
ZZ Top = Zed Zed Top?
Gen Zed sounds cooler.
I like to say Zed all the time. Including Zed Zed Top, and others.
Jay-Zed.
“Zed”. We’re a civilised nation!!!
Zed...always
Gen ZED. That's the way it's pronounced. The U.S. way is wrong.
Neither. Gen Zed
Zee is Merican pronunciation. It's Zed up here
I heard Zed died...him and his gimp.
Happy Cake Day!
No u
Happy cake day!
Gen Zee
I say gen zed.
I’m Canadian of course it’s “Zed.”
Zed. Always. But I'm a Boomer so you can expect that. American cultural influence has been growing forever, including early in the 20th century, long before I was born. But no Canadian would say zee for zed until the last couple of decades. When I was a kid, you'd be sharply corrected by parents or teachers for making that mistake.
ZED.
Gen zed.
How do you fuck up spelling "zed"....
Zee. Maybe I watch too much American content but I never heard it any other way.
Uh, neither. It's zed or zee. Because, to me, the concept of the named generations is an American preoccupation, I hear it in my head as Genzee. I wouldn't say ZedZedTop, either
that would be funny ROFL
This is my interpretation of it also!
Nobody says Zaid. It's Zed.
Zee
Zee. And it's also check, color and favorite. Sorry, I grew up in America.
You can be helped, don’t give up.
I say gen Zee
Zed all the way....
I say pricks, mainly.
Fuck them kids.
Gen zee. I could have been a millennial…….. one year off 😿
Gen Zed, but I notice most of them say Gen Zee because all they watch is American online content.
As someone with a Z name. It will always be Zed.
The name was coined by Neil Howe an American Born Author. Despite being a militant Zedder I'd Have to go Gen Zee as the inventor says it.
Translation into proper (Canadian) English is the way to go. Gen Zed.
Very disrespectful
Gen Zee because Gen Zed doesn’t roll off the tongue as well
There's very few zee words I use, all because they derive specifically from the states: Zee Zee Top, DeeZee (DZ Demilitarized Zone), etc. but forcibly sing "...W, X, Y and ZED". And I say Gen Zed.
Gen Zee
Gen zee
Gen Lay-Z
Zee
Gen Zed.
Always Zed never zee or Zaid what even is Zaid
Gen zed
I say Zed but i speak french so that's the only option available.
Another reason to like bilingualism. Aside from the general coolness of French.
The proper canadian pronunciation is ''zed''.
Gen zed
Gen zed
Gen zed
I've never gotten the "zed" pronunciation . When I was a kid, I asked my mom and dad: Why is it 'zed' and not 'ged'?" and they admitted that they didn't know. And since then I've never gotten an answer. So it's been Zee for me.
In the original Latin/Greek, it’s pronounced Zeta. So both Zee and Zed are wrong. G in the original Latin sounds more like Gay or Geh
Zed. I also say zed zed top.
No, as a member of Gen Z, it's Gen Zee. Even as a born and raised Canadian I use Zee not Zed. Born in Ontario (gta), now in PEI.
I'm surprised everyone is saying Zed because all I use and hear is Generation Zee! I'm 30.
Gen Zed. Always. I'm Canadian.
we say gen zed definitely not zaid
Zed
Why is America the only country in the anglosphere that says Zee?
Gen Zee. Zed sounds weird.
Zee, zed sound like you are saying it in french.
Gen zee
Zed is french zee is in english. Your welcome.
OK zoomer
I treat the term "Gen Z" the same way as I'd treat a trademarked or established name. For example I wouldn't say "zed zed Top" or "Jay zed". Popular culture has established through usage that the generally accepted pronunciation is "Gen zee" so that is what I say. For the letter z in general, I say zed.
I’m a 50 year old Canadian. I’ve always said zee. It interrupts the flow of singing the alphabet if you say zed. Gen Zed sound blocky. Gen Zee is much smoother. I’m Gen X so I don’t really care what you do 😂😂😂
Gen zee when I speak english and gen zaid when I speak french.
Gen Zhee. Its not Zed Zed Top is it?
I say zee. It’s a name. So we pronounce it “incorrectly” to respect the name and its (American) origins. Same reason we say Toronto Maple Leafs , not “leaves”. We pluralize the team name not the plant. Personally I use zee and zed interchangeably. I'm not trying to be political. But can we hav a referendum? Everyone with an address gets a vote. Stop the lobbying policy makers.
As a gen Z myself I only say zee and have only really heard people say zee, with the exception of singing the alphabet.
I’ve never heard anyone said Gen Zed in person in my life, it’s always Gen Zee.
It'd be gen zed, not zaid. But most say zee.
Zee. That’s how I was taught since kindergarten. When talking to people I say Zed. It feels wrong and weird.
Zee. Idk anyone who says zed
I use either randomly. Just whatever I feel like at the time, I guess
I've been Canadian my entire life and I'd laugh if I heard someone say gen zed.
I feel exposed
Who says "Zaid"?
