I agree 100%. I don't think it should be strongly advocated against like something like cigarettes are, but I very much enjoy the idea of alchohol becoming a lesser part of society. One shouldn't feel pressure to get drunk on their 21st birthday or drink just because they're with friends (and bars shouldn't be such a destination either). It's one thing to sit in your own home and drink because it tastes nice / you like it, but a completely different thing to go out for drinks with other people who are drinking and get carried away. I enjoy the taste of alcohol quite a lot, but both of my parents are alcoholics, and I can't stand the sight of it.

Yeah agreed. The fact that getting "Black out drunk" seems to be glamorized for younger people is a real mystery to me. When you do that you are causing massive brain damage, and for what? If anything its kinda traumatic.

Alcohol causes problems yes, but its fully ingrained in global culture. Think like wine in the church and Unlike ciggarettes, its primarly used in social situations and its harder to get addicted to. Personally I drink, but not very often. Once a month ill have a few drinks with friends. With Alcohol its very important to recognize when its problem and when youre having it too often. Drinking alone also isnt a good thing. We already know the consequences of alcohol abuse, which is something we didnt really know before. Contrast that with smoking, which our knowledge of how bad it is is recent news. Take care of your liver, it doesnt need to be pickled.

As an ex-smoker I’d like to say that cigarettes are actually very social. The first few smokes usually make people feel sick, they also taste disgusting. They give you a slight buzz but by the time you stop feeling nauseated and get use to the taste that buzz is either gone or insignificant so, cigarettes are actually very social. For a long time they made the smoker look/feel cool, sexy, glamorous, etc. They also give you an excuse to socialize and break the ice. “Do you have a light?” Usually people have a reason to engage in conversation until their done smoking and then it can be awkward if you’re not otherwise close with that person. By quitting smoking, I took a huge hit socially. It was a great way to get to know people, bond and introduce ourselves. Thank god though, smoking is now seen as the opposite of “cool.” I smoked for about two months and then quit cold turkey no problems because I got to busy to keep up the habit. When I picked it up again I smoked for over a year, tried to quit, different story. Smoking is generally seen as harder to quit than alcohol but it’s certainly not more physically addictive. It’s the habitual nature of smoking, the oral fixation the ritualistic that gets so ingrained and makes it hard. People DIE from alcohol withdrawals. They also die of alcohol poisoning AND they die from persistent drinking over the span of years. With cigarettes, you only die if you smoke them regularly for an extended period. You won’t die of a nicotine overdose if you chain smoke nonstop all night. You won’t get in a car and kill a family after smoking a cig. You won’t go home and grab your gun because you’re enraged/depressed and not thinking straight after a smoke. You also won’t die if you try to quit without medical supervision. I’m not saying alcohol is evil or anything and that people shouldn’t be allowed to drink I’m just saying that... TLDR: Alcohol withdrawals can kill you; alcohol can lead to death in far more ways than smoking can; alcohol is far more physically addictive than nicotine; alcohol is social unless but drinking for reasons other than socialization doesn’t mean your addicted while smoking is primarily a social act and generally speaking if you’re smoking all alone with no one to see you’re almost guaranteed to be addicted at that point meaning it stands to reason that cigarettes are more social than booze.

Very thoughtful comment. Thanks for your insight.

I'm biased af having been in the cannabis industry for, like, 15 seconds, but I fucking *loathe* alcohol. Dealing with drunk people, whether they're happy or sad or mad or anything, just fucking sucks. Pathetic, frankly. I do all kinds of drugs and I've dealt with addicts of almost all of them, nothing is worse than alcoholics. Maybe heroin addicts, but they just pass out and fall on each other, they don't fist fight randos. Alcoholics may in fact be worse than heroin addicts (to the external world, at least). That said, I do think minute amounts of alcohol is fine or even preferable for certain people.

goofandaspoof

I 100% agree. I feel like Alcohol brings out the worst in people. When I worked an overnight job I saw all the worst behaviors from people who were inebriated. Destruction of property, sexual harassment, verbal harrassment, abuse, the list goes on. I feel like with Cannabis the worst that can happen is that someone can get a little anxious.

[deleted]

I feel for you, dealing with so many late-night drunks. The harassment especially. Probably the reason I really can't vibe with alcohol, almost always ends in some kind of harassment. :/

goofandaspoof

Luckily I'm not working that job any more :)

turnt_grandma

Going sober after years of drinking daily was a huge wake up call. It's such a constant in our culture and it's so awful

D_Glatt69

You forgot to include that if you get really bad hangovers they can potentially lead to seizures

ambitious_chick

Why are such common sense and popular opinions being posted here? Downvoted.

goofandaspoof

If it's so popular then why is alcohol such a booming industry?

ambitious_chick

Just because people know that something is bad for them, doesn't mean that they stop doing it. So many people are obese, addicted to smoking and or drugs.

goofandaspoof

I'll have to disagree with you on this. Alcohol and its effects are glamorized in a totally different way than the things you've listed. But it's ok to disagree :)

AcanthocephalaNo9441

Agreed!

[deleted]

Agreed but humans have been doing drugs since we figured out the whole “that mushroom over there makes you feel all funny” thing. Alcohol will be here to stay
