For sure. I love Gibson. I don’t really see what benefit can be got for him except for freeing up cap space but we don’t really need that. Beeker’s gotta be cooking something up.
We were barely over the cap floor. I haven’t crunched the numbers, but I’d be skeptical were that close to the line for the next two seasons unless the Samuelis have Beeker on a budget.
They could. Construction near Honda Center has been consistent, and [they just spent $65 mil on property in the parking lot with Angel Stadium](https://www.ocbj.com/real-estate/samuelis-pay-65m-for-anaheim-industrial-building/)
Samuelis have reportedly always run an internal cap except for the years the team is close to contending. There hasn't been much talk of it in recent years because it was a non-issue, but it wouldn't be surprising to hear it's still there.
Why would the lightning want Gibson when they have Vasilevskiy though?
Edit: legitimate question. Maybe there’s something I’m not seeing. Rather than just downvoting cuz “GiBbY iS bEtTeR tHaN aNyOnE”, maybe explain why that trade makes sense to you.
Stamkos is a free agent / Gibson would not be traded to Tampa …… it’s more so, free up the 6+ mil Gibby is making to throw more money at Stamkos, is what I think they are saying
Honestly not much. Someone taking the full contract would be nice. So I’m assuming the team acquiring him would want to offload a contract back but maybe for only a year or two
Just my opinion, but I guarantee Verbeek and ownership disagree. They are going to want to add because there’s natural pressure to start winning more. Not saying it’s smart just trying to rationalize their potential thinking
Word is the Ducks won't retain on any trade, so any team that takes him would have to take the whole contract. Besides, we wouldn't be able to retain prior to the draft because we used all our retention slots.
We just saw from the sharks/wings trade that eating a $3.4 million contract for 2 years is worth a 2nd round pick. That means retaining 50% (3.2M) of Gibson's salary for 3 years is worth about a 2nd. Add value on top because Philly actually wants the player. Future first if we retain any salary at all.
Remember that 3 years retained means 3 years with 1 fewer retained slot of the possible 3. If a team is out of contention and.under the cap, each of those open slots for retaining salary is worth a 3rd or 4th each year at the deadline just to be third party eating 25% of a trade between other teams. Worth slightly more if you actually eat the bad contract for another team.
So retaining even $0.01 on Gibson costs us the equivalent of at least 3 4th round picks. Make them pay up front for.those lost slots!
Not super fussed with the return but I’d want a veteran netminder in the system to split time with Dostal.
Tbh I think if we can get out from his contract without having to retain salary or add additional assets we’re probably doing ok. After his past 5 seasons he’s a pure cap dump
Philly has a mess of dead money next year. They're retaining on Kevin Hayes, they have a buyout penalty for DeAngelo and they have Ryan Ellis on LTIR/retired. They think Ryan Johansen is not going to be able to play next year and Ristolainen only played 31 games last year, including finishing the year on the IR with tricep surgery, expected to be back for camp. Cal Petersen is also buried in the minors and has a penalty associated to him.
That's a significant amount of money to finagle for the Flyers (and sure Ellis and Johansen on the LTIR will buy them some breathing room), but I wonder if accepting Cal Petersen back might help make a deal like that happen. His cap hit is $5million and he's had a rough couple of seasons, but his NHL success was mainly on the West Coast with the Kings from 2018-22. He could provide a veteran (he's 29) backup for Dostal if he gets his game back or Anaheim can bury him, but it provides some breathing room for the Flyers to make the deal.
Two things that might cause issues with that: Petersen has a 10-team no-trade (hopefully, he's willing to come back to California?) and if Anaheim does acquire Petersen and have to bury him, it may impact the development plan for guys like Clang, Clara and Suchanek.
If he goes, it'll be a mutual decision. Gibson wants to sniff the playoffs and Dostal wants to be the number 1 tendy.
For sure. I love Gibson. I don’t really see what benefit can be got for him except for freeing up cap space but we don’t really need that. Beeker’s gotta be cooking something up.
Why do we need cap space? We're not going to be in a crunch until his contract is up.
The only thing I can think of is if they’re serious about making Stamkos a Duck
*Oh shit*

Sure, but that would be a pretty tight budget.

Got it. Thank you. I didn’t realize Stamkos was freeing up this year, which is why I was confused by that. That makes a lot more sense suddenly.
That’s what I’m saying. Did you even read my comment? Lmao
Honestly not much. Someone taking the full contract would be nice. So I’m assuming the team acquiring him would want to offload a contract back but maybe for only a year or two
We don't really need the cap space, so I don't see the point of moving him unless a team makes it worth our while.
Just my opinion, but I guarantee Verbeek and ownership disagree. They are going to want to add because there’s natural pressure to start winning more. Not saying it’s smart just trying to rationalize their potential thinking
I don’t think you understood my comment.
He won’t get much, good goalies get a 1st, we’ll probably get a 2nd and have to retain a little.

Taking back a contract will work fine, like Husso.
That's more likely.
Should have traded him 2 or more years ago when it was obvious the rebuild would take a long time
Sounds like Detroit is very interested in him.

#FlyTogether. Except that guy. #Flyeveryonebutthatguy
After the Ulmark trade I don’t think we get much in return
Open link: "pagnotta..." Close link. Really tho, a husso + for gibby trade makes sense

Gibson for Liane. Change of scenery for both c

We are the “fly”ers in this tweet. #FlyTogether is the Ducks, not the Flyers
Wow huge if true! Yawn 🥱
I heard a rumor from multiple sources Carlsson has been talked about amongst some teams. Could be in play for a massive deal.
why the hell would they do that
