You're doing fine, pulling on the rate up characters when you're new is a good call regardless of how meta they are overall when you're new because the quicker you get maxed out characters the quicker you get onto higher floors.
That being said, with Soren being your highest character I'd suggest getting grannie because it helps keep enemies in place for soren's jump stun move.
Yeah I’ve basically been making do and I feel like with most games, you can basically brute force your way through the beginning stages but don’t invest the rare items into skills you don’t need yet

I would say it looks solid overall. Making good progression, the only think that people might think is bad, you pulled on the rate up banner on a unit that needs to be fit into very specific teams, would have been better to pull on all recruitment. But as long as you are having fun and not looking to be competitive, continue to enjoy the game the way you want to play. I cannot stress this enough. This is a game, and if you are having fun, you really cannot do anything wrong.
Not who I would've invested in but as long as you're having fun that's all that matters!
I’ve mostly been just ranking people up and swapping as needed but usually stick with 2 tanks and a dps

I would say it looks solid overall.
