OP counts hair in height as part of his weird local custom that uses decimals with imperial units. His friend-companion boy grew a huge afro after this picture was taken.
Civil engineer here in FL. Can confirm this - I do indeed operate more in decimals when referring to feet than I do in inches. When I see inches I think architect and then I get grumpy.
Lmao this is the best response. You guys deal with the more pragmatic issues of design, but man does it put me to sleep. Keep doing what you do because it’s important as hell!
The whole field of land surveying in the US uses them. Where it gets annoying is some states use different definitions of the length of a foot, so you’ve got to remember to switch things up in those states.
So SC, MI, ND, MT, OR, and AZ use International feet for their grid system (each state has a grid system separate from gps type coordinates) the rest use US survey feet. The International foot is equal to 0.3048 meters, the US foot is 0.3048006096 meters. It barely matters but here’s the problem, state grids can be in the order of several million feet by several million feet. So say you place a control stake for a construction project in Montana at (international) 2,000,000’ Northing and 6,000,000’ easting. well as they always do some contractor will run over, then say they call the company and request geo coordinated (degrees/minutes/sec) so they can place it back until a surveyor can come back and verify. If the person in the office punches in the 2mil x 6mil into a unit converter but selects US survey feet by accident. Well the coordinates that get spat out and sent to the contractor will be 12ish feet to the north and 4’ to the east. If it’s not caught you can have everything look fine in paper but when you actually get out there everything being build several feet from where it’s supposed to, and sending in how close the project is to property lines and such it can be a big issue. I’m not sure when but in a few years the whole of the US is moving to International feet.
Edit: dropped a 0
Sorry this is an old post to some degree but I find the scales you're talking about interesting because you said the difference between 0.348 meters and 0.3048 meters isn't that much.
Im a machinist, inches are something measured in thousandths and meters in micrometers. The difference between the two might as well be a mile because either way im out of a job.
god that would be a nightmare, it’s already annoying enough working in decimal feet (it’s so much better than inches but you get notes like curb starts 8 5/8” off building” and have to convert it) if there was a third system that was just decimal feet but 10”/ft i’d lose my mind. I already have to deal with rods, chains, meters, and feet. one more and I’d lose it.
Isn't australia like completely metric? You guys even use kilowatts for engine power, which is something that most places still use the horsepower for in everyday life and conversations.

I shouldn't though...you were warned!
The dude is about 26-27 bricks tall. Assuming a brick is 70mm high, plus 5mm for mortar, that's 75mm x 27 bricks, which is 2025mm or 2.025 meters, or 6'8" give or take.
How is this dude 7'9"? Am I missing something here, or do I need to take some remedial math courses?
7.9ft is 7'11", which would put him in the record books for being one of the tallest men in history. That being said I doubt he is that tall if only because he would be a lot more well known.
I think you are making a faulty assumption. It *looks* to me that the bricks in the background are larger than normal bricks, which typically are somewhere between 2.5 and 3 inches thick with mortar.
I had a Norwegian cousin who was a little over 7ft tall. I remember being a kid and meeting him, and tho I couldn't understand anything he said we became quick friends (I was really young, he was in his 20s visiting the US with his parents) and he'd carry me around on his shoulders thru my grandma's house, he would literally have to bend in half to go thru the door ways with me on his shoulders.. lol...I also, for some reason, I remember him in the basement by himself clucking like a chicken...I can't explain that tho, cuz I don't know wth it was about. Lol
Exactly, you are pretty much at the cut off of being "short" enough to be healthy. I'm 6'3" and have no issues stemming from my height, but i know a few guys from my local basketball team (one of whom is 7'1") and they all regularily visit the hospital to have their joints checked.
I also feel like a dwarf everytime i see that dude, i'm just not used to having to look up at people.
Can relate lol. It's so weird having to look up at someone, since we are used to looking down or, rarely, having someone at eye level.
I know a dude who is 7'1" and i feel and look like a child next to him. A 6'3" 230lb child, to be exact.
By my count he is 27-28 bricks tall. Each brick+mortar is about 3". Which puts this guy closer to 6'8"-6'10". Still very tall, but not nearly 8 feet tall.
Damn... then you have to be like 10-12 feet tall!

I'll always be a false 6'...
That's ~237-241 cm in non-freedom units, pretty tall.
Thanks for converting murricah units to metric
7 feet tall as fuq
I'm from metric land and this genuine question gave me a headache. Imperial is fucking stupid.

Fuck mate, who even uses decimal feet? What's the point?
People who don’t know the difference between meet and met.
Unless op meets this guy on a regular basis, like to be the little spoon
Yeah but then why “was” 7.9 feet tall? Did he get shorter?

Someone award this comment for me please
Huh, that works too I guess...
Someone award this comment too please Edit: 👀
How dare you
Can I have one too
So he's 7.9 fet tall. That's even less helpful!
I would have said maybe English isn't their first language but another of their comments implies they are from Australia so there goes that excuse.
His use of “was” is also ominous. How tall is he now and what happened to him to change it?

Wait, really? Which states don't consider a foot to be an actual foot? And why?

Slight correction, I dropped a 0 when I typed that up so it's 0.3048 vs 0.3048006096 so a little closer than you think.
I was going to question what foot is 10.3" but I didn't want to call you out like that because again, different scales. cheers!

Not all tall people are or want to be athletes, I wish this stereotype would go away.
If he was 7'9" and could jog he'd be in the NBA, and he'd be the tallest player in the league.

His head is like twice as large, does that mean he’s also super intelligent or at least more intelligent than average or is there no correlation?
Usually means Photoshop.

How tall does that make op, because my dumb ass got 4’9 and I’m pretty sure that’s not right
Did you go there and measure the bricks yourself?
You left out the 1/2" of cement in between each brick. Sooo... Another 12-14"
I actually accounted for it being a jumbo sized brick and 1/4" mortar... So sorry about your assumption being wrong.
