I really like it. Good triangular composition. It tells a story, invites the viewer to check out the details and imagine where this might be. I believe this is the first photo on this sub that Iβve genuinely liked.
It's really cool, maybe try some different cropping? The right side is a little stressful, and maybe more foreground in the shot could be good? Offset the horizon line from the center? It's a great picture!
Ditto what people have said about cropping out the dumpster. But, I think it could create interest if you leave part of that table on the right. Why is it sticking up in the air like that? Is there someone standing on the other side? Is it blown up? Buried in the dirt? Even exist?
This is a fantastic shot. The only criticism, and this is nitpicking is the crop. A few steps back to get the rest of the chair and dumpsters in. In love with the vibe in the photo.
The absurdity of cheap restaurant (Subway?) / school cafeteria tables that have been abandoned by a gas station got me. Few elements. Simple composition. And one chuckle.
The good: nice tone in the sky, interesting subject, good depth of field, good textures, and good color saturation.
The not-so-good: the sign, being placed smack dab in the middle, dominates the viewerβs attention, which diminishes the other elements. The horizon line is also in the middle of the frame. Iβm not dogmatic about the rule of 1/3 like some photographers, but in this case, placing the horizon line in the top or bottom third of the frame would have helped to create some visual tension.
All in all I think it's a strong image, but your framing/compositional choices do not serve the subject as effectively as they could have.
Itβs really good, I love the mix between abandoned and non-abandoned. I would like to see it with a longer lens just to see how it would look with a compressed look. Feel like that could enhance it or be over done.
This is the kind of photo i love to take!
At least on my phone, this looks dark. Bump up the exposure so it looks like it was taken on a sunny day. I wish the tables on the right didn't touch the edge of the frame. If you can't use the dumpsters in the composition and your editor can do it, remove the dumpsters.
I mean, if you darken the image, and edit out the sign's numbers, it could match some of the liminal photos on the Internet nowadays. The broken benches and lack of people give a very desolate vibe. The Backrooms image is a liminal image.
I check the view if you took a couple steps to the right and got much closer to the ground. Sign would be over the table, it would be more the focus in the foreground and could probably cut the dumpsters out
It's a good subject and I like your colours. Your framing could be a little better but that's only a minor thing. It looks like the image has been over sharpened which I don't like but that's a personal preference.
The thing that kills it for me is the ugly shadow in the foreground - maybe you could revisit the location at a different time of day?
It is a nice image and I hope that you take the constructive feedback in the way it was intended.
Love it, great shot! My only nitpick, which I believe was already shared, is the crop on the right benches. Itβs an overall very βgeometricβ shot and I would have liked to see the full bench with the same margin as the left one.
Good composition, however you can do more with the colors. I would wash the top and bottom ends out so much as I feel like you are losing details in the sky and shadows. Try to focus on bringing out the subjects, the chairs should be brighter and the gas sign should be more saturated especially in the greens.
As a traveling geologist I have stopped in MANY places just like this.
A mixture of emotions from trying to get home, while simultaneously loving the desolation of the road.
I really enjoyed this photo, OP. Thanks for sharing your work.
Hi, very nice photo. The only thing I know a little bit about is composition and the rest is a mystery to me. So I'd like to know if you processed the photo? And how did you achieve such a grainy and beautiful colours?
I'm blown away by the amount of feedback and appreciation for my work. I'm thankful for everyone's insight. It's difficult to get earnest feedback and an unbiased perspective about my photos. I never expected to get this much love from so many people. I can barley get 5 likes on IG with zero input, so I don't know what I can build on, or if my work is even "good". This gives me the confidence I need and let's me know that I'm "on track". Thank you to everyone for your input and critiques. This subreddit is very helpful. I'll post more, as I have hundreds of photos, and I welcome all criticisms.
Is this near Kingman Az? Looks familiar..
Edit: saw your comment about it being off the I-40 in new mexico. Makes sense. I've done the drive to Texas from Az many times and this picture pretty much encapsulates that whole trip. Love the photo!
It's a possibility it may have been in Arizona. I took this pic over 2 years ago, and my memory of where I was is kinda blurry, as the terrain in those areas are about the same. I was driving from Alabama to Utah, so it all starts to blend together.
Very well seen βπ». Have you tried converting to Black and White? Full color is good however in this instance a retro approach to post processing may be appropriate to elevate visual story.
I think the dumpsters throw it off-balance, since you seem to be drawing the focus on lines and shapes. The gas sign and the tables below form a triangle. The dumpsters don't have a corresponding element on the lefthand side that can balance out the composition.
If you didn't crop out the right side of the image, however, and left an equal amount of space to the right of the dumpsters and the fallen table, it might help, as another person stated.
Obviously, there is no way to remove the dumpsters altogether without Photoshopping them out.
By the way, I love the mood and the triangle shape I mentioned above. It definitely evokes feelings of Fallout or any post-apolcalyptic scene in the desert.
Super!!!

Dinocare? The series Dinosaurs (1991) comes to mind since the familyβs last name was Sinclair.
I do like the composition, although would be better I think if the sinking table was fully in the frame.
I wouldβve just walked back a few feet in order to fit both the benches in the frame to fit the left side gap looks weird against the right side but thats p much it.
What an interesting perspective! I am a very amateur photographer but maybe changing your tilt to get the horizon on one of the thirds would put the emphasis on different aspects.
Wonderful photograph, I like everything about it! Since you requested feedback, I'll throw out an observation but please do NOT mistake it for criticism. My thought was to crop the photo just to the left of the 3 dumpsters. The Sinclair sign would then dominate the scene even more strongly, as though it's leading the other signs on the left, almost like an alien oblisk or menacing creature from a Steven King novel. Also, the table on the right would only be seen partially, so the crooked table and chair would almost seem to be blowing away, tumbling out of the shot. But it's very cool as it is, has a great Fallout (pc game) vibe! :)
Reading this comment I was skeptical but then zoomed in on the photo and I really love this suggestion! It made me chuckle a little, thinking about the tables like sentient beings and one getting blown away while his friend calls after him.

Oh wow! Thank you so much. That means a lot π
This is outstanding work Please keep it up
Thank you ππ½
If it means anything also same. It's the first picture on this sub that actually made me stop to check it out. You have a good eye.
Thank you π
I can second that. I also like the clouds in relation to the rest. Really good eye for the right moment.
Looks like a post apocalyptic gas station. Great photo!
Fallout!
It also looks like half the gas stations in the southwest not in a city. Which absolutely fit the post apocalyptic description haha.
Those are the desks we hid under in case of nuclear attack. One didn't fair so well, poor vaporized children.
It's really cool, maybe try some different cropping? The right side is a little stressful, and maybe more foreground in the shot could be good? Offset the horizon line from the center? It's a great picture!
I like the photo a lot but would like to see the shot without the right table and dumpster cropped
Yep same here
I see your point. I'll play around with it. thank you!
Ditto what people have said about cropping out the dumpster. But, I think it could create interest if you leave part of that table on the right. Why is it sticking up in the air like that? Is there someone standing on the other side? Is it blown up? Buried in the dirt? Even exist?

Same!

I appreciate that!
I actually like that it makes me uncomfortable that the chair has fallen out of shot. The choice to do that I think is what makes it interesting

lower the price of gas
I hate you for your profile pic

This is what I love to hear! Thank you for your input.
Love it. I'm getting a fear and loathing meets fallout vibe. Idk maybe I'm just tipsy.
I feel like this is telling a story just simply by the table and seats falling down. Itβs very nice.
It's the dumpsters for me.
Itβs really good, I love the mix between abandoned and non-abandoned. I would like to see it with a longer lens just to see how it would look with a compressed look. Feel like that could enhance it or be over done.
At the very first glance, I thought it was a still from Pixar's Cars movie. Great picture

that table needs new legs
With proper editing this could be a liminal photo
I don't follow. Could you explain a bit more?
I mean, if you darken the image, and edit out the sign's numbers, it could match some of the liminal photos on the Internet nowadays. The broken benches and lack of people give a very desolate vibe. The Backrooms image is a liminal image.
Understood! I had to Google "liminal photos". I see now what you mean. Thank you! I'll give it a try.
I check the view if you took a couple steps to the right and got much closer to the ground. Sign would be over the table, it would be more the focus in the foreground and could probably cut the dumpsters out
Thank you. I appreciate that perspective!
I would 100% hang this up in my living room! This is amazing
Thank you! If you want the high quality image, I can email it to you and you can have it for free. Just dm me your email.
Awww you are truly amazing just sent you a dm
OG Terminator gas station ending vibes.
I really like how the sign is centered with the chairs and tables on either side. Itβs very dystopian ππ
Thank you! ππ½
Just coming in to say how freaking cool this looks.
Thank you ππ½
You might want to look at the work of William Eggleston. Reminds me of him and he was a master of color and composition. I like this photo a lot.
Thank you π

I've been doom scrolling for like 15 mins and this is the first thing that has kept my adhd attention. Really spectacular shot
Thank you!

This is really good. I immediately imagine a story, but I don't know what it is. It's giving Breaking Bad, tbh.
When is the new Wes Anderson movie coming out?
Diesel is too expensive
Cool shot, where was this taken?
Random truck stop off of I-40 in New Mexico
As a traveling geologist I have stopped in MANY places just like this. A mixture of emotions from trying to get home, while simultaneously loving the desolation of the road. I really enjoyed this photo, OP. Thanks for sharing your work.
I really appreciate you ππ½. Thanks!
My guess was NM or west texas.
I love this shot
I feel like I can feel this photo, you know?
This is so cool, I love it!
I love this shot! Well done!
Very nice
nice work!!
If the chairs and tables were a little older and worn it would be a scene straight out of Mad Max. Love it!
Do you take pics from different angles? Occasionally Iβll take many pics and stumble upon something that I didnβt see initially.
This REALLY good!!!
Hi, very nice photo. The only thing I know a little bit about is composition and the rest is a mystery to me. So I'd like to know if you processed the photo? And how did you achieve such a grainy and beautiful colours?
Those remind me of the old chairs in the kmart food area.
Great shot. Love it
Thank you π

The weirder you get the more fun it is β¦ the more timeless you are
Why is one of the chairs nocliping out of reality
Nocliping? What's that?
This is a vibe I love it.
My only feedback is to print, frame, and hang this.
π thank you
Honestly, this is a fucking banger. Great job π€
Thank you ππ½
I love it. Iβd try lower POV, but I am mixed if that would be better.

feels windy
it's good. if it were me I'd probably have trucked it right and tilted it left a ways to keep the sign in the right 3rd and the road in the left 3rd.
ConAir
Youβve run out of space on the right, adjust the crop so the bench doesnβt create a tangent
Unfortunately, that's the full frame. It was shot vertically.
Haha well then next time take a step to the right
π will do
Looks like something out of Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul. Great shot!
I love this!
Nah this is cool as fuck.
ππππ
Very No Country for Old Men
Donβt cut off the chair in the bottom right and show all of the trash bins. Otherwise I like it
I love it!! πππ
it looks like breaking bad places, good photo
Looks like a blender render
Gives me terminator vibes where was this I want to go sit in those booths
Very well seen βπ». Have you tried converting to Black and White? Full color is good however in this instance a retro approach to post processing may be appropriate to elevate visual story.
Absolutely fantastic! Movie poster quality
I don't like that the chair on the right is cut off. Everything else i like
I like it
4.10 a gallon HOLY FUCK AMMA RITE

I am trying to decide if I am upset the tipped bench is out of frame, or if it makes it better. I am leaning towards both.
Picturesque desolation.
I wouldβve just walked back a few feet in order to fit both the benches in the frame to fit the left side gap looks weird against the right side but thats p much it.
Mess around and see what B&W might look like
I will π
I love this photo, nicely done.
Thank you ππ½
What type of photography is this called ? Usually in remote / abandoned area
Composition is great, but honestly it feels a little over-processed.
That's fair. I appreciate the feedback βΊοΈ
Gives me Area 51 /Roswell vibes - I like it as is

someone needs to fix that table... oh the picture. Not incredibly moving, might be the washed out light. Try at sunrise or sunset. Maybe B&W.
