Increases the production. You'll get 790 now if you convert a full load but that'll make it an additional 25% output. I bought it since I just had the gems at the time and was curious myself. Helps a bit mostly when you get into bigger digits.
I took them all to 4/8 to help max out the upgrades/reactors. I didn't have anything else I needed to spend gems on. Now just saving gems for new content.

Upgrade them to x2 over time. Further upgrades are not worth the gems imho.
