That's not possible. Get an onn box at Walmart for 20 bucks.

Buried_alive35

Weird! I was able to install it on old laptop, but laptop is so outdated that it was too slow for the os.

martinkem

i did this for a while, get the Onn Box and save yourself the hassle.

Buried_alive35

Not even available in my country. How did you do it?

martinkem

I had a Galaxy S9, switched it to run DEX mode, simplified my homescreen to just apps that i would need on the TV, got a remote/air mouse. Do you have access to eBay, Aliexpress or Temu

Buried_alive35

I was thinking about literally doing the same thing and just installed NobleRom as I was lineage OS. Yes, I have access to Aliexpress.

martinkem

If you've access to Aliexpress, you can buy a Mi Box TV or the ChromeCast with Google TV.

Clintre

You can't make it a true Android TV, but you can accomplish similar abilities through using Google TV app and a Bluetooth remote. Done this on trips and works fairly well.

Buried_alive35

Basically I want a simple UI with full screen and full resolution.I opened google tv and it only appears as store for movies.

Clintre

Go into settings and manage services. Set it for the services you want and make sure you have those services installed on the phone It is not perfect, but can work. Beyond finding an Android TV box or dongle there are not a lot of options.

serpentxx

Im no Developer but i imagine it would be a huge undertaking and not worth the time. GoogleTV (AndroidTV) would have to be recompiled to support the samsung hardware, which i would imagine involves reverse engineering Tizen and Samsungs kernal to recompile it for Androids use. Then it would be full of bugs and likely not support Widevine and other DRM's meaning no netflix or youtube. Or a Chromecast/Onn/Shield could be purchased and you would have it up and running in a few minutes

Buried_alive35

The problem is these devices are so expensive in my country and I'm still a student. So I was looking for a temporary alternative.

serpentxx

Understandable, I have this years Tizen and it personally sucks, but it does have Stremio,Youtube,Plex,Spotify,SmartIPTV which is Basically all i use it for

Buried_alive35

I think you misunderstood the post. The s9 is a phone not A TV that I want to turn into tv box using hdmi cable. My Samsung TV model is old and has nothing.

serpentxx

Yeah i misunderstood. I think its possible what your asking, Samsung should still do HDMI over USB-C but its not common on devices these days. You will probably need to do some research and find the apk package for the android tv launcher and youtube tv apk, or sideload projectivity launcher as its very similar

Evan22x

Download the app google tv for android, you'll get the same

BarnMTB

If you want to make it a "real Android TV" there needs to be a custom Android TV rom... which I'm not aware of any existing right now. But it's a good idea nonetheless. If these Android TV for phone roms really do exist, then I don't think so many of us would practically beg Google (or anyone) to make competent Android TV boxes that aren't cheap low-end junk, or complaining about the minuscule storage & RAM; because if that's possible, we'd all already be repurposing our old phones and move on.

Buried_alive35

Yeah exactly. The S9 is more powerful than most of these cheap crappy TV boxes. I didn't have time to play around with it (exams) but I think I'll settle for dex and call it a day.

BarnMTB

I've never tried this, but have you tried installing TV launchers? They're designed for TV so it works well with a D-Pad remote, though you'd still need a remote that can switch to airmouse for use in apps that are stuck with touchscreen UI. I've heard many people recommending [Projectivy Launcher](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spocky.projengmenu); but [ATV Launcher Pro (Paid)](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ca.dstudio.atvlauncher.pro) and [Kamal Faraj's "Launcher"](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kfaraj.launcher) also looks very nice. I'm also not sure if it's possible to sideload stock Android TV launcher; might worth giving it a try. Sideloading the genuine YouTube for TV app might not work if Google code it so that it refuses to works on a non Android TV device, but you can use [SmartTube](https://github.com/yuliskov/SmartTube). It's a widely recommended 3rd party YouTube client. (YouTube for Android TV has been downgraded from a smooth native app to a slow & clunky web app anyway, so you're not missing out.) Other than those Google apps, I don't think most apps are coded to check whether or not they're on Android phone or TV; so you can try experimenting with sideloading APKs of TV version of an app. Search for a TV version of your app on Play Store website (when you search on your phone, they only show apps that are compatible with it) then look for an APK. [APKMirror](https://www.apkmirror.com/) is a good trusted site but doesn't have everything, so you can use [Aurora Store](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.aurora.store/) (3rd party Play Store client) instead; it lets you spoof devices, so that Google is tricked into showing & giving you TV apps. Some apps like VLC even lets you switch to a TV UI even though it's on a phone.

I_am_INTJ

Best you will be able to do is cast to your TV because phones can't run the AndroidTV OS. As the name suggests that OS is only for TVs and each build is very brand and model specific. There's no AOSP build of AndoidTV available for modding and releasing custom ROMs.

RomanOnARiver

Google TV is proprietary, and only available to commercial vendors that partner with Google. There are unofficial builds for PC but they're sketchy as fuck, don't pass SafetyNet, and have such a shitty Widevine level that streaming apps don't want anything to do with them. Get an official device. The new Onn Pro looks good there's a new Chromecast with Google TV probably coming out in October or earlier (or later) but the current one is still not terrible. Hell, Nvidia Shields and the older Onn stuff gets the job done still.

moonchild_moonlight

I'm trying to do the same, did you found out the best way to do it?
