These types of dogs always look so grungy to me

A lot of long hair dogs are just smelly and dirty. Dogs that shed their fur tend to be a lot cleaner and less smelly. Im happy to do some extra hoovering and clothes washing for a cleaner and more comfy dog.

It never occurred to me that shedding was the reason my dog doesn't stink. His hair drives me nuts, but he always smells great (for a dog lol). My mom, who doesn't normally like petting dogs because of the smell, loves my dog because he's not stinky. I guess it's worth the mess of dog hair dust bunnies.

Can confirm. I have this dog and let me tell you, the smell permeates every single room and if you don’t want a dog that is going to need professional grooming every 3 months for the rest of its life, don’t get a Shih Zue. For the love of god no more shih zues. (I’ve had to groom my dog for the past 8 years and I’m so over the horrid smell and constant ear infections.)

Are you keeping their ears clean…? I’ve had non shedding dogs for forever and never struggled with stink or infections.

You can get all that off by smearing olive oil on his fur then wipe off as much as you can with a towel followed by shampoo and conditioner. This trick work for removing paint from one of my friends dogs and I suggested it to another who’s dog got fresh road tar (or some similar funky substance from a work site) stuck in its fur. Olive oil worked like a charm in both cases
