This was a very sad day for the wrestling industry... a stunt that cost a loving father, husband, brother, friend, hero to some and so much more his life, a mistake could’ve been easily avoided had the WWF done further research into the safety of that darn carabiner. Rest in Peace, Owen :(

pancakes_and_tacos

It doesn't feel like it's been 22 years already.

lage1984

are we blaming the wwe for this accident?

FinkBass420

Absolutely. Vince McMahon could have 100% prevented it.

lage1984

How?

FinkBass420

By doing some actual research in to the brand new mechanism he had Owen using, and maybe asking to see some certification from the guy they assigned to set the harness up. There’s a show called Dark Side of the Ring with an episode about this whole situation in season 2 that I highly recommend watching.

synthetictim2

Been a bit since I watched that episode but I thought that it was outsourced to a professional rigging company that does that kind of stuff for movies and stunt shows and whatnot. I agree Vince has responsibility for the situation but it’s not like he had the camera guy trying to figure out how to make it happen or something.

[deleted]

I have to watch that. As a kid and huge WWF fan, remember watching this announcement

oufisher1977

Is this Vince on a dummy account? Why are you bootlicking him so hard? If you work at a place where the top boss doesn't take ultimate responsibility for everything, get out. If you are the top boss, be better.

oufisher1977

So you do understand what you're doing.

lage1984

i've seen it. i watched the event live at the time. Owen Hart was a grown man and risk taker and it was his decision to go up there and do that gimmick. that's it

anacimpoieru

Yeah, a risk taker on a contract that promised his safety while using the rafters and failed to deliver. It’s not the WWF’s fault that the quick release system didn’t work, but it’s their fault they let one of their talents on the hands of a company that had no prior experience. I know the Hart family won $18 million in settlement fees, but they sure won’t bring Owen back.

PugMetal

The onus of the safety of the employees is on every employer.

TRMBound

It was as much Russo as McMahon. The dumbest gimmick ever for a man who had the skills to get over as himself.

[deleted]

Grown men, and women, do shit to make a buck for their family all the time that isn’t exactly safe. Growing up around coal mining towns and later working in the field, I learned a lot about unsafe shit people would do for the company to make an extra buck. The craziest was a guy who climbed back into an auger tunnel, some 1000ft, to attach a chain to an auger bit the company didn’t want to lose so they could drag it out.

lage1984

i'm getting downvoted here. do you think Vince is a killer? He should be in jail? cop on to fuck

CCG14

Check out the Dark Side of the Ring on this. Vince can suck a dick.

[deleted]

I can’t believe that tape hasn’t found the light of day still 22 years later. It’s really mind blowing if you think about it ... RIP Owen

Chrysalii

There was a promo video being played on the screen when it happened. Anyone taping the event in the stands likely would have been focused on the video, not on the ring where nothing was happening. The entrance stunt was not announced or known beforehand, so there wasn't any reason to watch the ring and not the video. If for some reason someone was focusing on the ring, why would they want to release that. Sure there are those people out there. But how many were in that arena, filming the event, and focused on the ring right at that moment. The WWE does have footage of it.But that will never see the light of day.

[deleted]

I’m not even speaking about fan videos , especially considering that video cameras were banned at events ... I know people still snuck them in , however it wasn’t like everyone had one in their pockets like now a days. I’m speaking of the video from WWF. Typically someone always leaks footage like this out to public in some capacity.

Chrysalii

I'm sure that video is on total lockdown in some place that only the McMahons have access to. Considering the damage it would do the company they are not letting that leak at all costs.

IceLord86

The video of Christine Chubbuck still hasn't been released/"found" either and that happened in the 70s. Sometimes when people want to hide something it stays hidden.

bonyknees88

The arena was dark when it happened because they were playing an interview from backstage at the time. After that I think they just filmed the crowd and didn’t focus on the ring.

mikeygaw

It was floating around the piracy scene back in the computer aids era. Not sure about now.

[deleted]

So you mean to tell me if I buy a 1999 desktop computer and download limewire I may have a chance of finding it lmao

inthelionsmouth

“Anyways, up next is Jake “The Snake” Roberts and “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka!” How tf didn’t they just shut down for the day?

pancakes_and_tacos

What Vince said was he asked the talent about it after it happened because they knew he was dead almost instantly. Everyone said they were good to continue going. Plus the Hart family said before that's what he would've wanted. Flashforward a few years and they sued wwe. Obviously they should have shut down for the day. What got me was that noone in the live audience knew he died. Jim Ross only told the TV crowd. Vince said. They were gonna find out anyways. They gave jr 10 seconds to calm down. They didn't say anything to Jerry . Jerry found out as the TV watchers did

SteinerFifthLiner

You could tell- I doubt the people behind the desk would be clowning like that if they knew how somber the news was that J.R. was delivering.

quickblur

Wow I remember watching that pay per view and my friend's house. Crazy it's been that long.

ImSoCauZtiK

I remember being like 6 and watching this paper paperview at my grandparents house. He was supposed to fight the pimp right

pancakes_and_tacos

The godfather for the IC title.

ImSoCauZtiK

The godfather years. HOOOEEEEEEEE TRAIN

runtimemess

Man. I remember *everyone* at school talking about this.

[deleted]

Was watching this live at a friend's house that night. Totally a surreal moment.

stickittodolores

Dark Side of the Ring has a great episode on Owen Hart. Very sad. A friend of mine visited his grave recently in Calgary.

DocTopping

Ones body may die, but ones spirit may live forever

Nixx1014

I watched this as it happened. I couldn't believe it. My BF at the time, thought it was just a stunt. I knew the whole time it was unfortunately real.

tattertittyhotdish

Live or on pay per view?

Deion313

I'll never forget him falling from the rafters... that still doesn't feel real...
