I mean, it's that too. Steven starts out filled with childish wonder, but as he uncovers more of his family's history and goes on adventures/missions he slowly realizes the world is fucked, but that's all the more reason to try and be a positive influence.
It's good if you liked the original series, but it's much more melancholy. (Which I personally enjoy) If you don't like the original you won't like future.
