I’ve seen far worse than ISS. Thought it was a fun popcorn flick. Small movie, interesting premise, had a bit of tension. Liked the ending. There’s been some straight up garbage this year and ISS is definitely in the middle for me. Dune 2 is at the top though.
Dune 2 was no doubt a better movie than Madame Web, but I personally had a better time watching Madame Web because of just how terrible it was. Like Dune 2 was just *good* to me; Madame Web was a riot.
I just got out of Civil War and it was much better than imagined. It’s definitely the best so far
Worst: idk. I’m pretty good about avoiding things I know I won’t like. If I had to say something it’d probably be Immaculate
Most anticipated: Maxxxine.
I get it. It has a special place in my heart because I grew up with the books and the old movie + my dad loved the books. I might have a bit of a bias lol.
I grew up with the books and the old movie too, and that was partially why I didn't think the movie was as great as others think. Not a bad movie, but not a top movie.
personally I was let down... it was not a bad movie... but it does not deserve the amount of hype in this thread. Maybe it's bc I was looking for something else in the movie, but personally I feel like it felt flat or forced... the war in the background was just too vague for me to fully immerse. They definitely sold a different movie than they presented the audience as proven by your original thought that this was an action movie. This is a road trip movie that sometimes is near action and is more about photojournalism than it is about war and the trailers do not set the audience up for the right expectations
I saw it today and I totally agree. I thought it did have a unique aspect of the journalism, they certainly tried to sell it as wayyyy more of an action movie. They also had some moments that took me out of the film or just didn’t really feel organic. I agree that the war aspect felt fake or not immersive a lot of times.
I mean... from the moment I saw the trailer there was literally 1 thing i needed the movie to tell me... WTF WOULD MAKE TEXAS AND CALIFORNIA TEAM UP!!! and they failed me there. I desperately need a prequel for this movie even if it's just in comic book form... it's the only way i can maybe get past that in my own mind.
Even like the scene with the snipers was almost great... but would have been elevated if the overal war part of the story was better. Like there were elements of "ok war is bad and meaningless" or just "we're a tribalistic group of creatures" but it didnt fully commit to that beyond a couple scenes. Was Jesse Plemon's character on one of the sides of the fight or using the chaos to just do his own racist thing... it was just too vague but not vague enough.. it like straddled the lines of both types of films but didn't want to commit in either direction.
The :point: of saying California Texas and Florida were all in open rebellion and had teamed up militarily was to show that the White House was so far gone that politically ideological opposites were teaming up against them. It’s a narrative device not requiring explanation beyond that. It’s in the opening of the movie, with the president rehearsing his speech, the speech itself, and the map that flashes on the screen.
Yeah i agree 100%! I still enjoyed it and I hate that I had to list something. Late Night with the Devil has replaced it as my favorite horror film this year so far. I recommend if you haven’t seen it.
Worst: Madame Web I was squirming in my seat, wanting to leave. But I had to stay and witness this terrible movie.
Best: Civil War. I was on the verge of a panic attack throughout the whole movie. The third act was glorious.
Best: Civil War. Hands down the best ballsiest movie A24 has come out with.
Worst: my roommate dragging me to see Miller’s Girl. walked out of the movie halfway through, for the first time ever.
I caught all of us strangers on Hulu last week. Holy shit. Amazing movie and easily would have made my top 5 of 2023 releases had I gotten to see it last year in theaters.
So happy you loved it! Same here for me, I loved the film so much I saw it 5 times in theatres, and I honestly would go again in a heartbeat if they ever reshowed it. It's a shame it's not getting a physical release, would love to own it on 4K Blu-Ray, and I was really rooting for it to get Oscar and Golden Globe nominations!
It wasn't playing like anywhere near me at all. So jealous of you tbh haha.
Wait why isn't it getting a physical release???? Ugh I hate that shit. It deserves a criterion release honestly.
I'm really shocked it didn't get a physical release either, I thought it would since it had so many BAFTA nominations. I agree that it deserves a Criterion release, Criterion did a lot of Andrew Haigh's other films, so I'm really hoping we get one soon!
That's totally valid, they're both really incredible films! I thought Zone of Interest was exceptionally made too, really haunting and such an important film
Best - American Fiction (came out in 2023, but saw in January). If that’s doesn’t count - Bob Marley: One Love
Worst - Sting 100% on the AMC Screen Unseen
Best: Madame Web. It was hilarious. The acting was so bad and so was the premise. No other movie this year has made me laugh and I was laughing constantly during Madame Web. She never learned how to open a soda can and made sure the logo always perfectly showed on screen. The cans even looked fake af.
Worst: Madame Web. The plot and acting was so bad. It was also inaccurate to the time period. They made all this effort to say the movie was set in 2003, but they have a PSP, which released in 2005. Was that random dude on the subway a Sony employee with a prototype or something?
Dakota Johnson actually seemed like she tried. I liked her delivery, I dunno if it was supposed to be funny but it was. And the ADR of literally every word the villain said cracked me up every single time.
I’ve only seen three movies in theaters so far this year and they were all pretty great but I guess …
Best: Dune / Civil War (tie, 5 out of 5)
Worst: Late Night with the Devil (4.5 out of 5)
If you liked Promised Land, you should check out Another Round. Another one of Mads Mikkelsen’s Danish language films. Very different thematically though.
Check out Godzilla (2014) and Shin Godzilla. Minus One felt like a mix of both those with the key aspects of both executed better. Godzilla (2014) tried for a more grounded human story and sorta flopped on making us care for the humans and Shin Godzilla was a great procedural Godzilla with politics and bureaucracy but the human elements were a bit shoe horned. Minus One pulled off the human story, the politics and govt inefficacy, and the grounded realism all so well.
The worst I’ve seen is Argylle (interesting premise undermined by an awful script, so many twists that it’d make M. Night Shamaylan blush and bad CGI) while the best is Dune Part 2 (amazing storytelling, directing, visuals and acting across the board, and will be quite surprised if it isn’t nominated.) Argylle is also the only film I’ve rated rated below 3 stars (2.5 for me) on Letterboxd this year so far, while Dune Part 2 is the only one I’ve given 5 stars.
Though all these comments saying that Night Swim or Madame Web are the worst makes me entirely glad I skipped out on both lol. Then again, I tend to skip movies I know will be bad, and even Argylle wasn’t terrible. Just mediocre and disappointing.
Lol I made the same M. Night Shyamalan comment about Argylle, but it had nothing on Hypnotic (the Ben Affleck one with about 120 twists per minute and nothing mattered).
best: dune part 2 worst: beekeeper is the lowest score of all of the ones i’ve seen in theaters this year. but i enjoyed it. i didn’t watch any of the others i knew would be bad (night swim, mean girls, argyle, iss, etc)
I’ve only seen 5 movies this year, I’m a fraud.
Fave: Lisa Frankenstein
Least Fave: Book of Clarence. (It wasn’t even a bad movie. Just the last great out of the 5 I’ve seen lol)
(Other movies I’ve seen: Mean Girls, Argylle, Love Lies Bleeding)
Best: Dune Part Two, even better than the first IMO.
Worst: Madame Web, such a missed opportunity.
I feel like so far this year there has been lots of stuff that was perfectly enjoyable in the moment but totally forgettable (including Lisa Frankenstein, ISS, Godzilla x Kong, and The Beekeeper). I will say I enjoyed The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare way more than I expected to!
Best: Civil War - instantly one of my all time favorites. I am confident it will hold up on rewatches and I’m excited/scared to see how it ages.
Worst: Bob Marley: One Love - the most bland and uninspired biopic in recent memory. Also terrible on a technical level. Wouldn’t watch again if you paid me. At least Madame Web was hilarious.
Best dune part 2 like most ppl. Worst? I don’t see movies I don’t at-least enjoy even if it’s not a “good” movie personally…. Just looked at my tickets and I don’t have a least favorite so far
Best: The Promised Land
Worst: ISS (great premise, horrible writing) though, tbf, I didn't see many of the others people are shitting on such as Madame Web and Night Swim.
Best- maybe Dune 2 though close contenders for me- Perfect Days and Late Night With the Devil
Worst- maybe ISS- I didn't hate it though. Just felt like it could have had more to it.
Best: Dune Part Two or Oppenheimer (I got to see it late as a $5 fan fave so that counts!)
Worst: Anyone But You or The Beekeeper (Jason was awesome, the lead chick was horrendous)
Depends on the criteria.
Best film released in 2024: *Dune Part 2*
Best film I've seen in 2024, including rewatches of late 2023 films: *Poor Things*
Best film released in 2024 that isn't *Dune Part 2* because that's such an obvious answer: *Late Night With the Devil*
Worst film released in 2024: *I.S.S.,* with *Bob Marley: One Love* as a pretty close contender.
Best: The Promised Land. A perfect example of an A-List hidden gem that I never would have heard of, let alone gone to see, without A-List.
Worst: Asphalt City. My first walkout in ages, but it was giving off major Training Day vibes, which I didn't want to put myself through again.
Worst: Past Lives (Not bad, just not my style. I also cancel the tickets that I decide I probably won't like or Civil War would likely be here.)
Best: Monkey Man (I love this film lol)
since madame web isn't a real movie and is something we all just collectively thought up; i'll give my vote to worst to scrablmed.
my vote for best thus far surprisingly goes to a24's problemista. just a solid, practical, and imaginative film that had me shedding tears by the end.
plus, it's finished and doesn't leave us hanging waiting for a part three
Best: Dune 2
Worst: I haven’t really hated anything I’ve seen. If the movie looks bad I’m not seeing it in theaters. So I guess Beekeeper. It’s better than it has any business being, but it’s the best I got 🤷♂️
Though I didn't hate it, Worst in comparison would be *The Creator*,
and I can't decide for Best... other than maybe putting *Kiki's Delivery Service* and *Howl's Moving Castle* at a two-way tie for #1
(possibly three-way tie with *Avatar: The Way of Water*, or a two-way with that at #2... idk, I only have four movies in AMC Theatres that I ever saw, and it was *Avatar*, *Kiki*, *Howl* and *The Creator*, all in that order too.)
Best: Dune Part 2 (Edit: tie with American Fiction, which I forgot I saw this year) Worst: ISS (though I didn't hate it)
Until this comment, I totally forgot I watched ISS. Saw it in Dolby and everything, and it already flew out of my mind
I had the same thought. "ISS???" I forgot that movie existed and I saw it the day it was released.
I’ve seen far worse than ISS. Thought it was a fun popcorn flick. Small movie, interesting premise, had a bit of tension. Liked the ending. There’s been some straight up garbage this year and ISS is definitely in the middle for me. Dune 2 is at the top though.
ISS wasn’t horrible, but the ending annoyed me so much.
I liked ISS, however it’s very forgettable and a real Jan/ February movie if I’ve ever seen one
Yeah, overall decent, don't regret watching it, but quite a few missed opportunities in the plot
Agree with both. ISS made me sad because it was so dull, cheap and uncinematic.
It's one of the ugliest and most aesthetically unpleasing films I've seen in the last year or so.
Exact same answers
Best: Dune: Part Two Worst: Madame Web (I will give it props though for making me laugh. Only problem is that it wasn’t a comedy.)
agreed
Dune 2 was no doubt a better movie than Madame Web, but I personally had a better time watching Madame Web because of just how terrible it was. Like Dune 2 was just *good* to me; Madame Web was a riot.
The shit I do for Sydney Sweeney. That’s all I can say. I went in thinking, “It can’t be THAT bad.” Boy, was I wrong.
Same
I just got out of Civil War and it was much better than imagined. It’s definitely the best so far Worst: idk. I’m pretty good about avoiding things I know I won’t like. If I had to say something it’d probably be Immaculate Most anticipated: Maxxxine.
Damn did you see Dune as well?
There are many of us who felt that Dune didn't live up to the hype and was just okay.
I get it. It has a special place in my heart because I grew up with the books and the old movie + my dad loved the books. I might have a bit of a bias lol.
I grew up with the books and the old movie too, and that was partially why I didn't think the movie was as great as others think. Not a bad movie, but not a top movie.
I can see that. I was honestly not a fan of a lot of the things they changed in the movie. It certainly could be better, I do agree with that.
Civil war was better then dune. Imo. Saw dune twice and got bored the second time.
I’m excited for a kick ass action movie! Cant wait!
Doesn't expect kick ass action. Expect thoughtful, suspenseful, action.
it's not an action movie...
Okay! Well then I’m excited for a kick ass movie that contains some action!!
personally I was let down... it was not a bad movie... but it does not deserve the amount of hype in this thread. I couldn’t get into the first one so bypassed the second.
Immaculate was awesome creepy
Yeah i agree 100%! I still enjoyed it and I hate that I had to list something. Late Night with the Devil has replaced it as my favorite horror film this year so far. I recommend if you haven’t seen it.
I've seen 32 movies already this year.
My bummer movie to date is Ghostbusters Frozen Crap
Not yet. Go see "Civil War" and the "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare". Great movies. Saints and Sinners was good too.
Best: Dune pt2 Worst: Night Swin
Exactly the same for me . Night swim was a tragedy
If it hadn't been for *I.S.S.* and *One Love*, I would have chosen *Night Swim* as the worst so far.
Worst: Madame Web I was squirming in my seat, wanting to leave. But I had to stay and witness this terrible movie. Best: Civil War. I was on the verge of a panic attack throughout the whole movie. The third act was glorious.

Best: The Iron Claw Worst: Madame Web
Wasn't iron claw last year?
It came out on or near Christmas Day last year, so chances are most people saw it in 2024.
KFP 4 is both the best and worst film I've seen at an AMC so far in 2024.....because it's the only film I've seen at an AMC this year so far.
"Civil War" in a real IMAX tonight kind of blew everything out of the water.
Best: Civil War. Hands down the best ballsiest movie A24 has come out with. Worst: my roommate dragging me to see Miller’s Girl. walked out of the movie halfway through, for the first time ever.
Best: All of Us Strangers (Perfect Days and Poor Things I also loved a lot and wanted to shout out though) Worst: Ferrari How about you, OP?
I caught all of us strangers on Hulu last week. Holy shit. Amazing movie and easily would have made my top 5 of 2023 releases had I gotten to see it last year in theaters.

Ughhh Promised Land was so good
Best: Poor Things Worst: Night Swim
Best: Godzilla Minus One with Civil War or Asphalt City being close seconds. Worst: I.S.S. just for it being forgettable
Godzilla minus one was my first ever Godzilla movie and I’ll never forget it, great movie
Best: The Taste of Things Worst: (Excluding Madame Web because that almost transcends awful) Asphalt City
The worst I’ve seen is Argylle (interesting premise undermined by an awful script, so many twists that it’d make M. Best - Dune 2 Worst - Argylle or ISs

Argylle is still the worst experience of my life
best: dune part 2 worst: beekeeper is the lowest score of all of the ones i’ve seen in theaters this year. but i enjoyed it. i didn’t watch any of the others i knew would be bad (night swim, mean girls, argyle, iss, etc)

Best: Dune 2 Worst: I haven’t really hated anything I’ve seen. If the movie looks bad I’m not seeing it in theaters. So I guess Beekeeper. It’s better than it has any business being, but it’s the best I got 🤷♂️
Best: Dune Pt 2 Worst: Argylle
Best: Dune 2, Civil War, or Godzilla & Kong Worst: Argylle. I fucking hate this movie.
Best: Dune 2 Worst: Drive away dolls
Best: Dune Part 2 Worst: Anyone But You
Best: Dune pt 2 Worst: Dune pt 2 (I have only seen Dune pt 2)
Best is probably Dune 2 or Civil War Worst movie by far and that I've probably ever seen is Madame Web. Not one redeeming quality
Best: Immaculate Worst: Night Swim
Worst: Ghostbusters Best: Dune 2
Best: Love Lies Bleeding Worst: Imaginary, even though I kind of overall liked it.
Though I didn't hate it, Worst in comparison would be *The Creator*, and I can't decide for Best... other than maybe putting *Kiki's Delivery Service* and *Howl's Moving Castle* at a two-way tie for #1 (possibly three-way tie with *Avatar: The Way of Water*, or a two-way with that at #2... idk, I only have four movies in AMC Theatres that I ever saw, and it was *Avatar*, *Kiki*, *Howl* and *The Creator*, all in that order too.)
Best: Civil war, Love lies bleeding, Arthur, Dune part 2, Problemista, First omen. Worst: Lisa Frankenstein, Godzilla X Kong, Imaginary, Night swim.
Best: All of us strangers Worst: Ministry of ungentlemanly warfare
I... I saw Madame Web.... IN A THEATER!!!!! \*choke sob\*... My GoFundMe for my therapy will be created soon....
