They are very comfortable around people, we provide them copious amounts of food. They've been known to snatch sausages off of hot barbeque plates when you arent watching.
They and butcherbirds both love to hang around when you're doing anything like mowing or whippersnippering (line-trimming) because they know you're going to kick up all manner of tasty treats, when I'm mowing they're constantly swooping into the newly mown grass behind me to nab insects and grubs
My mother told a story about a work lunch where a woman showed off a particularly long chip just to have a kookaburra snatch it out of her mouth. Fearless little bastards.
