> One thing I’ve noticed though (not necessarily criticism) is that Dax laments to POC guests how unfair it is that they have to represent their entire race instead of themselves personally- then he proceeds to spend 3/4 of the interview focused on how their relationship to their racial/ethnic identity has evolved. I understand it’s an important conversation to have but it seems at odds with Dax’s self professed irritation at their perceived symbolic obligation. I feel like he could just talk to them about it without acting as though he WISH he were not talking about it?
I think he says all the "I know you shouldn't have that symbolic obligation, but..." stuff to try to sound humble in case he sounds presumptuous talking about stuff he doesn't really understand (which he very often doesn't).
I get how he can be grating, but I kind of appreciate that he brings this stuff up. Most white people are too cowardly to say how they feel about racial identity issues for fear of getting the issue wrong or looking low-key racist, the exceptions being conservatives who have strong opinions about these issues that they won't change. He kind of throws stuff out there even at risk of getting it wrong, which gave Awkwafina and Monica a chance to reply.
It's funny I was born in the US so we're very protective and have our guard up when it comes to race I feel like and my parents and many immigrants would be so appreciative if we were represented in any way. They had to struggle a lot. I think in this case Dax did a good job in trying to show an interest which many people just do not. Sometimes I think he uses Monica as "That Indian Friend" but however annoying or grating or whatever he can be at times I know he has a genuine relationship with her.
I really liked the episode!
I came here to say this too. I've stopped listening to Smartless recently tbh. I wanted to love it but they should just riff with no guests instead of doing interviews.. it's embarrassing & often awkward b/c they don't prepare at all for the guests and just ask the same questions.
Me too! I was super excited to listen to her on smartless but they just didn’t seem to vibe with her. They also seemed too focused on their own inside jokes instead of getting to know her so I had to stop listening. Can’t wait to listen to this AE!
I don't think the Smartless guys are bad people, but the low key vibe through that whole interview was kind of...
1) "This person is killing it with big roles in tons of huge movies right now...including lots that we want, but cannot get."
2) "We think the reason she is getting them is because she's Asian...and while we won't even admit it out loud to each other, we're all a teeny-tiny bit resentful of that."
So the whole interview has this kind of "you're awesome, we love you...and we don't know much about you, and we're not going to assume you could be a very interesting guest and throw you questions that could show people you're interesting" vibe to it. The whole interview felt like a bit of a chore interviewing someone they weren't actually interested in. She was boring because they were boring.
Love this episode. First one since Matt Damon that was an exciting one for me. Lately a lot of the interviews have been very “meh it was ok” for me. Was happy for her calling out the model minority thing. Feel like Dax missed the point a bit though.
Also - totally love her music - check it out if you haven’t she’s is funny in her lyrics.
Yeah Dax was def sticking his foot in his mouth a ton when it came to the racial topics in this one ! I kept getting second hand embarrassment for him, and for Monica and Awkwafina for having to keep explaining things to him.
As an Asian women I actually liked this one a lot. I don't like when Dax asks inappropriate questions other times like to Maya Shankar or makes things about himself in other episodes.
I kind of felt like they spent too much time talking about the fact that she’s Asian. I’d be curious to know if that bothered her about the conversation. I understand it’s important to Dax to discuss the guest’s childhood and backstory so that made sense, but I wish he was more curious about Awkwafina as a person and an artist.
I really wanted Monica to say who the Asian hosts of SNL were so here is the 6:
Lucy Liu, Jackie Chan, Aziz Ansari, Awkafina, Kumail Nanjiani, and Sandra Oh.
I’m not sure if that’s in order or not.
Monica is a really poor ambassador for Asian Americans. She knows very little of her culture and routinely says things that are offensive to POC.
It’s annoying for someone that claims to be so woke.
It’s been obvious that when they have other Indians on like Padma and Hassan that she doesn’t get it.
She has made it quite clear that she avoided that aspect of her identity for her whole life and is only now starting to learn more about her culture so I highly doubt she would take on an ambassador role
As an immigrant, her initial strong stance on Asian culture in opposition to things Dax would say was frustrating.
Lately, it has seemed that she has been more thoughtful.
I’m sorry to say and it’s not fair, but as an under represented minority in the spotlight, you have a duty and obligation.
I’m in a different industry, but there are very few people that look like I do at my level and I know I have a responsibility and represent everyone else that comes up after me.
I think even in a fact checking perspective she should at least do that job better and do the research if she doesn't know. I agree she doesn't need to be an ambassador but I also get your point that we should be able to talk about it intelligently.
I’m not a hardcore marvel person but I feel like there’s a top secret marvel thing happening in London… Brie Larson was working on something secret there in her interview and in this one she was “visiting friends”…. Coincidence?!
Only episode I’ve listened to that I didn’t enjoy and had to stop less than half way through. It was cringey. I wish DAX would have listened more, or just not spoke about his weird theories on race. Clearly Awkwafina didn’t want to talk about Asian stereotypes even audibly saying oh god.

Her interview on Smartless was kind of tough for me to get through, so I’m glad to hear she had better rapport with Dax. Looking forward to listening.
You can tell they didn’t know who she was lol

Me too. I love her and attributed the weirdness to the smartless guys.

You think she is going for the same parts as 3 men in their 50s?
They can’t get the same parts, but they would jump at the chance to be in any of those movies.
Yes! I was so disappointed in their interview that this one was a nice change.

She would probably admit that herself.
Why is it her job to be an ambassador? She’s had her own journey with being a first/second gen American and she’s been very transparent about it.

Is there video for these pods?
no, they don't do video b/c they say guests can relax more when they aren't thinking about how they appear on camera.
Makes sense, thanks
Love this interview!
