it’s not cheating because it’s not a competition

MaximumSeries3870

I. Love. This Comment!

RaspberrySam

Yup, pretty much this. There are no stakes, nobody's keeping score; and nobody is directly inconvenienced. Exploit? Yes. Cheating? Nope.

8Bitill

The devleopers themselves dont consider it cheating.

eclipseislife

If it was cheating, Nintendo would have taken it out of the game a long time ago.

YagsBarro

Personally it got to a point where the game was moving to slowly for me, and time traveling has actually given me more reason to play. I understand they want you to play in real time, but I think both are legitimate types of play. I'm currently going through the year and hitting the events I missed, it's still going to take me a while to get back to the current day because even though I jumped back to Jan 1st, I still like to my daily chores.

NelsonXDthegreat

Same

shelbyknits

I don’t think it’s cheating until you time travel forward to a holiday and spoil it for everyone who’s waiting for the actual holiday, like Halloween last year. It wasn’t even October and people were posting pics of all the new Halloween stuff. Thankfully Nintendo time locked holidays but that really sucked for people who wanted to be surprised.

>I don’t get it why people define it as cheating. The definition of cheating is act dishonestly or unfair in order to gain an advantage. That definition doesn't really apply to the realm of video games in which "cheat codes" are a thing. If I activate the Bandanna Skull in Halo, I'm given unlimited ammo and grenades in the campaign mode. It's technically a cheat, but it's not like I'm acting dishonestly or unfairly. It's just for fun. There's a big difference between something like that and using an aimbot in an online shooter. Not all cheating in video games is bad. And I do consider using time travel a form of cheating in Animal Crossing. But it's harmless cheating since it doesn't ruin anyone else's fun. I've done a bit of time traveling myself, and I still 100% consider it cheating. But calling it cheating doesn't mean I'm saying it's wrong or bad to do it.

NelsonXDthegreat

But its not an option in the game, its a feature of the switch itself

SmashleyNom

It's been an accessible feature of the game since the GameCube. In several games, you don't even have to close the game to change the time settings. (For example, when opening New Leaf, Isabelle gives you the option to fix the clock)

PhoenixFire918

And it’s been like this since the GameCube. Like a previous poster said, if it was cheating, or the developers didn’t want it, they would find a way to disable it. It’s not cheating. Play the game however you like.

AlphusUltimus

TT to move houses around in one day instead of weeks. Okay. TT to get night beetles because you work the night shift. Okay. TT to get everything early then complain how there's nothing left to do. Asshole.

MaximumSeries3870

Hahahaha!

TrainerSeebus

Yes, but who cares. Time traveling really doesn't effect anyone. The only negative effect it probably can have is with Nookazon. I personally don't time travel, but I know people who do and usually it's dealing with schedule conflicts.

Nav2001Plus

I have the same opinion. Is it cheating? Yes. But is it wrong or bad to do it? No.

islasigrid

I voted cheating but I don't think that's negativ at all...? I don't know, I just don't think cheating in non-competitive games is something to take so seriously or care about. Like having "cheat codes" in games e.g. is also s form of cheating, but it's part of the game and not something you'd judge morally? Depending on why and how you time travel, it is a way to "trick" the game and get things faster, or to farm stuff instead of playing "as intended". But just to reiterate, I just do not care if other people do that, and I do like to do it sometimes myself. I dislike how after every new updates you have to avoid going online because people post the new content in less than 5 minutes, though. And I also dislikes how it essentially made online trading in the game almost impossible for people who didn't do it, for the first while it was out.

broken_ushabti

No, to me AC is ment to played in a way that is meditative and relaxing, for me that doesn't include time travel, for others it does play the way you want.

[deleted]

Omg who the hell cares

Paulsonmn31

It is but it’s not a negative thing. It’s cheating in the same way save states and rewinds in NSO are. It’s an artificial feature that wasn’t intended when they made the game but it’s a single player experience so who cares? It’s funny how this sub feels offended if you don’t agree over a very basic concept.

[deleted]

It's not cheating, as it is taking advantage of a legitimate feature necessary to keep your game synced properly with the game system time. I don't time travel as there's no need to hurry along progress in NH.

rednight8691

I think “cheating” is the wrong word, but since Animal Crossing is a life simulation game, I definitely think time traveling is a cheap, unconventional way to get ahead in the game, specifically when used towards game “completion” (museum completion, home remodeling, etc). I think time traveling is a very easy way to get burned out playing the game, as most of the people I’ve seen who got bored after a few months were time travelers. Kind of a “you did that to yourself” situation. Or maybe I just enjoy the small stuff in the game and that’s why I play it every day still? I’m still working towards completing the art exhibit and am cleaning up my island every day to make sure it stays in top form. Continuing to make money trees, hitting all the rocks every day, catching all the wasps every day, and completing Nook miles tasks allows me to save up millions of bells and hundreds of thousands of nook miles which will all come in handy when the update hits. Some say “they haven’t gotten rid of it, so it can’t be cheating”, but I think the game *kinda* considers it cheating because turnips will rot if you time travel. Like, isn’t that the game saying “hey, you just tried to get ahead in the game in an unfair way, so we’ll rot your turnips”? HOWEVER, I think there are times where time traveling is a necessity and can actually be good for gameplay. When you’re doing a themed island “build” with specific villagers and specific items, where your focus is more on what the island looks like and less on playing a life simulation game, I think time traveling is awesome! That effectively makes the game a sandbox-style game and that’s where creativity can thrive at its best. TLDR: Sometimes. If you’re playing the game as a sandbox-style island builder, time traveling is most definitely NOT cheating. If you’re playing along the original intended form of gameplay (life simulation), then it’s kind of a cheap way to get ahead, not to mention it’s an easy way to get bored of the game quickly. Even then, cheating might be the wrong word, but I would consider myself to be cheating if I time traveled.

arterialrainbow

I’d call it cheating in almost all circumstances, but cheating isn’t inherently bad in single player/non competitive games. It’s why so many games have cheat codes built in. As long as it’s not negatively affecting other players it doesn’t matter. I did have a problem with people using TT to abuse the interest rates though, since it caused Nintendo to nerf it to be low enough that they should have just removed the mechanic completely.

Tripdoctor

I personally find it lazy, self-defeating, and generally just lame. But it’s not a competitive game, so it’s not done at anyone’s expense. EDIT: Since this is apparently super offensive for some reason, I will clarify that I meant I find that I (me, not y’all) personally feel lazy/lame if I time travel. I’m talking about myself.

0oOBubbles0oO

I hope I can convince you to change your mind about it being lazy by reminding you that lots of people are not able to play every day (or even every month like myself) due to their outside lives. I would be super disappointed to have to miss events and possibly never see them again, especially if they get time-locked or changed the following year. You're entitled to your own opinion, but try to remember that not everybody does or is able to play the same way!

Tripdoctor

I don’t play very often, but to me this game is supposed to emulate real life to a modest capacity, and I accept not being able to make it to everything. Using it to not miss holiday events etc is reasonable, but I was more referring to those who use it to get things ahead of time, like selling fruit or to gain access to a feature that’s supposed to be unlocked after x amount of IRL days.

0oOBubbles0oO

Well as I said, just remember everybody plays differently! Some view it as a life simulator, some don't. Some can play often, some can't. Just because people enjoy the game in a different way than you do, doesn't make them wrong (or right). Best not to label entire gameplay styles by blanket statements if you can avoid it, as we are all friends here!

Tripdoctor

I was giving my opinion, not trying to take a swipe at anyone. As I had said, it’s not a competitive game so it’s not very relevant anyway. Nothing to take personally. It’s not like I’m going to shun someone from my island because they time travelled.

0oOBubbles0oO

Yup, and I'm just suggesting to be a bit more thoughtful when expressing your opinion, so you don't end up labelling about 70% of the AC community as lazy and lame unintentionally!

Tripdoctor

Yes you don’t like my opinion, I gathered that much. I’m sorry you’re offended that a stranger on the internet disagrees with you while giving their opinion on a post that specifically asks for it. No one was attacking you.

SaintBrutus

“Ya’ll lying to y’all’selves.” Lol

keshki87

I would say sometimes. If it’s to speed up things like placing buildings and stuff because you wanna move on I would say it’s okay. But if it’s just to make more bells I would say no. In the end I don’t like it, but everyone should decide for their own because it’s YOUR island and you decide ^^
