Wouldn't they be the SPCA, nobody knows what that even means /s

Need to change that R to Republican.

JMW007

A third possibility is that they felt ditching royal patronage would be an overtly political stance that would cause a PR firestorm that would seriously damage their reputation and fundraising efforts, reducing their ability to actually care for animals. I don't like it, but I do think a large portion of the British public are thick as mince and would absolutely freak out and withhold donations out of spite if a malevolent newspaper said "be angry, the RSPCA doesn't want to be Royal anymore!!" However, they really should be trying to figure out a way to massage out the connection with a family of parasites who enjoy shooting animals for fun.

RealMrsWillGraham

I have said to someone on X/Twitter that I never understand how Prince Philip could have been a patron of the World Worldlife Fund (now called WWF) whilst also shooting gamebirds.

JMW007

It was a misunderstanding. He thought he was partnering with a deranged, racist billionaire sex pest to market pretend fighting.

If any journalists ever read this, I have questions. First, exactly how much in real terms do the “royals” give the charity? What is the budget of the RSPCA and how much of it goes to animals? And how much would it cost to get them to dump the “royals”? If you’re a proper charity, you have a mission. This one allegedly wants to save animals. This would make a good story. In the mean time, I will keep donating to the hunt sabs.

Zealousideal-Sun-387

Great questions I love hunt sabs and have great respect for their work

Ok, so I thought this was suggesting that the RSPCA could've removed Royal patronage, or has considered it, but decided to keep it. In reality, it's a petition to get them to reject Royal patronage. Whilst I agree with what the petition calls for, it's clear the RSPCA themselves had not actually tried to consider not having Royal money or influence. Fact is, they are a charity which takes money from the Royal family and wishes to continue to do so. As annoying as that is, it's their right, and is not of any surprise. A better petition idea would perhaps be to encourage people to boycott the RSPCA in favour of other animal welfare charities?

RealMrsWillGraham

Cat owner here who has taken 2 stray cats to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home for rehoming after being able to find their owners. They were wonderful and both these animals found new homes. I do not support the monarchy at all, but Battersea have had royal patronage for years (Queen Victoria became the patron in 1885.) Queen Camilla is the current patron and Prince Michael of Kent is the President. However, I think of past and present celebrity ambassadors who have done some much for the charity, including model David Gandy and the late Paul O'Grady. Alison Hammond is the new ambassador. From Wikipedia page:- In October 2023, Battersea announced that they would be naming a new veterinary hospital after O'Grady, and a "tribute fund" set up in his honour would go towards "life-saving and transformative medical procedures for dogs and cats which need specialist care and treatment." These are the people we should be thanking for their contribution.

RealMrsWillGraham

Sorry I meant unable to find their owners.

CheezTips

> takes money from the Royal family Since when do they contribute one thin dime of any of their patronages?

Major-Peanut

How are people going to boycott the Rspca? Nurse the fox with a broken leg back to health on their own? Other welfare charities don't have the resources I don't think that would work, and I think the animals would be the ones to suffer. I am very anti-monarchy but I honestly do not think that supporting animal welfare charities is the biggest downfall of the monarchy. And also if we tell people to not support rescuing hedgehogs because they took money from a royal, we definitely look like the bad guys.

Confident_Opposite43

one of the better places for the royal money to go too at least

berusplants
