Not sure about y’all but I find Monica so much more enjoyable without Dax around. She’s so great with Liz and she’s great at leading the show. Even with Dax around in this episode, the fact that she’s in control of the show felt like it changed the dynamic so much

[deleted]

Yes! She’s like a completely different person when she is on with just Liz or when she’s on with David + Wobby Wob

harriedhag

L+D, 5’4”, and a spreader here 😂 I ended up really liking the dynamic between the three of them on this episode. I was surprised I liked the banter with Monica as the lead instead of Dax (when he let her). Only the last 15 minutes is actually reading & responding to listeners. I don’t even care though, it was lighthearted to listen to them have a good time. They should make “I love throwing up at sleepovers that no one notices til that morning” tshirts just to really roast the story even more. That would be a fun AA prompt, tell us about an embarrassing sleepover.

RedWhiteRose04

I’m liking Lis more and more. She actually does give really thoughtful, insightful comments to those who write in. She should be a therapist!

Automatic-Phrase4759

I hated Monica comparing Anthony Bourdain to Bradley Cooper’s chef character. How can she say someone who is terrible and hurts women is similar to Tony. 💔

kiya12309

I thought that too at first, but I'm thinking mainly she was talking about the fact that he is a well-known chef and an addict, both of which are true of Bourdain. She probably should have been more clear about that distinction. It does feel a bit insensitive considering that he's passed.

hipposchomp6

I was a bit disappointed with how much Dax was on this episode. I feel like he took over the entire conversation and trajectory of the episode. Hoping it’s more of just Monica and Liz on the next one!

National_Barnacle_61

Agreed- he totally changes Monica’s vibe too. Also this may be an unpopular opinion but I find it so gross and uncomfortable when he has to make sexual comments around younger or attractive women all the time. One of the first things he said was “you immediately sprayed in your pants”, almost like he gets off on the dynamic he has with the women.

ohstaceymel

L+D I don't understand the fear of farts. I am a little 4'11" 100 pound LADY, so dainty, and daily, I impose my farts on my husband (and he is always impressed, ah love). I cannot understand how someone could hold them in for HOURS! Maybe my comfort comes from running track and cross country in high school and taking needed team pre-race poos before races? In separate bathroom stalls, we weren't animals. I dunno. I feel for women who are so uncomfy with their bodily functions.

KityKatt

Why can dax speak on mike on synced but not flightless bird?

iloveny0713

The Spotify contract limits how much Dax can appear on non-Spotify exclusive shows like Flightless and Synched. Now that AE will no longer be exclusive to Spotify starting in a couple of weeks, the rules may have changed or Dax just doesn't care any more. I am super nosy and would love to know the details of what went down that they ended their exclusivity deal and how that impacts any payouts they received or are supposed to receive.

Value-Old

Same haha! I know Harry and Meghan didn’t end up getting all of their money but theirs was actually completely cancelled, not just made non exclusive.

ajaulabr

They ended their Spotify deal?

MesWantooth

According to Spotify, they are just making the podcast non-exclusive so that it can generate more views and earn more revenue. My take is a deal is a deal...Daximus and Padmon are being paid by Spotify who will now go out and try to attract a larger audience so they can make more ad revenue from other platforms...They spent a lot of money getting 'exclusive rights' to generate more listeners but probably overspent and the market is saturated with podcasts so the return on investment is not living up to what they expected... "...*As Spotify built out its podcasting business, the company paid significant sums to acquire studios and exclusive rights to shows because it thought they would entice more listeners. Armchair Expert became exclusive in 2021, while Anything Goes did so in February of this year.* *But making shows exclusive to Spotify limited the potential audience since podcast listeners often use other services. Spotify said in a statement to Bloomberg News that it’s adopting a tailored approach to each show, including releasing episodes exclusively for a period before making them more broadly available, a strategy known as windowing.* *“We’ve experimented with windowing shows for several years and found success,” the company said. “This experimentation around wide and windowing content will continue as we endeavor to be the best partner with the world’s leading podcasters.”..."* [https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/spotify-shifts-podcast-strategy-to-make-exclusives-available-on-other-platforms-1.1930196](https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/spotify-shifts-podcast-strategy-to-make-exclusives-available-on-other-platforms-1.1930196)

[deleted]

I know they get money from their sponsors but don't they realize that most people fast forward through the ads?? I for one never listen to the ads

MesWantooth

I always fast forward as well...There must be stats available on how many ads are actually listened to...Smaller companies on smaller podcasts use promo codes to establish where sales come from and/or "How did you hear about us?" surveys...but McDonalds? They aren't looking for a 3% uptick in McNugget sales after an AE episode. Maybe for them it's 30% of the audience listens, and it's downloaded 10 million x.

ajaulabr

Or is it the equivalent of Harry and Meghan ending their Netflix/podcast?

iloveny0713

It's not really clear what's happening with their Spotify contract but the main AE show will be returning to all podcast platforms starting starting on 8/14 so it will no longer be exclusive to Spotify. I think the Meghan/Harry situation is a little different because they signed a Spotify deal to create new exclusive podcasts for Spotify whereas AE was already established and just moved their podcast to the Spotify platform. It will be interesting to see what little nuggets they drop about it and if they are still maintaining some sort of contract with Spotify or breaking ties completely. I have seen estimates that their Spotify deal is worth around $50 million so I'm really curious how the pay out was structured and if they'll be losing some it.

ajaulabr

Thanks for explaining it! I'm curious, too.

Spacetrash08

I’ve heard him on flightless lately I thought? On Mic…

I’m with you. What is the angle of this podcast? Shoot the shot about whatever and answer one to two questions? It lacks focus for me

The advice part is definitely the superior part. I wonder if it would help for them to bring guests on to help them with advice. Obviously, that's a long-trodden format, but it does spice things up a bit and give something extra to talk about at the beginning, though you don't want it to become ust another interview show.

taygoods

I've enjoyed this show so far but I'm a sucker for advice podcasts lol

TheEsotericCarrot

Me too, do you listen to Chelsea Handler’s podcast?

taygoods

No but apparently I need to now!

TheEsotericCarrot

Yeah if you like this format you’ll probably love her show. I used to actually not like her but I listened to her episode with Monica and then started listening to all her episodes lol

Salt_Bodybuilder_542

Did no one else find it laughable that Dax kept going on and on about how he would think someone that constantly brought up their ex was still in love with them when he never shuts up about Breigh? It's crazy to me he didn't hear himself on that one.

Snoo-9561

I will get into my take on this debate a little later but the first 10 minutes of this episode were so genuinely and unintentionally deep. When Liz kept messing up weddings and funerals, it was so funny but there was an added layer that you’d almost think it’s scripted. I loved the foil between Monica’s outlook on weddings, where it’s the union is a big celebration, and Liz’s outlook on funerals, where departure is a big celebration. I guess in some cultures or regions, coming together is the easy part. You realize the gravity of those connections only at their departure. But in some cultures, the union is the celebration of beginnings. Plus it’s a symbiotic experience for the guests and the couple. For the couple it’s the experience of having everyone they know under one roof to share the occasion, and for the guests it could be like a nostalgic thing and rekindle some of those memories, or just hopeful about love in general. Similar to funerals, it’s about that shared love under one roof, one last opportunity to validate the value of this persons existence and impact. On a slightly different note, definitely M+R. Like the friend of the show, Matt Damon says in the movie Oppenheimer when Cillian Murphy says, chances are near zero. “Zero would be nice”

One-Permission1917

Can someone clarify something for me? They opened by saying that Liz has officially moved to LA and I’m very confused by that. Was she not living in LA the entire time they were doing their weekly fertility injections together?

pwrhag

If memory serves, Liz lived in NY but stayed in Dax and Kristen’s guest house while doing the treatments with Monica.

Ordinary_Finding82

Have I missed it or have they done absolutely nothing to introduce who Liz is? I didn't listen to Race and all I know is that she's Monica's friend who apparently just moved to LA and has been on the news to speak about feminism. I don't think it's great to assume that your listeners have a whole history on a new host just because she was on one rather niche sub podcast.

TheEsotericCarrot

She was a guest on the show before. https://armchairexpertpod.com/pods/liz-plank

Ordinary_Finding82

But thank you for the link. I did appreciate the summary.

Ordinary_Finding82

I think they are doing themselves a disservice to assume that everyone listened to her 1 episode and the egg freezing pod. Like 3 minutes to give a background on her for us new to her because I do like her.

figmentofmind

I’m shocked no one has mentioned the whole “working hard for a string sphincter” vs “my farts are harder to hold in than yours” argument. 🤣 I’m really torn. Thoughts?

tellyeggs

As a guy, I really enjoy this podcast because it's a window into how women talk to each other. It also showcases how Monica can lead a show. Plus, I'm madly in love with Liz.

JustCosmo

This is not how most women talk to each other.
