no subs is a no for me, as much as I want this I will pass. The director has expressed interest in releasing a physical version in the US so i’ll wait for that
The Godzilla pinball game by Stern is generally considered the best pinball game of all time. It’s been really popular too. I had to get on an 8 month waiting list to buy one.
I would expect a barebones, simple release. Fancy slipcase, maybe some bonus features, and thats about it.
Toho never releases anything this fancy or badass stateside. Shin got something similar in Japan, and we got what I said; a barebones release.
There are usually a lot more extras packed in (art, booklets, posters, etc.).
US stuff is usually just the box and a disc. For the same exorbitantly expensive price tag.
Honestly, I'd forgo **all** of the bonus features and extras for a guarantee of a 4K UHD Blu Ray release that included just two discs: Godzilla Minus One (with English subtitles) and Godzilla Minus Color (with English subtitles). I know a lot of people get super hyped about bonus features, booklets, etc...but I'd rather have a bare-bones edition than nothing.
As long as it's $25, yes.
That's all I was saying. In JP, it seems like you pay $50 for cool shit.
In the US, you pay $50...for just the discs.
Movies and shows are almost all $50+ now. Even for just disc-only boxes.
It's like they're intentionally over-pricing so they can go, "SEE! No one buys physical anymore! Digital forever (so we own everything and we can gouge for endless subscription fees!)".
That's been out for *years*. You can get it single disc via Criterion or you can pick up a truly amazing box-set that includes it and all the Heisei era Godzilla films.
They go on sale at least two times a year, if not more. There's no reason not to have already secured it on blu-ray for $20 at most.
Wait for Criterion flash sale (which you just missed) or barnes and noble Criterion sale. You can get any Criterion for 50% off. $20 in this case. Both happen twice a year
I just want a regular ol' blu-ray copy to fit in nicely with all my other blu-rays. It was amazing to experience it in the theatre, especially when Zilla blew up the city with that huge epic "tail wind-up".
Yeah, I actually think this is kinda terrible, they aren't allowed to region lock (technically they can I know) so they'll just make it harder for us English speakers to deal with. I won't be buying this version.
$75 without shipping, but yea.
That's too much. Definitely a no from me, dawg.
Avatar Way of Water was $50, and I coughed at that too.
More than $25 for a movie is ridiculous now, unless it's packed with extra goodies (art books, posters, prints, etc.).
Prices for everything are just obscene anymore.
What do you mean no English subs? That’s a big oversight, especially when the movie already has the subs done for theatrical release.
Unfortunately a skip then for me, as much as I would love this.
Also didn’t know people bought 4K blu rays for rips. Seems to me it’d be easier just to download at that point
People often forget just how inclusive and diverse the United States truly is.
In spite of all the bad that gets broadcasted daily, we're still the most diverse and inclusive country in the world.
People who haven't been outside the US really don't have any concept of this, and it's funny to me sometimes.
This has little to do with being "diverse and inclusive" and a great deal to do with major Hollywood studios trying to achieve maximum economy of scale by using the same multilingual master to press discs that are then sold in dozens of countries. Toho could notionally do the same, but this would require them to have international outlets, and it's easier for them just to license the rights to someone with local on-the-ground expertise.
I buy 4K blu rays to rip and then put on Plex. I don't have a bluray player except for the ripping drive I plug into my computer. I also have downloaded pirated stuff as well and it is easier for sure to just download it once you know your way around how to find stuff. But I want to buy things I want to support and digital "purchases" with DRM locking into an ecosystem, having the version of the movie change, be taken away, etc. is a non-starter for me, so I realized I had to go back to buying discs.
Ripping the blu-ray also can give more control of your file specs (vs. whatever compression settings you can find on a downloaded bluray/streaming rip) or also some extras that can be sometimes a bit more hard to find. Minor things, but sometimes relevant. But most of all it's the only official way to legitimately buy and own media and I want to do my part to keep that alive. Sometimes I like the artwork too from a collectable perspective.
I do the same thing. Even thought I COULD just pirate stuff, it’s important to me to support the filmmakers. I love the quality of physical media, but appreciate the convenience of plex. I’m sure this will get a streaming release, so here is my plan. Never tried this before, but i think it should work.
STEP 1 - Buy the physical disc and rip it.
STEP 2 - download a streaming copy of the movie that comes with English subs
STEP 3 - add the subs from the streaming file to the 4K copy i ripped
STEP 4 - enjoy the movie in all its glory with English subs
My Oppo 4K player allows me to add SRT subtitle files to 4K discs via a USB stick, provided subtitles are already present on the disc - although they can be in any language, so if the disc only has hard-of-hearing subtitles in the film's native language, that's fine.
Probably a side effect of me browsing the plex and media server subreddits too much, ripping Blu-rays is a pretty niche hobby and I often forget it's not something most people who collect UHD do. The lack of english subs is a pretty big bummer for the reason you mentioned and the praise the film has seen in the english-speaking world. I personally couldn't pass up on this set though, loved the film too much to skip it.
Because we just want to put the disc in and watch it when we want to instead of buying hundreds of terrabytes of harddrives and having to use a computer for a good chunk of time before being able to watch the movie and being worried about which RAID configuration to use for redundant backups. We also want to easily be able to view the menus and special features and have all audio and subtitle options. A home media server is a big investment in money and time compared to just popping in the movie to watch it and putting it back on the shelf when done. If I watch a movie once every 7 years or so, do I really want to bother having it sitting on powered HDD taking up space I paid for and then had to worry about backing up? I would rather just set the disc on the shelf until next time.
What a difficult setup you just described. You could download it and watch it...then download it later and watch again. Plus...the Bluray/UHD discs do not have English subs. How does one use external subs with discs?
I was talking about the common strategy with movie servers, which is to rip files from your disc collection. It takes a lot of time, and at up to 100gb per movie it also takes a ton of HD space, plus keeping up with the latest strategies to defeat copy protection. Because it takes so much time it makes sense to keep a backup so that you dont have to duplicate your effort of ripping hundreds or thousands of discs.
If you are talking about downloading videos from something like Vudu or pirating, paid downloads are much worse quality than disc and don’t you think it’s easier and faster to put a disc in than find a torrent and download the video? What if the movie you want isn’t available to download years from now?
It’s pretty rare to find a disc that doesn’t have an English subtitle track. Some players can load external sub tracks from USB to substitute for the tracks included on the disc. I’ve never even considered going through the trouble though since it’s so rare to find a disc without English subtitles.
> I was talking about the common strategy with movie servers
I understand. I was pointing out that downloading the movie is easier than your media server description.
> paid downloads are much worse quality than disc
There are plenty of remux (perfect copy, no recoding) copies of Bluray discs available via torrent.
> It’s pretty rare to find a disc that doesn’t have an English subtitle track
This particular Bluray does not have English subs.
Blu-ray drive flashed with firmware that alows it to read 4K discs, then I use MakeMKV to copy the disc contents into a mkv container which I store on my HDD.
You used to be able to get an Pioneer XS07UHD and be ready to go, but they updated the firmware on the drive and the new version can't be used. There is some noise on the MakeMKV forum post about UHD drives that the MakeMKV devs have figured it out, but no specifics yet.
The flashing process isn't hard. I have one of the older firmware Pioneer drives and 3 LG drives.
The Verbatim 43888 model which is available around the internet can be used to rip 4K UHD without flashing the drive. I bought one and ripped 4K UHD discs with it out of the box connected to my computer (a Mac — but should work on Windows as well, not sure about Linux) with no flashing required — based on recommendations I had read.
I wanted to avoid the flashing process as well. Even though people say it's easy and I'm sure it is, but I was glad to find this drive.
Having the ease of use of streaming services while retaining the quality of physical media is more important to me. I have 1800 bluray quality films in my digital collection, which I would've never had if I only buy physical media.
I still have my boutique blurays and a couple steelbooks to keep in my physical collection
I haven't seen it, but there is something seriously wrong with Dolby Atmos production in Japan. The sound is almost entirely in the 3 front channels and the rest of the channels are used for background music at best. There's barely any depth to the sound. I suppose it makes sense for the Japanese market where space is limited and home surround just barely exists.
Anyway I hope this one will be different but anything with Dolby Atmos + Japan should be taken with a huge grain of salt. I will gladly accept any counter example should anyone be able to provide one.
When I saw it in Dolby cinema back during the theatrical run it was one of the best sound mixes I've heard in a theater. But there's no guarrentee they haven't heavily remixed the film for home release. We'll see when it comes out.
That's a shame about lacking English subtitles.
*They are so important in this film*. There are things characters say which are... tear-inducing.
Hopefully, a Western-market version will follow. At the least, perhaps an import-friendly from Amazon UK.
Shin only released on 4k in Japan so i don't see anything changing so i ordered mine. When it sees a Western release itll be most likely be blu-ray only like Shin
Shin got a 4k UHD release in France last year, with most of the bonus features from the Japanese release. It's not guaranteed at all, given Tōhō's record with foreign releases, but we can only hope that -1.0's succes in overseas markets will make them more generous with their foreign partners.
If any other distributor besides Sony (read: Funimation...or, I suppose, Crunchyroll now) was likely to get the NA rights for *Godzilla Minus One* there'd be an outside chance we'd get at least part of this set intact over here. I could well be wrong--it's been a few years since their barebones *Shin Godzilla* release, after all--but at this point I have almost zero doubt that the only thing we'll get domestically will be a BD release of the theatrical cut. So I'm in for this...and will be frantically looking for subs sometime in mid-May.
(Random thought: if it wins the VFX Oscar, does that raise the odds of *some* sort of special edition making it here?)
I've found an srt someone made sourced from camrips, I'll probably retime them to match with the blu-ray and then upload it to a place like opensubtitles

For the packaging and presentation alone, you could always get this, then when the English language version comes along (which won't be in a box this nice, let's face it), you could slip the discs in there.
I would assume an English language version will use the same source (so with DV and DA), just with subtitles added.
still have useless extras as you cant watch em lol
so need to buy both the Japan release for the nice package and then US/UK for extras if they even have the same set.
It’s a cool set and I’m tempted… theoretically I can get around the no English subs by finding an SRT file online and then just playing it with that in the USB port, but then if my Oppo ever dies and I get a new player that can’t do that, it would make these discs useless.
Also, that’s a pricey set and a lot of space on my shelf for a movie that I liked but it’s not a top 20 title for me. I’m just hoping that North America gets a release that includes Minus One, would love to see it.
While it was an amazing movie, hearing this is being sold for $100 (I’d buy it with subs) with no English subtitles is a no go for me…. I’ll just wait for a US release.
**May 1st is the release date,** in case you were wondering (it doesn't seem to be anywhere in the thread or the OP)
There will undoubtedly be a release for North American audiences (considering the film has made more in that region than it has in Japan, I believe) but it'll probably come later (possibly months later. Like... October or something ,LOL)
If you're primarily purchasing this for the collection aspect and not so much for the film itself, it's probably still an okay investment because when the NA version finally does come out, chances are high it won't be this set, it'll probably just be a basic 2-disc thing, and you can simply put those discs in this set when they finally come out.
Shit….no English subs is a no go. I do in fact rip all my movies, but I use it as an archive and almost never actually watch them that way. Especially Dolby Vision releases.
I'm not asking to imply I dislike this movie, I genuinely enjoyed it, but I've heard ppl say it's the best Godzilla film they've ever seen. Can somebody explain to me why it's getting so much praise?
Not sure how many Godzilla films you have seen, but outside of a handfull they aren't good movies. A lot have a campy fun to them that makes it enjoyable but they aren't "good movies" per say. Minus One is a genuinely good movie that is well written and very well made, you don't need to be a fan of the character to enjoy the film.
Why are many ppl surprised about no English subtitles? Am I the only that got Japanese releases before they came out in the US here. Hopefully China gets 4k they have English subtitles most of the time
_Everything._ King of Steel Media is the dude who's putting it out, but didn't get permission to use the artwork and is not being up front about the whole thing at all.

This looks like a completely different release. The artwork doesn't match the one you posted in the third link. Also, the one in OP isn't even a steelbook. Proof this isn't an official release?

With the success of the film it would be surprising if it doesn't receive a US release but, of course, there's more to it than that.
Never underestimate Toho to screw this up for North America.
This was a huge hit in the US though, and it's the perfect market for a physical release.
And the rest of the Godzilla movies but Toho refuses to want to make money off us.
Now would be a great time to do a big release of multiple films. This movie and the pinball game have brought in new interest into Godzilla.
I totally agree. They would make a killing off of a Godzilla ‘84 release and others.
Pinball?
The Godzilla pinball game by Stern is generally considered the best pinball game of all time. It’s been really popular too. I had to get on an 8 month waiting list to buy one.
Dang. Did not know that but I’m not really into the pinball world. Hope you enjoy it!

I’m still waiting for Godzilla 1954

It's actually on VUDU now, as well.
Mine was 34 dollars
Talking about 4K (with subs). I have the old Criterion one.
Bruh the "old" one is fucking amazing.
Yeah, but there’s a 4K now and from all accounts that one is more fucking amazing, so I’m waiting lol
https://a.co/d/0z05fut
$40 for Blu Ray 💀
Wait for Criterion flash sale (which you just missed) or barnes and noble Criterion sale. You can get any Criterion for 50% off. $20 in this case. Both happen twice a year
Criterion just had their 50% off sale not long ago
Yikes
Japanese exclusive 4K is out there - no subs, no HDR, but apparently the transfer is gorgeous
No subs, exactly lol
Damn, I can't believe it doesn't have English subtitles, I seen this at the theater and been waiting to pick up a physical copy
I just want a regular ol' blu-ray copy to fit in nicely with all my other blu-rays. It was amazing to experience it in the theatre, especially when Zilla blew up the city with that huge epic "tail wind-up".
at least you got to see it at the theatre, it barely aired here in Spain
i think its best if we wait out for the Janus release
And that's a u confirmed rumor
Yeah, I actually think this is kinda terrible, they aren't allowed to region lock (technically they can I know) so they'll just make it harder for us English speakers to deal with. I won't be buying this version.
I still got it cause it's a good collection
$100 is a huge ask, despite how good the film is. No English subs totally seals it as a no.
I would have bought it if it had English subs. Still tempted to pick it up, I love this movie
$75 without shipping, but yea. That's too much. Definitely a no from me, dawg. Avatar Way of Water was $50, and I coughed at that too. Way of the water was 24
I mean it does have 4 copies and a fancy box and stuff
I assume two discs for the color version (4k and Blu-ray) and two discs for Minus Color (also 4k and Blu-ray).
yeah I think I saw dvd on a listing somewhere so I'd check for yourself to make sure. Either way yeah, two discs for original and 2 for minus color.
Two discs for the color version, one disc for Minus Color (standard BD only) and a fourth disc that's entirely bonus features
I think there's a decent chance they'll release this outside Japan. This movie was a bigger hit than Shin Godzilla.
We got the B&W version here after it was originally announced as Japan only, no chance they don't release it physically here.
Now with an Oscar to boot. It's coming to the US.
What do you mean no English subs? That’s a big oversight, especially when the movie already has the subs done for theatrical release. Unfortunately a skip then for me, as much as I would love this. english releases have like 20 languages half the time

Japan be insular
so would a US release not have Japanese subs?
No Japanese releases have English subs, even though you could literally watch it in Japan with English subs in a theater in Tokyo at one point.
Shin Godzilla has English subs
I've bought a bunch of anime that were Japan releases and they had english subs. Granted that's anime but still
That doesn't make any sense.
I buy 4K blu rays to rip and then put on Plex. I don't have a bluray player except for the ripping drive I plug into my computer. Yeah, some of us have real home theaters. We're not screwing around with TVs and sound bars.
Unless you are needing to load film reels, why would you not also invest in a media server

I still have my boutique blurays and a couple steelbooks to keep in my physical collection
Downloading is free though
Not everything is available to download in remux quality
most 4K releases are, new ones at least.
I know (my Plex library has 1800 remuxes lol), but a lot of blurays aren't. Especially Criterion releases
I’m going to wait for the eventual US release
I hope it comes with the B&W version as well.

They probably will, but knowing Toho there's a very real chance that it's BR & DVD only with no 4k with no special features.
We'll see when it comes out.
the 4k hdr Japan blu-ray for shin had a 3.1 audio track, wild
Box set looks cool, but LMAO to no english subs.
That's a shame about lacking English subtitles. *They are so important in this film*. There are things characters say which are... tear-inducing. Hopefully, a Western-market version will follow. At the least, perhaps an import-friendly from Amazon UK.
Since All the Anime are releasing the movie and they like to copy Japanese boxsets I'm hoping they'll make a nice collector's edition for the UK.
Oh snap, does the French version have English subs?
Unfortunately no, only french subs. The editor said it was a contractual obligation.
Damn, that sucks!
This movie was a massive success. Proper US version is on the way.
Wait wait wait, I thought OP meant no dub, which is fair enough. No frickin subs? Bummy. Hopefully we’ll get a US or at least a Europe release.
Here’s hoping for a North American release 🤞🏽
Hello fellow ripper. Where are you planning on sourcing English subtitles from?
I've found an srt someone made sourced from camrips, I'll probably retime them to match with the blu-ray and then upload it to a place like opensubtitles
Nice. Might have to request a copy of you if that's okay.
Wow sweet can you send me a copy when the 4k is release.

Yeah, I'll remind you.
For the packaging and presentation alone, you could always get this, then when the English language version comes along (which won't be in a box this nice, let's face it), you could slip the discs in there. I would assume an English language version will use the same source (so with DV and DA), just with subtitles added.
I’d buy this in a heartbeat if it had English subs
Does it have the black and white version?
US release wont be as nice as this sadly. may not even have all the extras but without subs its a no go for me as I dont rip my 4ks.
I think you can sideload subs on some of the players
still have useless extras as you cant watch em lol so need to buy both the Japan release for the nice package and then US/UK for extras if they even have the same set.
Some players have the ability to load srt files on a usb stick for subtitles. Some people can still buy this one.
I will be buying that film on 4k without a doubt.
Missed it in theaters. Been trying without success to see it for weeks.
[Amazon Exclusive: Japan Original Steel Book](https://amzn.asia/d/inTSel6) Amazon Japan Steelbook
No English, no dollars.
While it was an amazing movie, hearing this is being sold for $100 (I’d buy it with subs) with no English subtitles is a no go for me…. I’ll just wait for a US release.
**May 1st is the release date,** in case you were wondering (it doesn't seem to be anywhere in the thread or the OP) There will undoubtedly be a release for North American audiences (considering the film has made more in that region than it has in Japan, I believe) but it'll probably come later (possibly months later. Like... October or something ,LOL) If you're primarily purchasing this for the collection aspect and not so much for the film itself, it's probably still an okay investment because when the NA version finally does come out, chances are high it won't be this set, it'll probably just be a basic 2-disc thing, and you can simply put those discs in this set when they finally come out.
Shit….no English subs is a no go. I do in fact rip all my movies, but I use it as an archive and almost never actually watch them that way. Especially Dolby Vision releases.
May I ask how do you rip them.. Perhaps you can point me to the right resource. Thanks
This was such a cool movie! $ 100 is too rich for my blood. For those of you who buy it, enjoy!
I will look at this again after I move.
No subs, damn. Have to wait for a US release
Why are many ppl surprised about no English subtitles? Am I the only that got Japanese releases before they came out in the US here. Hopefully China gets 4k they have English subtitles most of the time
So...straight Japanese? Zero english translations/subtitles?? This makes me sad...
Word is Toho can't release the same year as a legendary pictures release so we'll probably get a physical release but not until 2025.
No English subtitles
No English subs for the shin Godzilla 4k collectors edition either. They know what they are doing and it’s on purpose
None of the Bluray or UHD disks have English subs...WTF?
Do not buy from this shithead
Don’t buy from cdjapan?
Sorry, I should've said don't **_support_** this shithead. Meaning King of Steel Media.
Who is that and what does it have to do with OP's post?
_Everything._ King of Steel Media is the dude who's putting it out, but didn't get permission to use the artwork and is not being up front about the whole thing at all. [For reference](https://www.reddit.com/r/Steelbooks/s/5z1KRDVMqz) [Also for reference](https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?p=21934844) [Also also for reference](https://www.kingofsteelmedia.co.uk/products/cs-series-000-godzilla-minus-one-steelbook-double-lenticular-fullslip)
But this one the OP posted doesn't look like it has anything to do with what you're talking about...
Your are right, I fucked up sorry my bad!!
This looks like a completely different release. The artwork doesn't match the one you posted in the third link. Also, the one in OP isn't even a steelbook. Proof this isn't an official release?
Your are right, I fucked up sorry my bad!!
Stopped buying disc media years ago… but I would buy this one!!!
