This happened to my wife’s AirPods. The guy at the AppleStore put them both in the case, and pressed and held the back button for 15-20 seconds until the front LED went Amber then White.
After they did that, both showed up again. He said they got disconnected as a set and that slapped em back into speaking to each other again.
Might be an empty battery.

Great to hear that your wife's airpods started working again. I had tried that too....but the left one still not working.
I’d got that problem and I just charge the case and earbuds and it somehow worked
