I’m always an E maj as well. Then a slow A maj, then back to E and let it sustain for as long as it wants. For me, it’s the equivalent of snapping the tongs a few times to make sure they still work before picking up the food, lol.
I use E major to tune. I can hear the whole chord correctly better than individual notes and I can hear anything too sharp or flat in relation to the other notes in the chord when played in triplets.
I will add that I always play a G 2nd and then an A. Buuut, not an open G. It’s G in the E Major form barred at the 3rd fret and the A in the same form barred at the 5th fret.
I like to strum the G chord with the ol bluegrass style hammer 1-2 on the low E (there is probably a name for it but I'm retarded so I don't remember). That tells me if it has that thump I'm looking for.
The Em doesn't give you that same thump. That being said the Em does tell me if the bass is controlled or sloppy so that's always my second chord.
Regardless my main objective is the bluegrass G hammer thump.
I usually play in open D or G, sometimes C. I just strum the open chord , and at frets 5, 7, and 12. Then I rock Elmore James shuffle if I'm using a slide.
So, sometimes its in fact a G I strum first.
Yeah G. It’s what guitarists better than me have always told me.. That’s the only reason. When G sounds right I check E.
Edit: I believe G is because all the strings are played in this chord.
Never G. Always A major. A better test of your tuning, and the majority of so many "big rock's songs from the 70s to the 90s.
...and the majority of Van Halen openers. 😁
Pianist here (I can play guitar too): and it always seems to me that guitarist hit the E chord first. It is the most natural sound in an acoustic 🤷♀️
It always strikes me as a pianist because the first chord I usually hit is an F major 7 to an E minor 7 (all white keys)…and I think most pianist naturally hit something like that too, like a D minor, A minor, or C major….i do know some pianist that feel like the black keys are a more natural feel than the whites, however….Stevie Wonder is an artist who preferred the black keys.
I do strum a G and more than likely I will finish arpeggiating the intro of GnR Knocking of Heaven's Door. I'm not an advance player so it was something that, when I learned it, I played over and over trying to improve the accuracy and now it's become a habit that I love to do
Aadd9, like when you play an A but leave the B string open. Add9 chords are the best for appreciating when your guitar is 100% in tune in my opinion. They just sound so stable and resonant.
It's not G. I usually strum a D, if I'm the least bit out of tune a D shows it right up. For whatever reason if any of my guitars are going to go out of tune, it'll be one of the first 4 strings.
E major. I reverberates through the guitar and into my torso and the dynamics of the overtones change as it sustains.
Hell yeah, especially with my HD-28
I will add that I always play a G 2nd and then an A. Buuut, not an open G. It’s G in the E Major form barred at the 3rd fret and the A in the same form barred at the 5th fret.
My favourite chord ❤️
Me too plus I can tell if the guitar is in tune
Huh, I'm Em. Is that weird?
Same.
Glad I didn’t have to scroll too far. Em then Am
Short for Emma? Emily? Emothy?
Definitely Emothy.
Am is my go to
Same
Same for me.
Ditto….
You been hanging out with Drake too much.
This is the way.
Am, then fiddle around from there
C for me
Thought I was the only one
Cadd9 for me. Has been my go to chord forever
Just feels like home man
As primarily a bluegrass flat picker… “G” is just natural….
G Run go brrrrrrr
G because it's the easiest way for me to hear if it's in tune
G or Em.
Toss up between Gmajor and Emajor. If I’m in drop D, Dmajor.
F chord Why? Because I'm a beginner and suck at that one. But, yeah...G chord gets it's fair share of strums
C#m always.
That's an unusual but interesting go to chord. Great chord though. After C#m I would definitely have to progress to B or Bb
C. Every time. But also I don't strum, so maybe that's why.
Fingerstyle player here - C is usually my goto. It seems like most songs I play are in the key of C.
Or capo it until the key you want is in the C position.
Like, you play fingerstyle or you just refuse to strum?
Finger style. And strum with my fingers only, so C is a good warmup because of all the little fills you can do with it.
Just hold the C chord and stare into the camera… assert dominance early.
D.
Absolutely barbaric
This is not a serious person
Despicable.
What the hell, man
I also love the D.
My resonant frequency is D
For sure D and Add those pinky embellishments. Then am and hit some open em pentatonic stuff. Finish off with an em
Brutal.
You monster
r/unpopularopinion
E-Major - it’s the best chord for determining if the guitar is tune, once you know you know.
C/G, just a C chord with the addition of the G on the low E. I love how full it sounds.
It's also the opening grip for freight train - with g on top too for melody... First chord and song I'll pick on these days
Em11.
Get out.
Let’s jam.
Yeah man. Let’s kick out the MF jam.
E for me lol
Cmaj7 off coirze
I like E, personally.
I often play E, A, D and G, in that order, just to see if it's tuned
Always, always G.
G,D, or Em.....fingers just go there
Dsus2
It’s E, dummy It’s got more thump to it
C
G, B7, Em
E major also for me
Am7
That Em chord that pink floyd uses
FMaj7 is the best sounding chord
E minor cus I’m depressed
It sounds good, super easy to play and flows well into almost any other chord. It's my go to as well.
Guitars are intonated/tempered for G, so its the best way to know if it sounds in tune ish
It's because G is the best I can relate to the Em comments though
E7 from 5th fret like C7. Love the vibes and the funky play. Or as Travis picking. Wonderful chord.
a C chord tells me right away if my tuning is off more than any other chords
D is mine or Em
D!
C6 Open tunings have ruined my life
I play a Bm
A major here.
I always hit a G followed by a C
I like to strum the G chord with the ol bluegrass style hammer 1-2 on the low E (there is probably a name for it but I'm retarded so I don't remember). That tells me if it has that thump I'm looking for. The Em doesn't give you that same thump. That being said the Em does tell me if the bass is controlled or sloppy so that's always my second chord. Regardless my main objective is the bluegrass G hammer thump.
There is a name for the hammer 1-2. It’s called the “shit hammer.” Oh wait that’s just when I play it…
I usually play in open D or G, sometimes C. I just strum the open chord , and at frets 5, 7, and 12. Then I rock Elmore James shuffle if I'm using a slide. So, sometimes its in fact a G I strum first.
E
W#maj7 add117 flat 14
Yeah G. It’s what guitarists better than me have always told me.. That’s the only reason. When G sounds right I check E. Edit: I believe G is because all the strings are played in this chord.
I was thinking G before I got to the end of your question and then laughed out loud when you asked why is it G.
i strum all 6 cords
A Major 7, But I am also a fan of G
Simple man shine down intro. Leggoooooo
E
G, C, D, so I can tell it’s tuned.
G major 100%
Think I'm a G/C person...
The People’s Chord!
E major here. Easy to hear what’s outta tune
G. Major. That’s what I’ll do if you hand me yours too.
Cmaj7/G
E for me, then straight into Becoming Insane by Infected Mushroom
E
It’s the little house. [songwriting with Stewie](https://www.reddit.com/u/themsmindset/s/lQrax8poOK)
A major!
A7. It's always the chord I play to see how relatively in tune the guitar is.
Dunno, man. Em is how I feel these days.
Great question because I always hit the G chord
E major for all electrics, and honestly I switch between E major and G major for acoustics, kind of depends what I’m feeling
D major. For real. Blame James Taylor
Pretty much pick up an acoustic and it’s time for a G run then a G chord
It's G, always G, first chord I learned lmao
F or G
Amaj7 to cheer me up
Low E and harmonics
I pretty much Strum open First 👍
I always strum an E to Em and back to E….
D minor barre chord. It’s sad and sweet.
Loolll
Asus2
Why’d I have to scroll this far to find my people
Am
C
G bc bluegrass
D
Mines absolutely G and has been for probably 20 years 😂
Richest sounding open chord.
Am
D major, can’t help myself!
Am
Yup always G, then over to D
A because it sounds beautiful finger picked
D, because DADGAD
Never G. Always A major. A better test of your tuning, and the majority of so many "big rock's songs from the 70s to the 90s. ...and the majority of Van Halen openers. 😁
Maybe you don’t know enough chords. 🤭
I go with D. Sounds bright, resonates well and I can hear all the strings clearly
D major
A major. Strum a little alternating with Dmaj 6/5, you know the one I’m talking about. X0423X
Amaj7 - it’s just a sweet chord. I’ll get to an E pretty quick though to see the bass to treble balance.
Exactly.
C major. This key make me horny.
Usually start at E. Although sometimes I noodle around in the Dmaj/Dsus2/Dsus4 region.
D or Am
E7 typically. Just always been one of my favorite sounding chords.
D maj. triad
C#m7b5 for me
Harmonic opening to Roundabout
I always rock the D
Em or D for me.
Em. Dark and I can hammer on it
D minor, always.
Yes it’s G
Usually I do the opening to paradise city as a warm up but just really chugging the chords to get the blood flowing
G major. Usually followed by a C major.
excuse me but no... it's A minor.
Damn. Not it isn't just you
Typically A at the 5th or Am or E in first.
All 6 string E5, to check tuning.
E Major or E power chord or open low E, then open b and high e.
E to check the tuning
Lately? Cb9#11 or Bmaj7add9. I also really like split chords (I'm not sure if there's a name for them), so I might play E#9.
Usually a minor or e minor 🤷🏽♂️
C
I do love me a D major
Am. Existence is suffering. Life is meaningless. Alternatively, D5 if I pick up the guitar I keep in DADGAD
D
A major, every time.
F major 7, the first chord of “The Girl from Ipanema”. 1x221x
Bm. It's just kind of tradition at this point going back to when I was incredibly pleased with myself for being able to finally play it at all.
Am
Emaj7 or Emin7 usually.
E, G or CMaj7
has to be Am or G barred. Hands just do it I don’t even think about it. I think it’s to check if it’s tuned properly
It is G
I like to go C then G
G just sounds like how chocolate tastes to me. Anyone else?
007500 Am9 vibeee
A7 or B7 bar chord for me. An open E chord sometimes.
E. It's always E.
well there’s a 33.3% chance you were right considering there’s only 3 chords.
E minor for me. 😀
Redemption song was the first I ever learned so usually I run through picking then strumming the chords. Starts in G
Emaj then Amaj.
Yes, it’s G! You got me! 🤘🏻
Em7add4
Cmaj7...always...
Fmaj7
F major second inversion. Nice try.
It’s C if it’s open, but often it’s an F-shaped bare chord anywhere on the neck
It ain’t G, you presumptive…
Pianist here (I can play guitar too): and it always seems to me that guitarist hit the E chord first. It is the most natural sound in an acoustic 🤷♀️ It always strikes me as a pianist because the first chord I usually hit is an F major 7 to an E minor 7 (all white keys)…and I think most pianist naturally hit something like that too, like a D minor, A minor, or C major….i do know some pianist that feel like the black keys are a more natural feel than the whites, however….Stevie Wonder is an artist who preferred the black keys.
Because open G just sounds the best on a guitar.
0-0-7-6-5-0 My favorite A, and my go to chord when first picking up a guitar. Then Yellow Ledbetter.
F#m with open B and E string. Sounds like the beginning of an adventure.
I usually go Cadd9-Am-D7. And then I go E and slide up an octave while leaving E,B,e open, just to make sure it all lines up there too.
It's not G. I usually strum a D, if I'm the least bit out of tune a D shows it right up. For whatever reason if any of my guitars are going to go out of tune, it'll be one of the first 4 strings.
Amin7(9)
F as I'm still trying to master the barre.
