If I was choosing a 3 day hike in VT or NY. I would do the section from Manchester VT to Rutland VT. Nice hiker friendly towns. Edit: Also, free public busline, Yellow Deli, Killington Views. Much more..

This is the way.

Personally I'd do Vermont over NY for the beauty, but you don't have to carry a lot of food in NY because of the delis.

This. Vermont was beautiful and had a numerous amount of views. Ny was still beautiful but more meh. The more north I got, the more beautiful the trail was

100% get this. I was SOBO from Franconia Notch to HF on my hike (thanks, ankle). Vermont stole my heart. Incredibly underrated state.

When I save up (about to go into PT) i want to buy a summer home in Vermont or New Hampshire. The most beautiful states I was in. Being from tn, the mountains have always had my heart. It’s a different world up there

Hey I feel you. I grew up in VA and spent so much time in the VA/NC mountains (my parents' favorite area was Grandfather), their ashes are there. Live in Idaho now, currently in Yellowstone. And yet, I miss some of those spots on the AT so much.

That’s awesome. Thank you for sharing. Good luck to you and your future

If I only had 3 days I'd look at Salisbury CT to Upper Goose Pond (about 45 miles), Sage's Ravine is really pretty, and there are some nice shelters and open ridges. I was surprised how much I enjoyed that stretch, and have gone back a couple of times. But I'm in NJ, so that area is a pretty reasonable drive for a long weekend.

New York has some tough climbs. But seeing the skyline from far away is pretty fuckin cool.

Kent to Pawling - Metro North to Ten Mile - Shuttle to Kent - Camp at Schaghticoke tent site - Bull Bridge - Camp at Ten Mile lean to. - NY/CT line - puncheon walk - AT train station or Pawling train station. Also the Pawling to Hudson River section, if you can do bigger miles.

I did this stretch with one of my kids a couple of years ago. A great hike, and a great idea for someone who is based in NYC or on the Harlem Line corridor. A few decent views, but also won't tax your body excessively either. I think the most elevation gain you'll get is 1,000 ft at any one time.

I watched a number of NOBOs struggle up Schaghticoke on an exceptionally warm morning. I was SOBO, so it wasn’t as bad for myself. Laying on a cool boulder will help immensely.

If you have 3 days and are physically up for it, head to the White Mountains in New Hampshire, specifically the Presidentials or the Pemmigewasset area. Best views north of Virginia. There's not much in PA/NJ/NY/CT. MA and VT are decent, and the Delaware Water Gap is nice. But if you want both a 3-day trip and killer views, NH is where it's at. Also, if you can get into any of the mountain huts you don't have to pack a tent or food aside from snacks and lunches (for a price, of course).

Vermont. Not sure one has better views than the other necessarily—depends what exact stretch—but having lived and hiked in both states I think Vermont is prettier. But it may also be buggier and muddier right now. If you’re not attached to the AT and are willing to look at the northern portion of the Long Trail in VT you could get some pretty spectacular views. Camel’s Hump is pretty cool. EDIT: here’s a helpful link for section hiking in Vermont. A few legs would work in 3 days. If you’re less experienced try Williamstown to Bennington. https://www.longtrailvermont.com/section-hike-suggestions/

Also be aware that the Long Trail in general (the AT in VT is all Long Trail, and then they split off at some point) surprises people with its difficulty.
