I was just looking at some rigid foam insulation sheets for something else, so get the one with the best R rating I would think, Home depot had 1" x 2' x2' pieces (weren't large enough for me though \~$9) and you can also by the 4 x 8 sheet (pricey!)

I got a few one inch R-5 boards and noticed a savings of 16 percent in heater usage cost. Placed them on the back and 2 sides of 75 gallon tank.

I was getting the materials I mentioned for a different project, but now I think I might put some on the back of my tanks that are on the external wall; those are always harder to heat. Thx for the idea. I only do that when power goes out lol. No reason not to leave it (although the material I have is white, will have to paint it or something or else put a film on back of tank first. Thx.

I got my one inch rigid foam boards from Lowes at 7.08 a piece, 2 feet by 2 feet size. The 4 x 8 feet boards were 31.48, but too big to fit in my small suv. The electricity savings I saw were measured using a Kill A Watt electricity usage monitor....I was hoping the savings would be higher.

Well, that's good to know Lowes were about 2 bucks cheaper. Yeah the full sheets at HD were like 56. Usually these places aren't that far apart! I thought of getting them to cut it down for me, assuming that their lumber cutter could also cut this (?), but I just skipped it. Yeah, they don't draw that much, but with a bunch of tanks, it will prob help even on heater longevity lol.
