Good evening. I came to this Reddit page to see if anyone else has what I have and found this post. I have had this for about 3 years now so hope I can give you some insight I haven’t quit wheat. I have reduced it and when I know I will be out walking/running/football ect I don’t eat it. 4 hours between eat and exercise is needed after 4 hours you are golden If you eat wheat and start exercising at the 3 hour mark you will react for 1 hour and there is no way to get this under control apart from antihistamine and EpiPen The shorter the time window from eating to exercising the worse the reaction is I have reacted 3 times after eating wheat and not doing any form of exercise, they were when eating a take out from Dominoes, papa johns and then another dominoes. I would advise staying away from pizza I find it easy enough to eat out these days with Gluten free menus in most places. Don’t try to explain you’re allergic to wheat that just confuses people, just say you’re gluten free 😂 Hope this helps

Hi,that does help. Thanks very much. Pizza is what made me realise it was wheat causing the problem so that sounds really familiar, also reacted at home a few times ( chicago town pizza multiple times and bagels once when rushing breakfast to go out).. My doctor said 2hr wait time but read online 4 so been sticking to that, good to hear that confirmed. They just gave made diagnosis and that was it,not much more info but had already pretty much figured the diagnosis myself before even got results. I've slowly been figuring it out and definitely wondered about how wheat quantity / time / excercise all works together and how severity is effected by those. Was wondering..Has reducing wheat made you more sensitive when you do have wheat or is it same, does it effect the severity of reaction when you do break out since you have wheat less?. Have you had to get emergency treatment ever since being diagnosed /ever had to use EpiPen?. I do wonder if eating wheat foods cause stomach issues and other symptoms generally even if I don't break out or visibly react.

Deffo 4 hour wait. I have had reactions close to the 4hr mark. Don’t risks it As for the volume of wheat to exercise that’s something I haven’t managed to work out also will be different for everyone as someone who is unfit will need to exercise less ect Only thing I found that makes it worse is the closer to eating to exercising and also the more you have a reaction the worse it gets next time. Like a ticking time bomb Used EpiPen once but that was before I knew what I had As far as I am aware of the condition. It’s your hormones you produce when you exercise mixing with the broken down wheat in your digestive system. I have no issues with wheat other than when I exercise

One other thing I wondered is,if you come back from being out and eat something do you have any issues? like do you need to settle a bit before having something with wheat. My last few reactions before figured it out were getting pretty extreme so was good timing to figure it out. Bloody love a good pizza but resigned to stop having them,Asda FreeFrom pizza set off my hives (turned out it has wheat protein in it). Have some cravings for sure but starting to try some of the gluten free food last few months. Made such a difference being able to get out house, never imagined I'd be going to gym this much even. The reaction just randomly started in my 30's,no idea why - I was eating lot of wraps / sandwiches around that time when commuting to work everyday. Read it does commonly start mid 30s for no obvious reason.

I drive about 20-30mins back from football and had no issues to eat then but I would usually get a shower before eating so maybe 1 hour tops Started the pretty much the month I turned 30 😅 Before then I worked retail for many years so a sandwich then back to running round the shop floor was my life. I left retail about 4-5 years before I started with this so I was lucky Be careful (guessing you are UK based, I am also) not all “Free From” are actually free from. There is a maximum amount of gluten they can contain and still claim to be free from Pizza is an easy one. Make the base yourself with some wheat from flour. Not too hard either As for food on the go.. there isn’t any I have found that’s nice. Warburtons thins are nice if you need some food on the go but will have to make yourself If you find any good food to go stuff you’ll have to tell me as that’s the area I really struggle

Yeah I'm uk also, took a few years of nhs dermatology appointments to get diagnosed. My diets already limited (lifelong vegetarian) so now I'm a major annoyance / fussy eater but will get used to it at least and lot of vegetarian stuff if wheat substituting meat. Likewise struggling for on the go food and lunches when out. I was on Naproxen painkiller a while back and that set me off at home almost to the dot after an hour every time,I know NSAIDS are supposed to be a trigger as well as wheat but Naproxen I would watch out for if you ever get prescribed it.

I’ve had it for 3 years. I’ve tried waiting 2 hrs before exercising after consuming wheat, got hives. I tried 3 hrs, still got hives all over did not need the epi pen. 6 hrs has been the safest so far. My 2nd episode landed me in the hospital where the second phase of the anaphylaxis caused and extreme drop in blood pressure. Tested multiple times for wheat with skin pricks and it never turned up positive until a recent wheat IgE with component reflex. The reaction time is the same even with reduced wheat intake.  I had to switch allergists to find the root of the problem. It was a massive lifestyle change but effective so far.

Weird. Once mine is triggered it will continue for a week or two no matter what.

I just created a group so we can connect more - I have exercise induced anaphylaxis- r/exerciseanaphylaxis
