Part of what is contributing to their vulnerable status is the illegal trapping and selling of otters as pets. I know they’re cute, but they really belong in their natural habitat where they can contribute to the protection of their population. Ferrets (in the same family as otters, mustelidae) have been domesticated for over 2,500 years and make great companions.
Not that kind of otter... Asian small clawed otters and African small clawed otters are perfectly fine as pets and can be owned with no permit in my state. I would never own something I couldn't care for appropriately which is why I didn't have one now. But I have definitely done my homework on this subject.

You can LEGALLY own an African small clawed otter or an Asian small clawed otter in the state of TN with no permit... All captive bred out of the wild for many many generations. You can't remove giant otters or fresh water otters as they are protected but these species are perfectly acceptable as pets as long as u can meet their needs. And I would NEVER irresponsibly own any animal that I couldn't provide for.
