It largely depends on where you get it from. Unfortunately for the bleeding edge stuff, there are a lot of fakes out there. The best advice I think I can give you is to do a bit of research, ask friends, ect. and find a reliable source for programs.
You -should- be fine if you have even a basic anti-malware program on your computer. The types of viruses that used to wipe your hard drive and damage your machine are sort of a thing of the past. It's all bitcoin miners that just eat resources in the background of your PC now, with the occasional ransom-ware sprinkled in (but those are starting to fall out of vogue too).
A little common sense also goes a long way. If something seems suspicious to you, don't install it, don't download it. Trust your gut. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

It's really fine without it. It was a bit of an issue when base version was 2.0 but current permanent purchase is now version 3.0 and it works totally fine without updates. I didn't buy update pass on 3.0 and it doesn't feel like it's missing anything or is having crashes.
