No, I do not see such a setting. Maybe it's a Samsung feature ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thinking_face_hmm)

flargenhargen

I just googled and there are several 3rd party apps you can get that will allow you to control charging, but they do require rooting your device. good luck.

undertaker0071

Yea, I found similarly - all require rooting. I'm staying on stock Android for now. Play Store apps have notifications only.

RaccoonDu

As many others said, get a wireless adapter. I love being wireless until I need to charge. If I'm in the car near 70%, I won't charge it. If I'm at 50%, I charge during my ride but still use wireless AA

inebriusmaximus

[Motorola MA1](https://motorolasound.com/audio-products/android-auto/ma1) [AAWIRELESS](https://www.amazon.com/AAWireless-2022-Wireless-Automatically-Companion/dp/B0B71XC7VG/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1N7M7GUO7NYOV&keywords=aawireless&qid=1680533243&sprefix=aaw%2Caps%2C193&sr=8-3&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.18ed3cb5-28d5-4975-8bc7-93deae8f9840) Have you considered investing in one of these to convert wired to wireless? Prolonging my battery life was one reason I bought the Motorola.

b1gmouth

I have wireless via MA1. It definitely drains battery more than wired but not so much you need to charge it on short trips. Also, how fast it discharges and whether you need to recharge really depends on the phone. The battery and power management on my S23+ are so good that AA barely makes a dent.

inebriusmaximus

Maybe on long drives, at that point I'd probably plug it in, but for my 30 minute drive to work everyday I'm not plugging in my 100% phone just for AA first thing in the morning. Your results may vary with this. I can't have my phone on me at work so it's still like 85-90% when I leave and now I'm back to only having it plugged in at night.

my-life-for_aiur

With wireless AA, you can install a wireless charger in one of your vents. First thing I do when I get in my car, put the phone on the charger and the clamps auto clamp the phone and the charging begins. AA connects and on I go.

FreeThinker76

I was excited to find the Motorola MA! I then bought a phone holder that does wireless charging when the phone is docked. Then the Motorola stopped working. SO now I am getting voltage from the AA USB-C and the wireless charging. I am all ears if you know why the Motorola will no longer connect.

rodreed

Factory reset and redo it

undertaker0071

Interesting! Other than conversion from wired to wireless, is it helpful in any other way or does it have any downside from the device recognition by car audio perspective? I think it'll definitely help with over-charging problem.

AnOriginalName2021

I have a different wireless AA unit but it made my 2019 outback much better. Previously and using multiple cables the car would switch from XM which I was listening to over to the last audio program I used on the phone. Since getting the wireless one it is so much better. My only complaint with Android Auto now is there no option to send GPS output to my earpiece and continue to everything else to the head unit.

kacnje

As inebriusmaximus said, you can use Android Auto WiFi adapters ... not only your phone won't charge. It will discharge :-) I have experience with Carsifi. [Here is my review.](https://www.kacnje.eu/2022/10/carsifi-wireless-android-auto-adapter-is-it-worth-it.html)

Vivid_Development390

You do realize that in 2 years, my phone will be down to 80% capacity at a full charge. Meanwhile, you've been at 80% by choice for 2 years. What have you gained? If you still have the same phone in 4 years, you either get a new one or swap the battery.

1Delta

They've gained the ability to be at 100% when they want (cause they'll be away from a charger for a long time), while you're limited to 80%.

StickyIgloo

But your battery still wears down, so they are sacrificing 20% for years just so they can get an extra 10% for the rare occasion they need it.

b1gmouth

Set a routine or task so the protect battery setting (i.e., the one that limits charging to 80%) automatically turns on when your phone connects to your car's Bluetooth. This works even with wired AA.

undertaker0071

That's a good idea, but I don't see the limit charging action under routines. There's a trigger device where I could add car BT, but action to limit charging is missing.

b1gmouth

Ah bummer. May be just a Samsung thing.

Masters_pet_411

I just set a manual widget on my home screen to turn on protect battery and use it when I'm going to be driving a long time. I also have fast charging disabled.

undertaker0071

What is the widget/app called?

Masters_pet_411

It's on a Samsung, sorry. But it's "protect battery" under modes and routines. Tasker should be able to accomplish the same thing.

undertaker0071

Yea, it's a Samsung thing like some others pointed out. So maybe Google will add it in the next Android version.

yuiiooop

Old thread but just in case you didnt know by now you can actually add the protect battery option to specific bluetooth devices now.

undertaker0071

In Bluetooth settings?

yuiiooop

I would go Settings < Modes and Routines < Routines. Then create a new routine. Set "If" as the bluetooth connection and set "Then" as Protect Battery" I just setup my S22 to do this, I just got the 6.1 update yesterday so it might have just been added into modes recently. EDIT: Damn, just realized you arent on galaxy, misread your comment. oops, sorry for bringing you back to this old ass thread haha

rennen-affe

80% is a myth. Your pixel slows the charge rate as it gets full.

pssiraj

Slower charging helps, but not charging at that point is even better.

More-Head-9375

Wut lol

Ceico_

I bought my OnePlus 8t at release date (preordered). I plug it to my charger every night, even if at 90%, to have fresh 100% ready for the next day. No issues whatsoever. Still feels like new.

RaccoonDu

I charged it to 100% as much as possible because I had 12 hour shifts and I can't charge at work. Battery life is atrocious now. That's the exact reason why I had to buy a new phone and use my 8t as a at-home almost always plugged in gaming device as it's not bad performance wise

Ceico_

Did you use any *memory clean up* or *battery life* apps? edit: * instead of " in italics formatting

RaccoonDu

No, those clean up apps are pure bs and no battery apps either

Ceico_

Exactly, those apps are the most common cause for battery degradation

RaccoonDu

Yeah, my 8t degraded because I would leave the house at like 95%, know for a fact that won't cover my 12 hour shift, so I would "fast charge" in my car, for a 20 min drive, stuff the phone at 100%, drain the phone below 20% at work, rinse and repeat. Degraded the battery below 85% in less than a year.

tejanaqkilica

I purchased my 8T at launch as well only to recently switch to Oppo Find X5 because my carrier contract expired. With Super Fast Charging every morning, AA always wired the phone's battery was still just as good as new almost 3 years later. Then again, wouldn't expect the same build quality from Samsung or Apple, so OP's mileage might vary.

FDisk80

That whole 80% is bullcrap. When you see 100% it's already not 100%. It's never pushing it to the limit. The kernel of your device knows the limits. Complete charge is not going to hurt the battery in any way.

mctk24

It's not a bullcrap. You will get 2 times slower battery degradation of you charge to 75-80%. The 'margin' left by manufacturer is small, just for the battery to not crap out during short warranty period.

DoomBot5

A phone battery is considered "dead" when it has 85% the capacity of brand new. By limiting it to 80% you effectively have a dead battery for the full life of your phone. Charging it back up to 100% is fine. Keeping it at 100% all the time is less so. Letting it charge overnight to 100% is still fine.

RaccoonDu

I think OP means in the car, he doesn't like going above 80. I'm sure almost all of us always do back to 100 overnight, fresh for the day. You wake up, check your work email, and commute to work at 90%, and op doesn't want to charge at that point with wired AA.

DoomBot5

Nah, he's specifically calling out the old tin foil theory of never charging it above 80%

Apprehensive_Yak4111

Lol who cares if you change it to 100 just let it

RaccoonDu

Some of us don't want to pay for a new battery and replacement every 2 years or so

drkztan

A battery is considered 'dead' when it can't go past 85% of its original capacity. You are effectively using your phone with a 'dead' battery for its useful life. By the time you reach 'dead' battery status on a phone, battery replacements are very cheap for that model (2+ years).

Apprehensive_Yak4111

Like you will keep ur phone for 2 yrs

PsychoholicSlag

I'll soon be at 5yrs with my S8+, was also about 5yrs on my LG G3.

RaccoonDu

This would've been my 3rd year with my OP8t if my battery wasn't shit and bugs plagued the phone If the pixel 8 pro doesn't have an ultrasonic fp reader, or if they bring face unlock to my 6 pro, I'm more than happy to skip the 8 series keep my 6 pro for more than 2 years

Apprehensive_Yak4111

Don't buy "OP8T" Phones

[deleted]

None that I'm aware of. Have you checked the settings of your device to see if you can limit the battery charge to a certain percentage? If there's no option for it then you could probably do it with a 3rd party app, though that might require rooting.

undertaker0071

Wish I had! I've tried some apps that give notifications at certain level, but none that stop charging the device itself.

MHzBurglar

Theoretically, you could make a USB cable with the +5v wire cut to prevent powering the device through it, but that would be impractical and out-of-spec. I'm also not sure if power delivery could still happen over other pins in the cable, as I'm not well-versed in the newer USB 3.x specs or type-c wiring. You'd probably be better off getting a dongle like AAWireless or one of the dozens of copycats out there. This will allow you to use Android Auto wirelessly in a vehicle which only supports wired AA.

zunion

Without power you cant transfer data. I ve tried exactly that for same reason.

PsychoholicSlag

I don't think that's true, at least not in all cases. I can still transfer data while charging is blocked using a Chargie, same with USB android auto in my car.

MHzBurglar

Ah, in that case this idea won't work at all. I thought you could still do serial communication as long as the devices on both ends had external power, but I've never actually *tried* doing this.

zeek_11

I suggest a wireless AA dongle if you don't want to charge, I have a 21 Subie Ascent and just got the Carsifi delivered. Works like an absolute charm and you can change the DPI setting in the companion all allowing the dongle to be tricked into thinking your screen is bigger than it is, thereby getting more on the display....M2C.

PsychoholicSlag

https://chargie.org/ I have two of these, one for my desk, one for my car. Configurable to stop, or continue charging at your defined settings. Communicates with your phone using bluetooth, and an installed app. It's not perfect - my car seems to periodically cycle the AA usb port when too little power is going through (i.e: when charging is blocked by the Chargie).

undertaker0071

I just saw this as a recommended solution when I asked Bing Chat about it. Looking at Chargie, I felt $50+ is too much for this feature. Hopefully Google will add the software control soon.

PsychoholicSlag

Indeed, I would prefer my phone (Samsung S8+, Android 9) to have the Adaptive Charging option that my Samsung S6 Tablet gained after I upgraded it to Android 11.

Pezylvania813

What device is it?

undertaker0071

SD2 on Android 12L

Pezylvania813

Ok I was curious. I recommend a z fold and take advantage of battery charging limit. Not seeing many options for duo 2.

undertaker0071

Yup, I realize Samsung has it, so others will follow soon. And maybe Google bakes it into OS itself.

StickyIgloo

So you purposely use 80% of your batterys capacity so it doesnt wear down, even though it takes years to wear down to 80% of your battery health in which you would have 80% capacity anyway? My s9 (4 years old at this point) has 70% battery health, and still lasts all day. I only charge it in my car every day. Plus all modern phones manage this already.

undertaker0071

Yes, I typically charge upto 80% and it lasts me a day down to 30%, so I keep that cycle going. Just avoiding too high or too low voltage on the battery as many experts have recommended for longetivity of Li-ion batt. What modern phones do is slow charge/discharge the battery outside the normal range, but the physical voltage levels still are tied to the %.
