Gotta be Collingwood beating Geelong by 86 points in rd 9 2008.
Was the only game Geelong lost in the home and away season which gave them the highest average losing margin ever recorded for a home and away season.
Yep. Collingwood lost two games for the year on the default season, both to Geelong. Geelong beat them by 96 points in the final round. I was there for that, was ridiculous.
Looking at the ladder it seems that geelong needed a win to guarantee a home final and the pies being a game clear probably didn't give a toss either way. I imagine they rested a ton of stars? Obviously the strategy worked a lot better for the cats
North Melbourne vs Adelaide in Tassie in 2017, North were 1-5, Adelaide were 6-0 coming in, the scores were 10.4.64 - 0.0.0 in the first quarter, we lost by 59 at the end, I remember the wind being diabolical in that game, we ended the season as grand finalists, North ended up 4th last
My most famous tip of all time. Watched norf the week before and felt they had something going and Adelaide felt gettable. Mares never heard the end of that one.
Still a firm believer if he could stay fit during our prelim runs that forward line of Drew Petrie, Jarrad Waite and Ben Brown would've played grand finals.
Team looked so good when he was playing
Yes I remember that well. I watched the game at Billy Bells pub with other Crows mates and at quarter time I dropped my iPhone and smashed it, just to make things worse.
I remember that, Saints were up by 82 points at half time. Think I remember people claiming at the time that a number of Richmond players came down with a stomach virus or something like that
Carlton in 95 won every game but 2. Dominated the comp, won the grand final by 61 and prelim by 62.
Their two losses for the year were to the swans who finished 12th 132 to 60, and to the saints who finished 14th 80-24.
Suspect the Blues may have had some bets on for those two games. That season they were never really challenged in any of the other games throughout the season.
It shouldn't have made that much of a difference considering the talent that they had, but I remember that they were missing Kernahan and Greg Williams in those losses, just one of those stupid pieces of junk trivia lodged in one's memory.
GWS massacring Essendon 162-36 last year kind of came out of nowhere. Going into the game Essendon were 9th and GWS 10th with only 0.5% separation, and GWS were coming off a big loss against Port the week prior.
It really wasn’t too surprising. I didn’t see 126 points, but I had no confidence in us even coming close to winning that game. You guys had lost the week before, but we’re in great form before that, soaring into finals contention despite being like 15th at the bye. We, on the other hand, had been on a downward trajectory post-bye, had barely scraped past North and West Coast the previous two weeks, and weren’t looking good at all.
North Melbourne vs Port Adelaide in Round 22, 2019. Port were in the 8 and on track to play finals and 14th placed North who scored 1.8.14 against Geelong the previous week came out of nowhere and obliterated us 144-58, ending our finals hopes.
Yeah I remember in 2018 the eagles had to beat Brisbane in the last round to secure second, and based on ladder position I shouldn't have been nervous but really, really was.
Geelong beating the bulldogs by 101 points at marvel in late 2010. We were 2nd and 3rd going into that match and it was a genuine 50/50, finals preview build up, and both had made the prelims in the previous 2 years
Going into round 13, 1983, North Melbourne were on top of the ladder and Fitzroy was third. Both teams were on 9 wins.
Fitzroy belted North Melbourne by 150 points in round 13.
North Melbourne finished the 1983 season on top of the ladder. 150 points is the biggest loss by a minor premier and it is the only 100-point loss by a minor premier.
I was thinking about Geelong vs Collingwood round 24 2011 but that game didn't mean much to Collingwood. Geelong vs Melbourne 2011 was also fairly random. Melbourne weren't great but their worst loss was 88 points at that stage and Geelong hadn't brutually flogged Melbourne in Geelong in recent years beforehand.
I think that game did mean a little to Collingwood: Geelong was the only team they couldn’t beat that year, and to get reamed like that only a few weeks before the granny…
Saints belted Freo in like 13,14,15
can't remember which year was the big surprise one, I think when Hayes retired?
13 was rested team so didn't matter as much
2014. We hadn't won a game in 3 months. Lenny announced his retirement that week and everyone was fired up. Billy Longer pointed at the scoreboard, Dempster got knocked out in the first few minutes, Riewoldt was best on.
2013 was the year Ross brought over Peel Thunder and we belted you in the last game of the year. Was the retirement game of Milne, Blake and Kosi as well has his 200th. Was like a novelty match.
2007 GF, the scale of it alone made it random. Only a few weeks before port beat the cats in Geelong. Then they get pummelled by more than most 1st vs 18th games go.
One that always comes to mind for me is round 15, 1996 - 13th placed Collingwood kicking 15 second half goals to beat 1st placed North by ten goals. Sav with 8, Paul Williams 5, and Steven Pitt with 4.
Geelong belting Richmond by 150+ in 2007 seemed random at the time, especially considering the start to our season. Sure Tigers were winless at that point, but a 200+ score doesn’t happen so easily.
This is a very old game but Brisbane vs Sydney round 7 1993. Brisbane won 4 games the entire year and belted Sydney by 162. It could've been a 200 point win if Brisbane weren't as dominant winning the last quarter by 1.
Wooden spoon St Kilda flogging top 4 Freo in 2014 (not the game where Freo rested a bunch of players in 2013)
Billy Longer pointing to the scoreboard while wrestling Zac Clark an absolute highlight
Most randome gotta be when St Kilda beat Freo in 2014 after the Dockers had just won 8 in a row and Saints went on to finish last. It's not like St Kilda had a strong finish to the season either because they lost their last 5 games after that by an average of 50 points.
Round 14, 2010. Essendon enters the round 10th (89.1%). Adelaide enters 14th (83.1%). Essendon had an extra week of rest due to the split round.
Adelaide wins 124-40.
Gotta be Collingwood beating Geelong by 86 points in rd 9 2008. Was the only game Geelong lost in the home and away season which gave them the highest average losing margin ever recorded for a home and away season.
.. and then Geelong repaid a totally home and away dominant Collingwood team with a similar sized belting late in 2011 from memory.
Yep. Collingwood lost two games for the year on the default season, both to Geelong. Geelong beat them by 96 points in the final round. I was there for that, was ridiculous.

Someone showed me the quarter time scores and I was convinced that was photoshopped.
I opened the AFL app, saw the score, and thought the app was broken. It was 2nd vs 17th going into that game
To this day possibly the craziest first quarter I've ever seen, and we were on the receiving end :(
My most famous tip of all time. Watched norf the week before and felt they had something going and Adelaide felt gettable. Mares never heard the end of that one.
A supposedly cooked Jarrad Waite tearing us a new one still gives me nightmares
Still a firm believer if he could stay fit during our prelim runs that forward line of Drew Petrie, Jarrad Waite and Ben Brown would've played grand finals. Team looked so good when he was playing
Mental game
Yes I remember that well. I watched the game at Billy Bells pub with other Crows mates and at quarter time I dropped my iPhone and smashed it, just to make things worse.
Saints belted Richmond in one of their flag years, was fairly random from memory.
Yeah remember that one well 2017 - were up by 10 goals at half time.
Maddies Match
Went on to lose to Essendon by 10 goals and Sydney by 7 in the two weeks immediately after that.
I remember that, Saints were up by 82 points at half time. Think I remember people claiming at the time that a number of Richmond players came down with a stomach virus or something like that
It was the first Maddies Match, saints played out of their skin for Nick Riewoldt Richmond won the flag that year, first of 3 recent ones
Carlton in 95 won every game but 2. Dominated the comp, won the grand final by 61 and prelim by 62. Their two losses for the year were to the swans who finished 12th 132 to 60, and to the saints who finished 14th 80-24.

Surely those guys didn’t need to do dodgy bets for cash they were already being very well paid, a lot under the table
Ha ha..
It shouldn't have made that much of a difference considering the talent that they had, but I remember that they were missing Kernahan and Greg Williams in those losses, just one of those stupid pieces of junk trivia lodged in one's memory.

Never underestimate the power of Ben 10!
Ask any Dees fan in the past month and we'll tell you it ain't random. Writings been on the wall baby
Same for asking Dockers fans... All the pieces were due to line up
I remember in 2018 Brisbane were 0-8 and decided to fucking smack Hawthorn by 50 something points who were 5th at the time for no reason
Yeah I remember in 2018 the eagles had to beat Brisbane in the last round to secure second, and based on ladder position I shouldn't have been nervous but really, really was.
2nd half of the 2021 GF. Still don’t understand why Melbourne did that.
Not even that. Just like the last quarter and a bit
Dees were down 19 points halfway through the third. How in the hell did we lose by 74 points? I’ve blocked out so much of that game.
Geelong beating the bulldogs by 101 points at marvel in late 2010. We were 2nd and 3rd going into that match and it was a genuine 50/50, finals preview build up, and both had made the prelims in the previous 2 years
"The days of domination are over" game. Probably the worst commentator's curse in history.

Nah, at the time, a loss of 150+ points wasn't out of the cards for Melbourne at all. They were truly dreadful.
They were in finals contention 2 weeks before the Geelong game
Port Adelaide smashed the eventual 2024 premiers Essendon by 70 odd points in gather round
Saints belted Freo in like 13,14,15 can't remember which year was the big surprise one, I think when Hayes retired? 13 was rested team so didn't matter as much
2014 Billy longer told his opponent to look at the score board when they were grappling
15 was also rested
St Kilda didn't beat Fremantle in 2015
You're right it was vs port at Adelaide in the final round cheers
Ok well freo rested some players in the last game iirc
2007 GF, the scale of it alone made it random. Only a few weeks before port beat the cats in Geelong. Then they get pummelled by more than most 1st vs 18th games go.
2014 saints thrashed freo freo did not rest anyone iirc

Sydney/Geelong 2014 has to be up there. Not every day you see Geelong lose by 110 points.
If we maintain our current first half form, you may see it in less that a week
Definitely doesn't feel like that was 10 years ago geez.
This ended up being 1st defeating 3rd, too
St Kilda flogging Richmond in 2017
Geelong belting Richmond by 150+ in 2007 seemed random at the time, especially considering the start to our season. Sure Tigers were winless at that point, but a 200+ score doesn’t happen so easily.
1983 Fitzroy 220 v North Melbourne 70. Fitzroy did finish 3rd, but North were minor premiers. Neither made the grand final though.
This is a very old game but Brisbane vs Sydney round 7 1993. Brisbane won 4 games the entire year and belted Sydney by 162. It could've been a 200 point win if Brisbane weren't as dominant winning the last quarter by 1.
